I've tried networking through busking, at gigs and online, but nothing seems to be working. I just started about 6 months ago, but thought I would have more than 1 gig by now? Any extra advise would be much appreciated, thanks

It can help to make some gig for birthday parties of the children of your friends or people you know, take a lower fee than what you usually do (as they are friends and they're trusting you).
It's a perfect way to start as there will be other kids around and the moms will talk about you to other moms and so on so you'll get known.

Also doing free meet & greet at the seaside is an excellent option!

I hope this can help 😊

Oooooh, thanks for the wonderfully informative thread, Raina! I'm -just- starting to look for paying gigs, so this is an invaluable resource! (I only wish the pics were working, so we could see all the fun you describe in the captions. ^_^) Thanks so much again! ♥

how do you answer "what do mermaids eat" I have my first professional gig this weekend and I'm not sure what to say if ask this! Do you say Fish, Oysters etc. or do you go with seaweed and kelp? I don't want to sound like a cannibal!

    I say everything lmao
I've been at a pizza party, and had kids asking if mermaids ate pizza and what all We ate, if we could have candy, or cake, or soda (typical party foods) I say we can eat anything people eat, that way If kids offer you food, or candy or drinks, you can take it without contradicting yourself.
Tell me your secrets, sailor.. and I'll whisper mine in return.

The mers in our pod and I tell kids that we have our favorites, just like humans do. Some eat crab, lobster, oysters n' fish, but we also have vegetarian mers who eat kelp and seaweed instead.

Heck, sometimes when in a group, it's fun to even play around w/ideas like this. At times we've had a veggie mermaid saying "fish are friends, not food" -while another mer gives kids a wry grin and says "well...." with a wink. -But your mileage may vary. (Our pod puts importance on making sure kids know we mers are all different, and trying to get kids to use their imaginations, so I LOVE the other answer that was given above. ^_^) In fact, I bet you could even tell 'em you live on McDonald's burgers & milkshakes- since there's a rumor that's looong been swimming 'round that they're both mostly made of seaweed. ;D

Hope that helps, and best of luck on your first gig! ^_^

Omg I had about 150 people there! I'm exhausted! Lol I didn't realize how many kids would just hang all over you! I had 2 older ones, boy and girl that were just playing of noxious! Cup pulling on my phones and everything. I finally had to tell them it's not nice to pull on the mermaids fins, how would like it if the mermaid pull their hair. I'm sure they were probably about 10 to 12 years old. Finally their parents came up and made them leave. Other than that it was a great time!
