Thread: Do you get approached?

    Do you get approached?

How do mers get into the news? I think any sort of publicity could help me actually get clients, and I'm starting to wonder if I should contact news sources. There are a few news stations near me, but I have NO CLUE what to do to approach them. (I post too much about trying to find work, I think. Sorry about that). I'm trying to become a professional mermaid to help me pay for school (I go to community college, so it's not a lot). I have a job at Pizza Hut, but being a mermaid is SO MUCH better.

We usually get approached but we did get 1 really good piece after making a press kit and mailing them out

I decided to send an email to the nearest city's news center (Fox 14), and they emailed back VERY enthusiastically! Now we're just trying to find a place where they can get some video footage for the story. I'm SO EXCITED!

Be careful. Most media will try and make a mockery out of your passion. Good luck.

yup we talk to them beforehand and let them know what is off limits. You gotta be really really clear. And really stick it to them, you can check ours out for ideas http://halifaxmermaids.weebly.com/media.html it does help to really be grounded in yourself and what you're doing so you can give the best answers. I also wouldnt let them film you taking the tail off or on, and if you are uncomfortable with a question give a one word answer and dont elaborate. that way they are way less liklier to use it. lol

I once had them say in the same sentence (in a print article) that I work with kids and get harassed by people with underwater feitshes. LOL nothing you say is off limits so be careful!

I would avoid telling them how much you charge/make per hour. The news company doesn't need to know that; someone interested in hiring you does and they can contact you directly. Mermaid Syrena in Singapore has had a few articles published about her lately, and it's upsetting that they seem to be focused on how she "charges $500 an hour" rather than her talents/goals.

I talked to one of the people who works there over the phone. They're basically going to go with a "mermaid who came from the ocean to live in Joplin" story.

They said that they are going to do a story that will get them interest and hopefully get me some bookings. The woman was very friendly and enthusiastic.

Contact the assignment editors for tv stations and morning show producers for radio. Lifestyle editors for print publications. Weekends are slow news days on television and they love a fun upbeat story. REACH OUT. FOLLOW UP. and most of all you must donate time and money back to the community if you want them to invest in you. Otherwise you're throwing yourself a fashion show.

I did the story with KOAM, a local news station. They aired it that day, and I have already booked a party and a couple free events
