My technique is mainly for spandex and soft monofins like the Finis Foil, Mahina Merfin, Mirage Mermaid Fin etc.

I'm not sure how well it would work with stiffer monofins like the competitor or leaderfins if they were in a spandex tail. But since I don't have one, I can't tell you for sure. You'd have to try it out yourself. Let us know how it goes, if it does work out for you and your pro monofin.

I'm pretty sure the technique would work for other types of fabric, since the spaces between the fin lines act like drainage holes to allow water and air bubbles to pass through, making the tail lighter and easier to swim in. Instead of sewing the fin lines in, you can use velcro or button snaps so that your pro monofin is removable from the tail.

Here is a video showing more detail on how I make the Open Closed Fluke.

(I wasn't sure if this would be better here or in its own thread, so I'm putting it here. I figure the admin can move it if they feel it should be its own thread. Thanks!)

Right now, many fabric stores are carrying a fabric they're calling neoprene or neoprene scuba, but are in fact not really neoprene as it's referred to when people talk about the material wetsuits are made from, and also tails. Whether or not you can use either in your accessory or tailmaking applications is up to you, but I wanted to call attention to it. There is a big difference between neoprene with a foam core, and neoprene 'scuba' fabric which is mostly polyester. That neoprene scuba is a very misleading name if you aren't aware of what you're looking at. Some companies will say right on the description, 'Not recommended for athletic or water use' and that the fabric is a bit translucent, but many aren't say anything to clarify.

Here's a good article about actual neoprene vs neoprene 'fabric' used in fashion applications outside of wetsuits.

Is it Neoprene or Scuba Knit? Should I Care???

Here's a small part of that page, since a small sign up keeps popping up and won't go away.

Using the terms Neoprene and Scuba Knit interchangeably and together is the real issue as they are not one and the same.
Difference between Neoprene, Scuba Knit and Ponte

Neoprene is a foam of synthetic rubber (polychloroprene) formed, along with other ingredients, through heat and pressure into a sheet, usually sandwiched between knit fabrics of polyester or nylon, with the addition of Lycra/Spandex.
Scuba Knit is a doubleknit made primarily of very fine filaments of polyester but may include rayon, Lycra/Spandex, acetate.
Ponte is also a doubleknit made of thicker fibers of polyester often in combination with rayon and Lycra/Spandex.
Some places selling neoprene scuba knit also make swatches available for order, and that could solve a lot of problems for anyone who specifically want neoprene (polychloroprene) and might end up with the knit instead, by letting you handle it first. Also, pay attention to the listing of what the item is made of. Many online fabric stores that won't sell actual neoprene are selling neoprene scuba knit and not giving much of a clue that they're different.

AND if anyone can tell me, since I've never seen or handled neoprin, is there a chance that neoprin might also be this 'scuba knit' or is it totally different? I'd just like to know.

Neoprin is like the stuff that's on the ceiling of old cars? This is like fashion "scuba" stuff that's meant to look like neoprene for clothes right?

I'm new and not great at navigating through everything on here yet so I apologize for not having the url. I couldn't find it (even though I just looked at it the other day) you should add reef fish silicone caulk tail thread. It's amazing and what has inspired me to try and make my first hybrid tail.

I actually had a question in regards to adhesives. D: I ordered a silicone tail and it's on the way soon, but I wanted to add some Swarovski crystals on the body of the tail in matching colors so it'll add a more personal touch to the design. I thought about e6000 but I don't think it'll work with silicone will it? If not are there any other silicone-specific glues or adhesives I can use without ruining the tail. :o

In my experience, e6000 is great as a temporary solution.I've used it before on different types of fabric and it has held well (with the exception of a few pieces falling off) but never on silicone. Hopefully you'll have success with it!

I am curious if anyone has tried using a single large Dragonskin scale sheet seamed only once in the back where the dorsal fin will sit rather than the traditional 2 sheets (front/back) with side seams? I don't see a thread on here where anyone has tried it.

You could do it, like a cone, but the scales end up distorting around the back...they end up tilting upwards, but a fancy dorsal might distract from that

I cut the shape out which looks like a skinny version of Africa. I just hate to start the gluing process while adding in a dorsal and find the fit isn't what I want in some areas. You almost have to seam it to test the fit, rip it apart to make adjustments, then add the dorsal once the body is perfect. I already did the tape dummy as a guide but who knows when it comes to trying to line up the scales. I guess I can always add individual scales over the back to camouflage any Frankenstyle Flubs.

I've made one seam tails with spandex. The fluke I sew normally, where it has two seams and just sew that to the tail body.

Has anyone here managed to pour shiny, vibrant pigmented scales from Dragonskin 10, 20, or 30, without degassing? Not using Dragonskin NV, just plain, basic Dragonskin 10, 20, or 30.

I was browsing fashion templates to draw up some ideas for a new tail, and I came across these. I bought a set!
