Hasn't it been discussed several times that Silicone caulking isn't skin safe, and degrades in the water?

Depends on the type, the aquarium safe silicone caulk is fine, you use it to seal aquarium glass and make custom aquarium pieces I've used it before in that way.

Edit: check out the "fixing up a fabric tail" thread. She used a brand called dap, as long as it is aquarium safe its fine.

No clue what to paint it with though I'm curious myself!

You't have to tint the silicone and use it as paint. Nothing sticks to silicone except silicone.

Aquarium silicone doesn't degrade in water - AQUArium silicone.

This is actually incorrect. DAP degrades and melts in waters of different temperatures. It'll crack if it get too cold and it completely dissintegrates away into milky-watery-goop if it's in water warmer than 60-65 degrees.

DAP construction adhesive silicone may degrade, but not the aquarium sealant. It most certainly doesn't melt.

    http://www.dap.com/docs/tech/00000688001.pdf

Application temperature is between -35°F and 140°F.
Not paintable. Paint surfaces before sealing.

edited to add: It's also food safe!

Maybe I'm wrong at what brand was used in the other thread. I typed my responce via phone from memory. I do know thathat aquaruim grade sillicone is fine to use. Like I said I've used it for aquarium peices myself. I've never used it on a tail, I was only referencing a thread where someone else has. I don't remember what type of aquaruim silicone ii used, but it was in a hermit crab tank exposed to 75-85 degree temps. And salt and fresh water.

Thanks, Pearlie! And yes, it's food safe when fully cured! The only temperature warning I saw about it was not to use it in 90+ degree water. So no hot tubs.

I think you are thinking of latex caulk because that is exactly what it does. ew. soda machine at work was repaired with the wrong caulking once.

I was like "Mm okay not above 90celsius that's reasonable"

until I read the next sentence. 90celsius is almost boiling. A very bad hot tub.
