Before you can become a tester for a tail company or be sponsored by them you'd need to show you have a large following of their target audience, and being known within the community will help as well.

This. At the very least, you'd need a mermaiding resume. Do you have any experience working at events? If not, this site has plenty of tips and guides on starting out as a professional.
