Talking Partial silicone tail with removable monofin

So I just ordered a new finis monofin from eBay and I obviously need to make a new tail for her lol
So for the removable monofin (a fairly unheard of thing lol) how I did this last time with my mahina was with neoprene and silicone and at the bottom of the fluke (think the opening of a fin fun)except 15lbs heavier and with velcrow so the ends stay shut .
Now for this tail I want to make kinda the same thing except with a "full" silicone fluke ,I'm thinking blues and blacks and maybe even some gold. But the biggest thing I still have to figure out is how I'm doing the body either individual scaling , piping on fishy scales or something like this

That tail with the picture you showed above I believe she told me she didn’t finish because it was a prototype and the particular method consumed too much silicone for the price she was trying to sell her tails so she later found and perfected her current scale method.

I'm not personally going to be selling this tail so I think I should be safe there but instead of making the rectangles and cutting them down to size I plan to make a really shallow mold about the thickness of a individual scale (or thinner) mold so I don't waste as much and it would be faster ...hopefully lol

If you use the method like I was doing keep in mind if you paint over these scales it seals down the edge and basically turns it into a scale sheet and you lose the effect of being able to flip up the scale ends (which was what I wanted so was quite disappointed when I realized this) this is also very time consuming which I'm not patient enough for, I really like my sculpt on the fly that i do now and with practice I've become pretty efficient. Also if you buy your 100% he silicone from walmart instead of home depot you will save some $. You can still use this method and get the desired affect if you simply tint your silicone ahead of time instead of painting the completed project, but then you run into it not being as easy to blend your colors. All in all I was not happy with this method

To thin the silicone you can use mineral spirits but always use a mask and ventilated area cause the gasses it emits are toxic

Personally for me I eyeball it but I work with a consistency of cake mix or pancake mix where it’s a bit thick but still easy to brush on stuff, my guess is you will find a consistency that you like working with depending on what your using it for, half and half...

I eyeball it until I get the viscosity that I need it to be.
