Actually, only certain essential oils can be used "neat" (without dilution). One of them is lavender, another is tea tree oil (melaleuca), and I think clove may be one of them. Even Young Living's website advises to dilute the oils, and they give the dilution amounts for various methods throughout the site:
"How to Use
For dietary, aromatic, or topical use. When using as a supplement, dilute one drop in 4 fl. oz. of liquid such as goat's or rice milk. Diffuse for short periods of time (1/2 hour or less) in the work or home environment. Possible skin sensitivity. If pregnant or under a doctor's care, consult your physician. Always dilute before applying to the skin or taking internally. Keep out of reach of children.
Product Tips
- Put a few drops of Thieves essential oil blend in a capsule and swallow with water to support your immune system
- Put in a few drops of Thieves essential oil blend in your dishwater or dishwasher to thoroughly clean dishes and eliminate odor
- Diffuse Thieves essential oil blend for 15–30 minutes in your home or office to help eliminate airborne bacteria"
Most essential oils are extremely potent and some can damage your skin or even your organs or nerve systems if applied neat! In the Thieves' Oil/On-Guard, there is cinnamon and lemon - both can greatly irritate your skin if applied directly, and especially if you have very sensitive skin (as I do). Some of these can literally burn your skin. I mixed 10 drops On-Guard to ~Tbsp. of coconut oil to apply to the (very sensitive) problems I've been having on my face lately - for example, the stye: DO NOT WANT to put strong cinnamon and citrus oil in my eye! Diluted = all good. Same with the cold sores - too strong an application could literally burn the wound and scar my lip! So this dilution in particular is good for very sensitive areas, and I can use it multiple times in a day. I may even up the amount of essential oil, since it is quite diluted - I've been slowly adding in more as I test it, to be sure I don't start off with too high of a strength
ALSO, citrus oils, when applied, make your skin more photosensitive, which means you need to protect the application site from sunlight/UV light for at least 12 hours to avoid getting sun damage/sunburn there!!!! However, when applied to a sunburn, Thieves' Oil spray pulled the sunburn out of skin during an event last year (on both myself and others).
DO NOT USE FRAGRANCE OIL IN THE SAME WAY AS ESSENTIAL OIL! Fragrance oil is concentrated perfume. (although there are some lovely quality fragrance oil makers such as BPAL, they are not the same thing) Essential oils are not extracted for their scents (which sometimes smell nothing like the original plant), but for their medicinal qualities. Essential oils are the strongest natural medicines we have, and should be treated with some caution - I've ended up in the hospital because someone was diffusing an oil they shouldn't have been in a public area. I had to convince doctors that "no, I don't take drugs, my test must be coming back for them because of the essential oils in the place I visited yesterday". That's how strong these things can be! There's even warnings against using essentials oils on small children
They can be used effectively to eliminate flea problems... BUT NOT ON CATS. Cats don't have the same detox system humans or dogs do (they're missing some random gene that allows them to process certain things). DO NOT USE ESSENTIAL OILS ON A CAT. Keep kitties out of a room you are diffusing, just to be safe. Citrus oils are very toxic to cats, but pretty much all essential oils are bad for cats, and should not be used unless you have scientific experience with what you're doing, LOL!Dogs are fine with most essential oils, though, but I would check up online before using any you're not sure about on a dog.
...Sorry if I ramble about essential oil safety, but it's a serious thing if you mess around with the oils a lot, especially once you get past the basic three (tea tree, lavender, and clove)! I've been working with essential oils and herbs for many years, and have done much research on the matter, natural remedies are kind of my calling in life. I actually felt quite defeated when I had to go get antibiotics, as it's the first time in about 3 years that I've actually had to go to the doctorI felt like I failed as an herbalist, but then modern medicine really did evolve to supplement natural medicine, after all...
