Thread: Do you need mermaid music?

    Do you need mermaid music?

    Hi everyone!

So I've been studying music and learning how to compose music digitally. It's A LOT to learn and take in, but I LOVE it! One thing my teacher has me do is just compose music as part of my lessons. I struggle a lot with feeling like my music isn't good enough, but luckily my teacher is very supportive and helpful! She's strongly suggesting I just keep doing it, and post it online to share with others. Because a lot of people wait and wait until they think they're good enough, and then they never get their stuff out. So I totally agree with her and decided to be brave and just go for it!

I was thinking it would be fun to create mermaid music as part of my music composing study. So my question is - do you pro (edit: and non pro, everyone really!) mermaids out there need some background music for your gigs at all? Like mermaid kids music for kids events? More dramatic music for more glamorous events?

Not sure if there's a demand at all and I'm still a newb at this music composing stuff, but maybe if I try helping you, that'll help me get better at making music too. So it could be a great way to help each other!

If you need music, what kind of music do you need??

    Thanks so much!

There is never enough mermaid songs in the world if you ask me!

So if i understand what you say well you are a beginner EDM composer? Being a beginner Fantasy/Fantastic/Sci Fi writer in the hesitating beginning phase of doing career with this artistic hobby like you seem to be also i can confirm your teacher advice. Having some public to go to and showing them your work is a must. If you trust us enough to be this people personnally i take it as a honor. That’ s very brave of you indeed, showing someone your creation is hard. I know.

I’m not a pro mermaid at all so my suggestion is totaly random but a kind of mermaid themed music i fond to lack of is about the « Dark Side » of the mermaid myth so to speak. So, i’m a metalhead and that may not be your kind of stuff (now that i think of it i really should post the few mermaid metal songs i know of in the mermaid music topic, also in this topic here there are a lot of mermaid music of many styles already that can give you inspiration for your own compositions if you want to hear this), but i think some dark electro mermaid song will probably be nice and original.

Now i think one sector where there is for sure lot of demand for Fantasy themed music and that can pay you well for your work is the video game industry. That being said i’m only a music fan not a music pro so my ideas may not be the best.

Wow thank you for your reply!! I'm so happy to hear there could be a demand for mermaid music. I'd love to make all kind of music, I especially love fantasy and cinematic music. And I love video games!! So I'd be overjoyed to make music for any indie game developers, or something small-time like that. That's still a bit far-off, but it's a very motivating goal.

I'll edit my post to include pro and non-pro mermaids, I'd love to make the music for everyone really!

I think a beginner EDM composter is a good description, thank you! I wasn't really sure what to call it, the class I'm taking is called Music for Media. So I just called it digital composing as a term I hoped most people could understand. I'm so relieved my teacher was spot-on about getting my music out there! You're absolutely right that it takes a lot of course to share my music, I ALWAYS think it isn't good enough. But if I have a good goal, like making music for my fellow menfolk, that helps motivate me to create and share. Even more so that just creating this and that random song and just hoping someone hears it somewhere out on the internet. If that makes sense? I think it would be a create starting point for me to get better and hone my skills, then I could expand into other kinds of music.

Oh mermaid metal! That sounds REALLY cool! I like metal a bit. They're not really metal, but I love Nightwish for example, so maybe I could use that as a base? Or if you have better examples, I'd love to hear them! I'm already wondering what sounds, instruments, melodies, etc would create a good metal mermaid song. I can kind of imagine a metal pirate tune, I wonder if I could work from that? Oh I love getting new ideas!!

I'm working on a more light and whimsical piece now, but I'm going to add that to my (hopefully) growing list of mermaid music to try creating. Then I'll start posting it on YouTube (and instagram??) and go from there!

Hi. Thanks you. Indeed being judged aesthetically for some thing caming from your soul is always very scary, but the more opinion (constructive ones i mean) you’ll get the more you progress (by that i mean the more you diminish the gap between the dream work of art yiu have in mind and the one you actually do because people coule have advice to help you where you can struggle at especially if they are other musiciens to give their informed opinion in your public), besides a lot of young artists mostly lack confidence and taking the habit of having your art judged reinforces your trust in your abilities. To me you make perfect sense, the most important thing in life is having a dream, holding on to yours. Personnally i dont have instagram so i would only be able to follow you on Youtube but reputation wise having your music in as many social media as you can so they are heard by most people who can like it is the best option.

They are many kind of metal, Nightwish is softer and more mainstream that average kind of metal but they are still Symphonic metal so they are metal and yes for a mermaid metal song of the soft female vocal kind that make sense for mermaid song of course it s a interesting idéal especially if you personnally have a taste for this type of band, well Nightwish themselves made a very successfull mermaid song so that s definitively can work. They re is a whole métal subgenre about pirates called pirate metal but weirdly only few of its song includes mermaids that is most certainly a area where original stuff can be done, besides if you like more cheerful kind of music in pirate metal you can still be very joyfull in comical song about rhum and having a good time while still having powerful sound.

I m going to bed but i had thinking about a mermaid themed playlist of metal song the whole day, i come up with 30 different songs i’ll post them in the mermaid music topic tommorow. The sounds, instruments and melodies are quite varied from song to song so i ll guess the best way you can discover them is hearing said songs. Well good night.

OOOOOOOO! I love music and I'd always wished I could compose. I am obsessed with film scores and I typically toggle between listening exclusively to them or to country. James Newton Howard, Howard Shore, Christophe Beck are among my heroes <3 I can't offer you any advice or anything now except encouragement and an ear to listen to finished pieces but I was hosting a podcast for awhile and if you are interested in doing things outside the mermaid community, I know the podcast community is a huge opportunity to make a little extra money too. There are tons of new podcast creators looking for a good introduction piece. And it's typically a short thing, only 30-45 seconds so it's gotta be easier to create then whole scores for indie films. Obviously would pay less too but could be nice filler gigs.

Thank you for all the amazing advice!! Once I get my social media accounts fired up and have a few songs on there, I'll be sure to share here. Do share some examples when you have time, because I don't listen to a lot of hard metal. But I can appreciate it! I'd love to try a few different genres and just be good at expanding my range.

Oh my gosh me too!! I was the "weird" kid who skipped the pop/rock CDs and went straight to the dusty corner full of movie soundtracks! That's why I'm SO psyched I finally found a teacher! She creates music for movies, video games, TV, etc. So I feel like I'm on cloud nine music-study wise!

Oh I hadn't thought about Podcasters needing music! That's great to know. I'd like to focus a lot on mermaid music, but I'd also like to just be able to make music for anyone really! And my teacher is giving me the skills I need to do that. Who knows? Maybe though the mermaid community I'll connect with people who need non-mermaid music like you said, so this could be a great starting point for me!

Also thanks so much for offering to listen and critique! When I get my social media going with a few pieces finished and uploaded, I'll be sure to share. This is great motivation! Thanks a million!

By the way - if you ever decide to take up music composing, just let me know! My teacher teaches online and she's amazing!

Thank you so much for sharing. It's very helpful to me. Recently, I wrote an essay about unusual music, which is now listened to and created by people in the modern concept of musical development of the world, and I wrote about the music of mermaids. I was very helped by the resource https://edubirdie.com/words-to-pages, which calculated the number of words, helped me to better structure my text and get the highest grade in the class.

Hum most of the time when we say mermaid song its just a normal musician doing a mermaid themed song who may or may not wear a mertail in the clip or the photo of the promotion album or even sometimes just a ocean or sea themed song (or even random songs with an aquatic feeling to the instrumental if we go to the most subjective stuff sometimes shared as mermaid song) but yes they are some in the mer community that are singers and sing mer themed song of their composition in or out a mertail some girls apparently make a living that way, well that's kind of logical your called a mermaid if you have both an interest for ocean and mer mythology and a singing talent i guess, but except for Arctic Mermaid who is member here i have yet to met someone trying to do songs specifically for the mermaid community even if i kinda wanna try to do it but i am only a amateur singer tough not a bad one so i am a bit scared to give it a try. The idea seems more or less new (unless they re is a musical mer subcommunity somewhere in the big wild web that i dont know of yet) but as many seems enthusiastic about it maybe if it does not exist yet we should make it happen together all the people here who wants to make it real. Now theyre some aquatic music subgenre like pirate metal or seapunk but i've never heard of something similar for mermaids...yet.

My favorite mermaid music lately is Mo Coulson and Chris Conway's album Spirits of the Mermaids. It just has that mermaid vibe. Might be interesting to study why it has that
