Thread: Show us your tail designs!

I LOVE seeing what people come up with for peacock tails! My finfolk tail was inspired by a peacock😁 it's truly amazing how many unique and one of a kind tails can be made out of one inspiration!

I think I was thinking about you Sirenia when I was thinking of mers who currently have a peacock inspired tail. When I read that your tail was peacock inspired, I instantly knew why I loved it haha.

Thanks for the photo - it wouldn't show up on tapatalk but I could see it on the website version. Not sure why!

Have you tried Pearl ex pigments? They do a few duo colours that look different when light reflects off them. I haven't tried them in scales yet, but they look pretty in their pots!

For the fluke - you could do a peacock coloured fluke with just a couple of big eye spots? I'd thought about that when I was drawing the butterfly fluke, but then thought a feathery looking peacock tail would be stunning.

I sometimes like to think of my peacocks as velociraptors...They also seem like a wolf pack to me because they have different rankings like in a wolf pack such as alphas, etc.

I love pearl Ex! I haven't experimented with it enough yet though. I could maybe get a good color changing effect by using some of that fabric that shines rainbow colors.

The only difficulty would be keeping the feathers in good condition. I am amazed that birds are able to keep their feathers so perfect because you can easily mess them up (especially the eye feathers) if you are not careful.

I am trying to decide on my first tail and I think I want to make a peacock inspired sequin tail. ^_^
I'm still working out some designs but I'll post the final design here!
I think a peacock sequin tail will be wonderful! Sequins have a shine similar to the way the peacock feathers shine.

If anyone needs specific reference pictures of peacock feathers for tail designs let me know and I will see if I have a photo of that already or if I can get one.

Oh yeah...keeping the feathers in good condition would probably help. Lol

WavyMermaidy has a tail inspired by peacocks as well!

I am sure a tail made of feathers would be super cool. I am sure it would be a bit tough to maintain (I don't know much about feathers though)

During my daughter's naps I've finally managed to work on my tail design portfolio. This tail is inspired by the creature Kyubey from "Madoka Magica" (a Japanese anime for those that don't know). Even though the design itself is simple it took a long time because I couldn't get the details in the fluke to look right because of the shape I wanted. I was unhappy with how the filters in Photoshop CC (I upgraded from CS6) looked on the fluke so after some googling I figured out how to make a custom brush with the details I wanted. After that it was cranked out.

I plan on designing a white scale top with gold trim to represent the gold hoops around Kyubey's ears. As of right now I don't have anything sketched out yet.

Credit for the seamless scale pattern goes to http://jojo-ojoj.deviantart.com/

    Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Speaking of which what's your signature from? I don't recognize the anime.

Oh I love madoka magica! Cool design! I have to ask why you chose kyubey though, my friends and I like to call him cat satan.
One of my dream cosplays is to do Sayaka's witch. Tail, armor, and all!

His ears demanded to be made into a tail (even though he's an evil little furball). Sayaka's witch tail was already designed so I wanted to do something different. Seeing you as her witch would be super cool.

    Show us your tail designs!

Coming back to the peacock theme... Has anyone tried laminating peacock tail feathers? I love the thought of a fluke with real peacock feathers in it and if setting them in silicone doesn't work well, maybe laminating them in thin plastic would? I might have to try to see how it turns out.

Editing as I think some more...

If you laminated and cut out loads of real feathers (I'm thinking peacock, but any feathers would work) and then attached them like you would with a sequin tail...

I have no idea if this would actually be feasible, but I really want to try. When I finish my first tail, my second one might not be silicone...

Or if you have a lot of free time you could hand paint feathers on

My only concern would be with the laminate itself, tbh. That stuff tends to peel apart after a while and I don't imagine it would last very long being submerged underwater or put through as much stress as your average tail.

Ah... That could definitely be a problem. Oh well, it seemed like a good idea!

Pearl - great design. Those colours go well together and I love the dragon-like dorsal fin!

I found my peacock feather scale prototypes...the scales are clumsy, this was from when I started working with silicone...
