    What's Pearlie Mae doing now?

Thought I would consolidate the things I'm working on into one place, basically because I just don't have the time to go searching all around for tailmaking threads I have underway. I will still update individual tail threads, but this is sort of a catch-all. I didn't want to start an external blog and take people out of Mernetwork.

For my first trick...Look at my awesome new pigment!

    Looks good
See, the chameleon pigment totally works on top of the black base.

Yes, I've known about the black base for a long time.

Okay I've been up since 4am, I'm coasting on maybe four hours of sleep and I just watched the video.

The first few seconds had me like

"Oh it's a pretty gold and black color, that looks neat"

And then it starts changing color and I'm like

    "... wait what the shell"

And then it KEEPS CHANGING COLOR and the whole time I'm like

"WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT, PEARLIE?! WHAT IS YOUR SECRET?!"

Seriously though, I am actually kind of tripping over how amazing that new pigment is. Color changing tail??? Ohmycod, yes.

::EDIT:: Personally, I would love to a see a tail that's mostly a solid dark color (not necessarily black, but maybe like a dark purple?) but then have like fancy markings or patches or stripes that are made with the polychrome pigment. That'd look PRETTY FREAKIN NEATO I THINK.

I caught it on FB and was wide eyed and needed to watch it a few times. My little guy, curled up next to me in bed, says: "What's dat? Mermaid tail?" I said yes... And then the smart little guy proceeded to tell me how it works: "It gets closer to the Earth and turns purple. It gets closer to the sun and turns Gold."

Just scrumptious. I officially want a Pearlie Mae piece of sculpture art/tail.

HOLY CRAP WHAT? WHAT? I need the science behind this. HOW? That's amazing, Pearlie!

You have? Because I kinda thought you said this wasn't going to work. I could be wrong. Not trying to make waves or anything

My tail making questions thread clearly stated that this is what I was doing. It's not like I can trade mark the process, and I'm all about idea sharing.

    But here's the rub...
The way I see it, you were either doing it and told me it wasn't going to work to keep the idea to yourself, or you are working with my idea and calling it your own.

    Neither are very cool right?

I feel like implying that Pearlie "stole" your method out of some selfish, malicious intent is kind of reaching, tbh.

I agree with Tieri. It's been almost a month, trial and error sometimes leads to success!

It's not stealing if I put it out there. I don't think she's malicious. But I am totally confused. I seriously considered giving up and that it wasn't going to work because she said so. I totally hope I have it all confused. I think PearlieMae is amazingly talented and also super nice and helpful.

And I really do believe that maybe she did it first. Because she does make amazing things. It's just that I really thought she told me it wasn't going to work

Erm...it doesn't work when you mix it in with silicone. It gets muddy. I guess I wasn't clear between the first reply and the second. I have hit upon a way to get it to show without peeling off the topcoat.

I used The chameleon pigments in 2013, for my entry into the Merfest Tailmaking Contest in January '14. It wasn't perfect, and there have been scales that had to be replaced - and that was a pain - and have been cranking out scales by the thousands since, testing and perfecting all along the way.

I wasn't trying to deceive you, and I certainly wasn't stealing your idea.

And, quite frankly, I'm feeling rather smacked in the mouth in my own thread, now. I have read and re-read the post over and over, and I thought I made myself clear at "I use it sparingly...", but I guess not.

I was not trying to discourage you. Whether you chose to give up rather than experiment is not my fault.

And yes, I HAVE known about the black base for a long time. My problem was with getting the pigment/topcoat conundrum right, finally. That's why I posted it recently.

I'm really not trying to smack you in the mouth. I'm sorry if it came across that way. I'm trying to communicate that I have no doubt you would have done it first because you make awesome stuff. I'm just confused as why you wouldn't have thrown it into the convo on my thread? We kinda have been chatting on it this whole time. I didn't give up, and I know even if I did give up it wouldn't be your fault.
I'm sorry. I guess I really was confused about what you were warning me about.
And I publicly do apologize. I don't mean to come off like I'm some hot shot with a super secret patented method that someone's stealing. I really really don't mean it like that. You do great work. I just started.

I was being too touchy. I've had a lot happen in my life in the last few weeks (ending up in a wheelchair and finding out my rare condition has some really bad complications develop and now have an average life expectancy of 48 when that's 12 years away and I have 4 special needs kids to take care of) and I misunderstood you. That's no excuse though. I didn't mean to make you feel attacked, and again I'm sorry and was confused about what you said in my thread of tail making questions.

Oh shit! I'm so sorry we've had a misunderstanding! I wasn't trying to mislead you at all! I only have my phone to get online with at home and perhaps I would have explained better if I could see what I was writing on a big screen instead of eight word chunks on my phonescreen.

I'm so sorry for what you're going through! Maybe we both are feeling a bit touchy, but I have nothing like your circumstance to put it on. I apologize with all my heart!

Can we reset and start again?

Glad you've sorted it. You're both doing some cool stuff with those pigments

I saw your color-shifting scale on IG and was really excited to see a tailmaker figure out how to use those pigments!

As a nail addict I'm big on all things multichrome. Those pigments definitely are meant to be used over a black base. That's how they do it for the most extreme effect on cars ("chameleon" pigment topcoat over a matte black car is most common), and the same logic applies to nail color. The pigments can be mixed with other colors to some degree but they are VERY easy to muddy, and that's just applying them in paint. So seeing that super-clean shift on silicone was VERY satisfying. I can't even imagine the time it took testing to perfect this.

    So, squee! Great work!
