Photo editing question

Ok, so I know pretty much nothing about photo manipulation, and I want to make something simple later today… I have Gimp, and all I want to do is put some glowy teal words in a nice font (none of the standard fonts) on top of an all-black part of an image.

What do I do? Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am so lost, and I just want to put together a little inspirational image for someone…

I know it would be easier and quicker to ask someone else to do it, but I really need to learn some basics at least, and I really would like to put this together myself.

I futzed around with Paint, Gimp, and the internet for over an hour tonight trying to figure this out... Seriously, I feel so stupid around photomanip stuff...
