Thread: Finfolk Productions: anyone ordered a tail from them? I just did!

  1. #401
Oooh, okay. I thought I had read somewhere in the thread that the other option was the rapid, but I think I did see talk about the trainer as well. Just misread~

Thanks for the picture! It looks similar in the other tails I was looking at too.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it will look for any silicone tail with a Competitor in it. And they did used to put Rapids in tails as their default option (pretty sure ChristoMer's first tail had one) but they stopped because there were too many issues with the ankle straps. And as someone who has also done a lot of swimming with a Rapid just by itself, I would never want to have one in a tail! The strap slips off a lot and the clip that holds it down between the feet also comes undone easily. It's easy enough to fix when you're just using the fin, but inside a silicone tail it would just be a nightmare. But anyway, when I talked to Abby and Bryn about the Trainers they were using in their tails (the betta tail might have the first one, not sure if they used it before then), it gave pretty good propulsion, at least as good as a Rapid. But personally, I am really glad I went for the Competitor upgrade.

Octavia, thank Q sooo much for replying! I appericate your answer definitely making me lean more toward the competitor than before, it's most likely what I'll end up picking.

You're very welcome! I really did think the Competitor would be difficult to use, but it really isn't (for me anyway). I was thinking it would be a lot stiffer to swim in but it glides and moves so nicely, and fits my feet so well that I don't need socks! I'm a woman's US size 9.

    I have a US size 6.5/7 so hopefully it'll fit me ><

They make smaller Competitors for different foot sizes. Finfolk would ask you your shoe size if/when you order so they can find the right one for you.

Finis discontinued their smallest competitor last year

Hmm, I checked up on the finis website and for both the competitor and the trainer and it's showing the smallest size as a medium (womans 7.5-9). I guess I might just have to go with wearing big socks or something, I'm not sure.
Feels kinda silly that they wouldn't have a little bit smaller sizing.

I'm a W 6.5 (though for water sports wear, sometimes size 4 is still to large) and I can wear the "medium" size competitor (in my tail) with 2 pairs of 2mm socks and it's just fine If you want smaller sizes, you'll need to go with another monofin. The finis foil has xs and s covering the women's sizes 3-5 and 5.5-8.

I guess Finis just doesn't have enough female customers to keep them interested. After all, they discontinued the Tempo and the smaller sizes for their fiberglass fins :/

I'll probably end up doing that then I have a lot of experience swimming in monofins, so I'd really like to try my hands...er... feet at something new, haha.

@Raina - Ah, didn't know that! Since I'm in the middle/upper end of the foot size spectrum, I didn't even think of them discontinuing a smaller size.

@Savannah - EEE congrats! What will your tail look like?

Their painting (and sculpting) skill are beyond anything I've seen. Wow, just wow. Tell me someone on here is receiving that tail? I HAVE to see more of it.

@Octavia it's going to be the fluke like Syrena has (I forget what it's called) but the colors I'm keeping a surprise for when it starts being made, barely anyone in my family knows the colors haha

You know, now that you mention it, a peacock mantis shrimp would make an interesting inspiration for a tail...
