    Re=painting a MVD Tail

    Has anyone tried to re-paint an MVD tail? was it a success?

    What type of tail are you trying to repaint? Latex or Silicone? I haven't tried it my self but depending on the material will change the outcome and what others have to say about it.

    you cant, you have to mix paint with the silicone or latex he made it with, and then spray/paint that on.

    You should be able to. If, for instance, he used Dragonskin silicone, you would have to mix your paint with that. No other paint would work. You just have to match the products.

    He said one is fully cured cant get more paint to stick.
    Mike told me that it is impossible to repaint my mvd tail. I had several people interested in my when it was for sale but only I'd the y could repaint it..

    I'm confused why you wouldn't be able to repaint it? Unless he coats the tail with something afterwards, you should definitely be able to repaint it. All you would need was the latex or silicone that he used and pigment.

    I remember in his FB pics that he said he puts on at least 2 clear coats after the many many layers of paint (pic). However if it was clear silicone it would discolor over time, which he specifically avoids by not having translucent flukes, even in replicas where the original would have it. So that doesn't make sense that he would use just silicone as his clear coat. HOWEVER I've also seen him do "touch ups" (pic) on finished tails (the Ripley's tails) on a few occasions. (Pic of paints)

    Perhaps it's possible that paint will take but he doesn't want people re painting his work, which makes sense. If I were him I wouldn't be to thrilled about people wanting to do that either. He puts a lot of time and effort into that since it takes so many layers to do it right. I bet those white tails in particular take friggin forever to paint (the lighter the color, the more layers you need). Perhaps you'd also have to re do the clear layer over any touch up spots or else it would look matte there and shiny everywhere else? It wouldn't be a problem if he wasn't nearly impossible to get a hold of. :/ If you actually have one of his tails and wanted to know you'd have a better chance of him responding. I highly doubt he'd respond to a "what if" question.

    Besides that, if are intensely curious or have a need to repaint it, start digging round on the net. Or call the smooth on people to see if they have or know of a clear coat that would go on top of silicone but not discolor.

    If you have an actual tail that needs it and you're unsure, always swatch test first.

    I have a silicone tail by Mike and he repainted it for me once. I think he used createx. It was fine for a while but eventually it started coming off. Everytime I wore it, I left flakes of paint everywhere. I got tired of it, so I just spent the last few weeks trying to get it all off. It was not fun!
