    Mertailor? (RECENT REVIEWS ONLY PLEASE!)

Does anyone purchased the silicone spellbound tails from the mertailor within the past year? I've heard my share of horror stories about his tails, not fitting, falling apart, ect, but has Eric improved recently? Thanks

I've heard his work has improved since that horror period way back when, but I can't vouch for the past year--I'm also interested in getting a firsthand report of how his work/quality is these days.

I know he's always had big seams on the sides of his tails, but I think I saw mention that this was fixed about 2-3 months ago for the Spellbound series? I don't remember which thread I saw it on/if it can be confirmed, however it was enough to pique my curiosity. More information would definitely be appreciated, I'll be watching this thread.

Okay, I did a little combing and found this:

@TheMermaidQuintessence seems to have exceedingly positive feedback on the Spellbound series, and also says they have done extensive research. I'd talk to them about what they've found. I'll drop them a link to this thread, too.

He now has more blended seams in the spellbound line, amazing customer service. The spellbound and allure have a full silicone fluke so no monofin. Hes not who he was 4 years ago. None of us are

Hey guys! responded to your DM. Unfortunately the spellbounds seem to be a bit hit or miss on comfortability. My tail's silicone foot pockets just aren't practical. The silicone straps can rip quite easily, and they're just over all extremely uncomfortable to be in, for US! Many other people have had fabulous experiences whos tails are beyond comfortable.... I also know of at least 4 others who've had similar experiences to me and my mersister. It just seems to me that there's stll work to be done in order for this type of foot pocket system to evolve. Mertailor's customer service is PHENOMENAL! by far the best part of working with them. they answer questions promptly and are always helpful, but theres also a hit or miss factor with the paint jobs coming out the way the customer envisioned. I've spoken with a few others who've had similar problems to me, where they wrote out EXACTLY what they wanted for their tail, and many or the instructions were ignored. In the end I did end up paying more money to have my fade brought in on the tail, to t point i had originally wrote that i wanted it to hi, but that direction was one of the many that either wasn't read or was ignored. Mertailor himself is amazing, and his company is growing and making these amazing mer creations! their paint jobs are BEAUTIFUL no matter what you get, because their paint is vibrant and well applied, but it doesn't always come out as the customer intended as far as pattern and design. my foot pockets...are so uncomfortable that for all intents and purposes other then paid gigs, i avoid my tail at all costs. Since receiving it back from being fixed after the straps began to rip the first time, and i got it repainted, I haven't put it on to swim for leisure once. it's just too uncomfortable. If i wrap it i can go about an hour before the pain kicks in, but without wrappingi can't make it 15 minutes. the silicone digs in right at t top of the heal of my foot in the worst possible way. atm, I'm considering attempting to cut it back myself, since I can't afford to send it back again, and miss out on gigs again, and pay to have them redo it again. It's just not practical for me atm to put more money into a tail that seems to have reoccurring problems. Again, though I'm not the only one having strap, uncomfortability, and paint job problems, Many MANY other mers are having amazing 10/10 experiences all around with the spellbound line and I'm beyond happy r them. Though I can't personally say I recommend a spellbound, as if I could go back in time I wish I had saved the money for a full silicone tail, with a more reliable monofin,I suggest you do research and ask other mers, since many many are VERY happy with their tails. I can't afford another tail...so for me, I'm kind of stuck just using this one for gigs and such, and I moved to a place with a pool, but I dont know how oft my tail will be used outside of gigs, so i personally wish I had spent more money on a more well established product, rather then going for something so new that hasn't been fully figured out yet.

I'm sorry that your experience was so negative! Definitely not considering Mertailor anymore!

Again, I highly recommend doing your own research and asking other people. I am only one person, and mertailor is a fabulous company.

I recently had the chance to meet Eric at a mermaid meet up. He was super nice and is always looking for feedback on how to make his tails better. The people I know that have a spellbound tail absolutely love it! They have nothing but nice things to say about their tails. I'd say the spellbound tails are probably the best silicone tails on the market if you're on a budget. There's lots of other tail makers out there that do make cheap silicone tails but they honestly don't compare to Mertailor. I wouldn't rule him out just because one person had a bad tail experience.

I ordered a Spellbound Triton tail in the beginning of Sept and received it a few weeks ago. I've put in on a few times (I wore it for about 2 hours to hand out candy and for an underwater photoshoot last weekend). Yes, it took time/struggle/sweat the first time I put it on but it was just as difficult to put on as my full silicone MerNation tail (except I didn't need water based lube to put it on). FYI, it was also a ton easier to put on in the water than dry. I had leggings on when I put the tail on and I wore regular socks when I wore it for Halloween.

I did measure several times before I placed my order. I had my mom do it, then my sister, then my Fiancé. Then I took those numbers and measured myself...and averaged them to what I thought was most accurate. I also went about 2 inches higher than my belly button because I wanted a high waist (& not have it too low in the back). It fits exactly where I want it. The tail body is very stretchy.

Yes, it is difficult to put your feet into the straps but my MerNation foot pockets are very similar so I don't think it's "just a Spellbound" thing. Also, the foot pockets force your feet to point (all tails do this). I have flexible ankles (a good ballet toe point) and I use a ballet foot stretcher a few times a week. That may help for those whose feet hurt once in the foot pockets also if you know you're going to be swimming in it for hours...wear some scuba socks/booties. It's like if I was going to be wearing high heels for awhile ...I know my feet are going to hurt even though the shoes fit ...it's the nature of the beast.

My paint job is similar but not exact to my requests. I'm not an artist and I know my written description was confusing (even to me when I read it again). My colored drawing definitely looked like a cow with black and white spots and thank goodness it didn't turn out that way. Eric got the colors I wanted perfect but the design was more of his artistry with a bit of my idea influence and it turned out to be exactly what I loved. Try to keep an open mind that the tailmakers are artists and as much as they are trying to create your "dream tail" it's still going to have their touch and look. The Spellbound tails are also on the very budget end of the silicone tails...Mertailor puts a lot of details into the tails but if you pay 3-4 times as much you are likely going to get more imput into the details.

Thanks everyone here for the feedback on the Spellbound -- I was keeping an eye on this thread and it's still worth considering.

So Eric recently posted this picture about measuring and I thought it'd be good to add it to this thread.

The reason so many people are having problems with their knees and ankles was probably because they measured themselves wrong.

Measuring correctly will help prevent pain in the ankles and knees that some people have been experiencing. I also suggest going up a shoe size or two so that you don't have the same problem I experienced, though I can't verify for sure that that would help. I know my issues didn't come from measuring and correctly, since candy had sent us specific instructions on how to measure and we did so accordingly. I also don't experience any pain in my legs at all, just where the monofin digs into my skin. Theoretically if you went up a shoe size or two and wear swim socks it should stop this problem from happening?

I just tried one of his tails in florida and my feet were insanely comfortable, way better than a monofin. I am thinking people are measuring wrong/ just not having accurate expectations for how silicone tails feel!
