I think I've been quite blessed with the situation I was given though. Now that I work for the Disney store everyone thinks my mermaiding is pretty awesome and they've all dubbed me the resident mermaid. Granted they all love Disney and cosplay as well so...
My friends outside of work all support me as well

For next years Dreams Take flight event where we all send special needs and orphaned children to Disneyland at no cost (including flight and hotel and entertain fees) they all want me to bring my mermaid tail and if I need to be reimbursed for my tail they'd let me

TAMW you're at graduation practice and as you walk across the stage and grab the "diploma and shake hands with one of the guidance counselors (whom you have never spoken to before) he asks "so how's your mermaid business going?"

I've never spoken to this man yet he knows about my mermaiding... ok..

/\ Just imagine how cool that would look in your yearbook!

I agree that the vampire fad is over, and logically speaking the zombie 'fad' should follow suit, though it has already endured longer and is popular for considerably darker reasons....

That awkward moment when you find a girl with a tail so you instantly gush about everyone on Mernetwork, all the tailmakers, Hannah and Linden, your plans for a silicone tail... and she has absolutely no idea what the heck you're talking about.

I got so excited! Turns out she just bought a tail because some of her friends did. Yippee.
she believed she could, so she did

That awkward moment you have to research memory for an art class, and when reading about memory you see the word hippocampus for an organ in the brain that helps sort memories, and you just know that word sounds familiar so you google it and find out that the hippocampus was named after its resemblance to a seahorse. So then you picture a seahorse in your brain. Then you still know there is something else called a hippocampus and remember that there is a mythical half horse half fish creature called a hippocampus and so just about the only thing you remember from your 3 or so hours of research is that the hippocampus in your brain looks like a seahorse and that you did a drawing of the mythical creature hippocampus on your research page.

But seriously we all have a hippocampus in our brain and it is shaped like a seahorse! Here is a link to a comparison I found of the brain's hippocampus next to a photo of a seahorse: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi...d_seahorse.JPG

Don't worry; my mind went there too when I first read about the hippocampus. Did you know that it is actually larger in female brains than male ones?

Ooh really? Do you have any more interesting memory/brain facts? My next art project has to be a piece that shows what I think my memory looks like and how I think it functions. I am still trying to figure out how I think I think

TAMW I forget to take off my new mermaid prop fangs before heading to the movies. TAMW the concessions stand guy laughs and says "I like your teeth!" And then everyone at the stand started staring. I flashed a toothy smile and skittered away.

Mermaid Wesley, if you have fangs then you should really marry a Dread Pirate and have him take your name; then he would be the Dread Pirate Wesley! to anyone who gets that reference!

Darnit Alea, I'm a rocket scientist (long story), not a brain surgeon! Still, I can offer another intriguing tidbit off the top of my head (no pun intended) and some advice....

At the very core of the brain (at the top of the brainstem) dwells the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. This is a primordial component that controls such things as fear and (apparently) sense of identity. In 100% of studied cases, transgender people have the same neurons in this region as the gender with which they identify (as opposed to that which they outwardly appear to be).

You're on the right track with the hippocampus, as it controls spacial memory. For an artistic interpretation, I'm imagining something like a dolphin's sonar; a sort of topographical map extending outward from recent memories immediately around you to distant memories deep in undersea trenches (buried in your subconscious). Those memories which come most easily to your mind and/or were most important in your life are those which your "sonar" bounces back to you in shimmering silver.

I hope that helps! Good luck on your project; you are in my prayer!

Thank you Michelle! Well unfortunately I was busy doing lots of work today and then I went to do some of my online class work only to find a 'hidden assignment' that the teacher gave us. I thought I was done for the weekly assignment. I will probably be ranting about that in another topic on here, but anyways I wanted to do some concept sketches and I really love your idea and I will probably incorporate that into something. I definitely love the sonar idea. I had been thinking of a layering effect of clear images stacked, but darned if my teacher didn't say that idea last class so then I felt like I shouldn't do my idea because it ended up being an idea he had already done! I don't know maybe I can personalize it in my own way. Anyways thanks so much!

That awkward moment (as also a male soldier), when the package you have been waiting for finally comes in, you go to your brigade building to pick it up, and as you're walking through the halls with a large box, a Sargent Major comes up to you and asks "what's in there?"

    "Don't ask, Don't tell. Sir"
Take the wave now and know that you're free
Turn your back on the land face the sea
Face the wind now so wild and so strong
    When you think of me
Wave to me and send me a song

Yeah. The chances of finding another here is quite slim. Uncle Sam released you yet or are you still in?

TAMW at graduation as the class president is giving her speech she says "we all had crazy dreams as kids, some wanted to be princesses, some wanted to be wizards, I wanted to be a mermaid! But we all grew up and made more realistic goals" and at the moment she says that everyone turns and looks at you, several saying "well not all of us"
