For beginners getting used to swimming with a monofin, it might be better to start out with a kickboard to get used to dolphin kicking, both with head-high and head-in-the-water positions. Then, doing dolphin kicking on one's back, with the arms straight in the streamline position. All of this would be swimming on the surface, where there would be no need for breath-holding. It would take practice with these activities first before trying to swim underwater in a tail. Just my two cents! :-)
