One could even wear a tail with that.
And you could let go of it and swim normally at any time, then pick it up again (in shallow parts, of course ).

It would be even better if it were a bit smaller, and less noticeably coloured.
If it blends into your body, you'd look like a mako mer when they turn on their highspeed gear
