A convention near me resently made their mascot a mermaid! She doesn't have a name yet, but they will be taking suggestions for her name at the convention I believe. What do you think her name should be? I think the mers on this site might have a better idea than some of the convention attendees.
That's cute! Hmmm, i'm thinking something typical and very mermaid-y for this one. Try Syrena, Marissa? Here is a huge list... I also know that the Japanese word for mermaid is Ningyo... Maybe try ocean inspired words in Japanese?
