Somewhat Comprehensive Guide To Mermaid Media

This is a guide copy/pasted from my Facebook listing and giving my personal rating on a scale of 1 to 5 stars of all the mermaid-related books, movies, and TV series I've seen. Please keep in mind that the ratings are VERY subjective, as they're based on my personal opinions, so many of you may not agree with my ratings and that's totally fine. The fact that I'm very biased toward vegetarian merfolk who can speak to/are friends with sea creatures, and kid-friendly, non-sexual media has definitely influenced my ratings. Still, I hope whether we have different taste or not you can get ideas from this guide of new mer-related media to check out. Enjoy!

Great idea. You missed a Bewitched episode from later in the series. It's the one where Serena becomes cursed with a tail by none other than the Loch Ness Monster (in human form).

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm familiar with that Bewitched episode, but I didn't really plan on listing every TV series with a single mermaid-themed episode as that would be a very long list indeed. In order to qualify to be listed under mermaid TV series there has to be at least two or three mermaid-themed eps.

Right now I'm watching Ondine on Netflix, which I'll add later as it's a selkie film and selkies are closely related to mermaid mythology.

OK, I said I wouldn't, but here's a by no means comprehensive list of TV series with individual mermaid-themed episodes, from IMDB and TVTropes combined with my own memory:
    Aladdin-"Shark Treatment"
Bewitched-"Samantha and the Loch Ness Monster"
    Charmed-"A Witch's Tail"
    Dark Angel-"Gill Girl"
Doc McStuffins-"Get Set To Get Wet"
    Faerie Tale Theatre-"The Little Mermaid"
    Futurama-"The Deep South"
    Grimm-"One Night Stand"
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys-"Love On The Rocks" and "My Best Girl's Wedding"
Jem and the Holograms-"The Rock Fashion Book"
    Man from Atlantis-"The Siren"
    Night Gallery-"Lindemann's Catch"
    Pair of Kings-"A Mermaid's Tail"
Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders-"Jewel of the Sea"
Sabrina: The Animated Series-"Wiccan of the Sea"
Sabrina: The Teenage Witch-"Thin Ice", "Witch Way Out"
    So Weird-"Fathom"
    Torchwood-"From Out of the Rain"
    Xena: Warrior Princess-"Married With Fishsticks"

Another one to add-there was a mermaid character who appeared in three episodes of Fantasy Island, played by Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas fame. She's a fairly complex character, especially for that kind of feel-good old show, not entirely good or bad, and immortal, plus she says she gets angry when someone mentions eating fish, yay! Probably one of the mermaid characters I've seen who seems truer to mythology

There's also the animated series "It's Punky Brewster" with the episode "Fish Story".

Mermaid TV shows and movies I still need to watch that are apparently available on YouTube:
*Fantasy Island episode "The Mermaid Returns"-Already watched the other two mermaid episodes of this show and really enjoyed them
*Disney's Aladdin episodes "Elemental, My Dear Jasmine" and "Shark Treatment"
*Diver Dan(1961)-Vintage kiddie show about an underwater world populated with puppet fish and a beautiful live-action mermaid queen
*Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid(1991)-Already started watching it a while ago, but got sidetracked and moved on to watching other things. Quality-wise, I remember finding it fairly mediocre, better animation and writing that the H2O animated series, but not nearly as good as the Disney's The Little Mermaid series
*The Daydreamer(1966)-An anthology of Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales in stop-motion
*In Search Of The Titanic(2004)-Ultra-obscure animated film that is apparently quite bad, judging from it's ridiculously low IMDB score if 1.1(for comparison's sake, even Splash, Too which only a handful of people including me of course liked has 3.5). That's probably the lowest score I've ever seen for ANY film! If I end up enjoying this one, it's proof that I'll enjoy anything with mermaids in it, regardless of quality

Added The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe to OP. Mermaids don't play a big role, but they're clearly seen swimming to the Pevensie siblings' coronation near the end of the film

Watching Diver Dan on YouTube! The show is cheesy and dated as heck, but Minerva the Mermaid is so pretty and it has an odd vintage charm about it. Plus it has talking fish!

LOVED that show as a kid! A friend actually made me a DVD of the first few episodes.

Minerva the Mermaid is such a good leader, she has such a sense of fairness and justice. Why can't politicians be more like her?
