Thread: How do you store your mer-accessories?

How do you store your mer-accessories?

Tops, hair clips, crowns, bracers, etc.

    Curious minds are inquiring.

For me, I have a bunch of clear storage boxes. But they do take up space and I'm worried about more fragile ones breaking/getting tangled.

I don't have very many, so my top and tail lay on a shelf in my closet and my other things go in the windowsill in the bathroom :P I wish I had a better way but I have a tiny house, lol.

I have a mini display cabinet in my costume/sewing room where I keep the more fragile pieces and then for mermaid jewelry I have a metal wall hanging with hooks and such and shells that my Mum and I made just for mermaid jewelry and such

I store my jewelry and hair pieces on a stretch of netting hanging from my wall. All of my tops are on hangers in my closet, and my tail lays on the guest bed. :P

Thanks! It's really easy, too. You just need a sheet of netting (I used a spare piece from a project) and some clear pushpins or nails.

    Ziplocks Ziplocks Ziplocks!

I have a lot of costumes to store, very little storage space, and I travel a lot with my costumes (Burning Man, festivals, touring with the band). Here are my storage/travel tips:

-Prevention! I make sturdy costumes and accessories that won't crumble and fall apart easy. (Visit my Etsy store!)
-ZIPLOCK BAGS are your friend. I mainly use 1 gallon bags, some smaller bags for jewelry and now they make 2 gallon ziplock bags for bigger things!
-I store the bags in a storage bin, since the bags are clear it's easy to find everything, I don't even have to label them. When I travel they simply go in my checked suitcase.
-I'll store a whole outfit in one bag with all the accessories included, so when I'm at a festival or gig there's no rummaging for jewelry bits, I just grab a bag and I'm good to go.
-If I want to give one a little extra padding for protection I simply zip more air into the bag like a balloon.
-For high volume fabric/flower/fluffy/fur ones I can squeeze the air out of them like a vacuum bag and it fits better in my bag.
-The ziplocks are great for feathers! I have a pair of swan feather wings (2 ft long each, see pic) and I've traveled with them in a 2 gal ziplock bag that doesn't even zip shut and the feathers don't get ruffled. Now if only they made ziplocks big enough for my peacock tail...

I'm surprised at how well protected my costumes have been, the only damage so far is one small mirror on a headdress broke, but thats what I get for putting glass mirrors into a giant surfboard bag!

One day, when I settle down from my gypsy lifestyle, I'll upgrade my Costume Box to an entire Costume Closet! One of my girlfriends has one and it's glorious, but also dangerous as she accumulates so many outfits!

I love the netting idea! I really want to display my work the way Raven of merbellas does. Instead I have everything just hanging up in my closet. I'm thinking decorated hat boxes for now til! I get shelves
