Thread: Mermaid Music

  1. #21
Azurin Luna, I feel the same way ever since I got my mac computer... none of my old favorite games (or new games) work without adding windows to my computer.

Also, I was thinking about how mermaids are liminal creatures, living on the borders of water and land, and I suddenly flashed back to this Paulina Rubio song. The lyrics of the refrain are particularly evocative of mermaids: "I am a border girl, crossing oceans in the name of love, and I have been searching for this all of my life. My heart knows when it's wrong and when it's right."

    Question Mer Music.... :)

SO out of curiosity....What type of music would you listen to while mermaiding? For those of you with underwater MP3s, what do you listen to? Would you listen to whimsical music or just rock out to whatever?

What would your mermaid soundtrack be?

For mermaiding probably something from a videogame. Some cute islandy music or maybe a beautiful
orchestrated piece. Something to keep me in the mood, definitely. But do they actually make underwater MP3s??
If not you'd somehow have to blast the music underwater xD

I'm actually working on a playlist to share with you guys I have a few playlists of great mermaiding music! I enjoy Enya, Loreena McKennitt, soundtracks from movies (Legend, Neverending Story, Peter Pan, Secret Garden, Last Unicorn, Pirates, Splash, ect), and a handful of other random mermaidy songs. I have my "Fairies and Mermaids" playlist on my swimp3 player as well as others for whatever mood I'm in. Sometimes I want it more mermaidy magical, sometimes I want some high energy rock or techno, sometimes I want some really chill music.

Loreena McKennittt and Enya definitely. I would add Haley Westenra as well. I'm listening right now.

'The Water is Wide' became the love theme for Accidental Mermaid.

Lots of Florence+The Machine, Loreena McKennit, Celtic Women, and one of my favorites 'Dona Crei Tun' by Gary Stadler feat. Stephani. I can't tell you how much I love that song. It makes me feel so... fantasy-like. And believe it or not, the entire album is sang in a language she made up, to sound more 'fairy like.'

Owl city, how I became the sea is officially my favorite song ever! It totally picked me up from a slump that's had me down good for a few days. I was smiling and singing along! Thanks for sharing!
    Hugs, fishes, and mermaid kisses!

YES Syrenia!!!! I love some of the stuff Gary Stadler has done, totally reminds me of mermaids! He did some songs with Wendy Rule that are so beautiful! There's one called "Are you coming with us?" and every time I listen to it I imagine mermaids trying to lure someone into the sea....really a perfect mermaid's song!

Wow, this is a nice thread idea...I know for me, and I would imagine many others, music is such a part of life that between my iPod and my brain I always have a soundtrack going. I tell ya, thank Goddess for the invention of MP3 players...possibly the only bit of technology I would be very sad to live without. I would love to have one capable of underwater-ness.

As for artists/albums...there are so many I could think of.
Some artists that come to mind are Loreena McKennitt and Enya (both of whom have been mentioned)...also Sade, Delerium, Enigma, Conjure One, and Balligomingo are awesome for mermaid music.
    Ace of Base
's album The Bridge would work for me (espeically the songs Wave Wet Sand and Experience Pearls), as would both much of the soundtrack and score to The Beach.

Some songs by other artists on my mer-list would be:

Plane that Draws a White Line - Alias & Tarsier
I Have a Dream - as sung by Amanda Seyfriend (from Mamma Mia soundtrack)
In the Sea - America (from The Last Unicorn soundtrack)
Meditation (Wave Upon Wave) - Arlo Guthrie
    Guide Me - Arno Elias
Enigmatic Encounter - ATB and Enigma
    Wicked Game - Bassboosa
    In Existence - Beautiful World
Circle in the Sand - Belinda Carlisle
Because - Across the Universe soundtrack
The One Who Knows - Dar Williams
    I Remember - Deadmau5 & Kaskade
    Stars - Dubstar
    Come Undone - Duran Duran
Island in the Sun - Emma Roberts or Weezer
Voices from the Past - Ginkgo Garden
Letters from Earth - Gingkgo Garden
No Ordinary Girl - Indiana Evans or Kate Alexa
Edge of the Ocean - Ivy
    Like a Waterfall - Jes
A Salty Piece of Land - Jimmy Buffett
Fade Into You - Mazzy Star
    See Me Here - Orion
    Shiny Happy People - REM
Guetho A Liso - Servais Liso
    Crystal - Stevie Nicks
    Fragile - Sting
    In Sunlight - Tina Malia
    Akwaba - Tya

Geez, didn't mean to list so many (and believe me, there are more), but there are so many good songs...some ethereal, some tropical, some trancy-dancy...just depends on mer-mood I guess

Some great music and videos on here!

Thought I'd add a couple to the mix (even though this is not a super recent thread).

Come Undone by Duran Duran - not truly featuring mermaids per se, but the underwater images have always reminded me of mermaids and the music has a watery quality to it

Low C by Supergrass - this video is played before the performances at Weeki Wachee and was filmed there

I'm glad I kept searching, I wanted to find a thread like this. I love how many different kinds of music are posted here. I have quite a few songs I keep on a playlist titled Siren Songs. They're either about mermaids, or I like to think they are, or are very sea related. My favorite music is from the 20s-50s, so most of mine are vintage. I'll share a few.

Note: Most of the older songs I can't find in video form, so linking to audio sites that will let you listen.

The Mermaid Song by Cab Calloway (1941)

Moon at Sea by Cab Calloway (1940)

    Azure by Cab Calloway (1937)

The Siren's Song by Benny Goodman Orchestra (1939)

I Threw A Kiss In The Ocean - Kate Smith (1942)

Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darin (1959)

Sea of Love - Phil Phillips (1959)

Tales of Brave Ulysses - Cream (1967) (Ulysses' sirens were indeed the bird women of Greece, but the song sees them as mermaids. And it is just an epic song. No pun intended.)

Seven Seas - Echo and the Bunnymen (1984) (with the Million Dollar Mermaid, Esther Williams, 1946)

Full length Jolly Sailor Bold - Gemma Wardm Pirates of the Caribbean, Gemma Ward
