When can you call yourself a mermaid/merman? Do you have to own a tail or is it just your mind set?

MIND SET!!!!! The actual tail is secondary!![]()
Definitely the mindset ^.^ if you want to be a mer person, it doesn't matter if you have fins or not. Heck, I consider myself a mermaid even though I still haven't had enough time to finish my first tail or decent warm weather to use it for my first tail swim!

I always feel like a mermaid even without my tail on.
Mermaid Enora
I would have to agree with you three also. As odd as it may sound, I'm more of a 'sea walker' in terms of my aquatic persona. Still it's the connection with the water that makes you a mermaid or merman in my opinion.
Lmao your avatar >.<

mindset!!!!!
actually. now that i think about it. do we all count as mermaid-kin?
I think that would be going a bit far. I am a human. I do not feel that I was mermaid born into the wrong body. But I am a performer who likes the aesthetic of mermaids, finds them to be beautiful both physically and symbolically, and likes to share that with other people.
Basically, I'm not a mermaid but I play one on TV. Without the TV part.
I don't consider myself a merman (yet). Even if I do put on my tail. Mostly because I don't swim often and I'm still not very good at swimming in it. One day when I can afford to move somewhere where can swim more often, then I'd probably start thinking about it more :3

Totally agree!
No. Not a true mermaid in the sense that I'm living and breathing all things mermaid, like decorating my unit, or have mermaid associated possessions. For me, I like the swimming style. It is fun, relaxing, exciting, interesting and different. Though I have many tails in such a short time, most of them are home made. I love the variety, different colors and patterns. Its kinda like underwear... You don't wear the same one each and everyday.
Same like tails and fins, at current count, I have 3 monofins of different brands, 5 homemade tails and 3 pre-made tails. I found I enjoy making the tails. Each one is unique, and each one gets compliments. I'm not the sort that looks for attention at the pool, I stick to my own lane on crowded days, I don't bother anyone else, except maybe the cutie boys (lifeguards) when it looks like they're going to fall asleep standing up!
Its something I can do at my own pace without worrying about sore muscles or hurting my feet or how many laps or circles I can swim round the pool. Its all about making the exercise fun and not a chore.

Passion, Dedication, the feeling i get staring at the ocean or anything having to do with it.
the tail and hair just serve to make it flesh and blood. more real as the idea of being a mermaid can be.
Little Sailor, Little fool, your better heed the golden rule
do unto other just as you, would like to to have them do to you
you think you can just walk away, but no, it doesn't work that way
see once your mine, your'll always be
I never give anything for free...
The last thing I would want to call myself is a merkin.
I feel like we did this thread before lol. And i agree with annwyn

I think I'd agree with the mindset, as well. I feel like there's plenty of factors that make it so. The tail of course is sort of your general ideal, but a fish can only swim if it wants to swim, and a bird can only fly if it wills itself to flap those wings. Same thing, different creature!
"Nella fantasia io vedo un mondo giusto, lìtutti vivono in pace e in onestà."
Handy tip: Don't google 'merkin' at work.
Yep. Although I kinda like having this conversation every couple months. I agree that it really isn't about the tail at all. Strictly speaking I'm a human who loves the water, and as far as I'm concerned that makes me a merman.
Speaking of which I have a funny story from this last weekend. I went with some coworkers to a happy hour at a hotel that has a rooftop bar. The hotel also had a pool on the roof. At one point someone dared me to jump in the pool. The sun had already set but it was still warm out, so I took of my shoes and handed my phone to a friend and jumped in. Everyone was really impressed that I went swimming fully dressed, but the truth is I had wanted to hang out in the pool as soon as I saw it, but it wasn't socially acceptable to go swimming in my clothes until the dare gave me an excuse.
OT. Dr Strangelove is my favorite film. (well at least the one I put down on surveys.) This came out when I was about 8. At the time I did no understand the adult parts, but they were all acting like kid in a schoolyard. That part I did get.
Later when one of my friends returned from Burning man, (She was selling merkins) I suddenly got the presidents name Merkin Muffley. Still love the coke machine scene, and the computer is like the first one I programmed, they really did take up the whole room.
Anyway pleased to meet you, I have been here all week, lurking behind the virtual fern next to the virtual pool, debating the right time to get my virtual tail wet ...
Pleasure to meet you, welcome to the forum! And yeah, the word merkin makes me think of that movie too.
BTW, If you're feeling like being a little more extroverted you could totally make an introduction thread. It's totally optional though.
I prefer being a grumpy old siren than a happy smiling mermaid.
