The artist John William Waterhouse did one called "the Siren" and the woman on the rock, her tail seems to start just under the knees.

and there was "Dragon Fly" by Micheal parks, where the tail starts top of the thighs

i would love a tail like this, actually. so much art depicts it this way, and it does create such a sensual profile. I believe the body is so beautiful, and mermaids add that extra element of supernatural grace.

His tail kind looks like some just hacked a chunk of silicone out of the back. Though the drawn picture is super cute.
