Thread: First Tail

I'm probably doing this wrong but hey! I got one half of the hip fins sculpted and sprayed down so it should be ready for molding. Made a whisker and it will hopefully be all molded and ready to go soon. Need to get some keys on there and spray it with some mold release. Name: IMG_20180211_142247.jpg

Thank you guys! I ended up scrapping the mold for the whiskers and I'll be starting over. It's just really messy and pretty much unusable. Also I fogot to mold in a hole for the pour spout. So we're just going to start over.

But! I got my first successful test pull of my mini scale mold! The first one didn't set up but I'm very pleased with how this run came out. I'll probably try to level out the back of the mold so it stops rocking and more evenly distributes the silicone later. The scales are not nearly as clean as I would like but neither is the mold. I'll probably mold up the small scale sheet again and try for a cleaner one later this week. For now this will do for paint tests.

Now I'm just waiting on a spray gun and mini silicone tests of my mica pigments to make sure none of them with prevent the silicone from curing. Full scale sheet is over half way done.Name: IMG_20180417_225306.jpg

I'm still not sure...right now I'm playing with a two part stone mold that I can pour silicone into but I'm wondering if the cosplay method for making leeku would work too. I've seen many Ahsoka cosplayers take a length of cotton and roll it in a latex skin which might be cheaper and theoretically is still water safe.

Lovely photos one of my friends took out at Ohiopyle over the weekend. I can't wait until the tail is done and the entire thing comes together. Name: IMG_20180423_135104_988.jpg

i was thinking making an air-dry sculpt, then pour plaster over that, leaving the thicker end a bit exposed? that way it can easily be pulled out as long as you coat it in vaseline

Yeah that should totally work, especially if you leave the end open as the pour spout.

Perfect! Let me know how it goes! Using a two part mold means I'll probably have seams so if that works better I'd love to know.

Yeah, when I was dishing out my silicone I completely ruined my container...so I had to throw it away. Make sure everything is covered as to not get anything on anything otherwise its a complete PAIN to clean up!

    But other than that...

    Your mold is looking great!!

Thank you! I should remind myself ronsnotch butcher paper...

Other than totally forgetting to put keys in it's much better than the first run. Apparently I forget how to mold when I try to do it at home.
