Exclamation Acrylic Paint On Lion's Paw Sea Shells?

So I'm painting seashell tops for a friend and i'm testing the acrylic paint on little shells waited for them to dry and put them into a jar full of water for a few hours. I took them out and rubbed them with my thumb and the paint came off! I already painted the shells on one top... is there a varnish or spray paint i can use that would seal the paint so they can be used underwater?
