That Awkward Moment When: Mermaid Edtion!

I've pretty much decided I'm going to get a monofin first, for Christmas. I'll make my first tail next year with whatever nice material I can find. If/when I decide to get a silicone tail, I'll worry about the design then. Right now, at my place in life, I can't afford one anyway. Trying to develop a career around fitness and nutrition. But I wish you the best of luck with your tail!

As awesome as that is... why would someone ask why someone else is lifting weights? Generally it's usually for the same reasons so it seems like a really dumb question to me haha

I think so too, but half the time it's another woman that for some reason has just told me a huge story about why she started exercising or I'm the only girl in a room full of guys and they feel the urge to tell me exactly how to use the machines.
Seriously it's the difference between "so that's my entire life story now tell me yours" and "hey little lady, let the strong men handle it"
Why are there so few normal people at the gym? Oh, wait, I'm a mermaid.

Well when I began my workout journey, one of my biggest inspirations was mermaiding! I got asked a few times by my family what flipped that switch but of course I didn't say

Well you could take advantage of those guys "helping" you, so you don't have to touch the sweaty slimy gym machines.

I have found that women are generally less patronizing when it comes to explaining weight machines to other women. Don't know how men do with men, so I can't really do a side-by-side comparison. The thing is, I know how to use them, so I don't need them explained by anyone male or female. It's a bit insulting when they assume you don't know.
I agree, mermaiding is definitely a punch in the gills to motivate you into exercise.
And that awkward non-met moment when you got to use the next weight machine an the person who used it before you didn't wipe t down. Ick. I know I'm sitting on a foam seat covered in someone's sweat already. Just don't want to feel like I'm sitting in a puddle.

We recently re-joined the local YMCA (yes, their relatively tiny pool made me chuckle... the GAC has spoiled me completely). When my wife was showing me one of the stations where you hold yourself up by your arms and lift your legs out in front of you, she was flabbergasted that I was able to lift my legs out for as long as I did. When she questioned me, I just made swimming motions in the air.

TAMW you've managed a semblance of grace about the pool, but you have to flop out of the pool on your belly and you look extremely ungraceful. Follow that up with going into the office to rescue your glasses and in your blindness you don't realize the boy in there is changing out of his wetsuit. *headdesk*

The awkward moment when you are working private security at a Spanish language dance(*), with over 3500 maxing out the fairgrounds pavilion. You keep thinking the ladies in line look weird walking on two legs.

(*) I do not speak Spanish.
(**) some of the outfits had scale like patterning to the fabric.

This reminds me of an awkward mermaid moment of mine (January 26th of 2014):

TAM when one is trying out their first homemade monofin and it is also the first time one has swum since retiring from their (9-year) lifeguarding career 8 years earlier and it is the first time one has swum since starting hormone replacement therapy...and one discovers that one no longer possesses the upper-body strength necessary to lift oneself out of the pool!

I solved the problem by simply delivering a kick while still in my monofin; the force of the fin pushed me right out!
