Hey everyone!

Hope you all had an awesome holiday!

Just popping in to let you know that my prices will be changing as of February 1, 2016. I'm working on tails #10, 11, and 12, so I think it's time to start bumping up closer to the market average. If you'd like to order a tail at the current price, it must be paid by then. I do have a bit of a queue, so work wouldn't start on your tail until late January/early February, but you'd lock in the current prices which are:

Base tail: $2000
Dorsal fin: $150
Accessory fins (ankles, side, etc): $60 per pair
Blended waist: $60
Custom sculpts: will vary by design, begin at $250

The NEW prices, going into effect Feb 1, will be:

Base tail: $2000 (will stay at this for a while still)
Dorsal fin: $225
Accessory fins (ankles, side, etc): $100 per pair
Blended waist: $100 (because it's so much more work!)
NEW Skin tone blended waist: $50 (this was previously offered for free, but they're getting popular and skin-tone pigments are expensive)
Custom sculpts: will vary by design, begin at $300 for accessory fins, $600 for a fluke

As always, there is no charge for adding glitter or iridescent topcoats, because the world needs more glitter!

I will also soon be selling tops! My first top will be shipping soon and I want to get some feedback on it before offering them for sale, but here's the pricing I'm considering:

Base scale top: $150
Add fins: $100 per pair (so same as for a tail)
Add scrollwork: $50 (I'll have pics of this so you can see what I mean, it's similar to Merbella's Atlantis style)
Add silicone pearls: 15 for $50 (mixed sizes of small silicone pearls colored to match the rest of the top, or whatever contrast color you'd like)
Add flower: $50 (similar to the flower hair pins but made of silicone, painted to match the top, and permanently attached)
Add halter-top netting: $10
Add resin pearls: 15 for $50 (only available if you add netting, same color options as the silicone pearls)

The tops will come with multi-way clear bra straps and are available in sizes 32-38 A-D, thought I may have to substitute a "sister size" (up or down a band size, opposite for cup size, like they taught me while I was working at Victoria's Secret) if the exact size you want is unavailable. I will use a nude, white, or black base depending on what works best for the colors you have in mind. There is a small scale extension on the "hook" side of the closure to cover up the "eye" side, so the color of the bra won't show through even if you have it on the loosest fit.

I'm working on designs for a seaweed top as well, but am nowhere near being able to offer that for sale yet.

I made a mini prototype (about 1/6 the scale of a real tail bag) just to see if I could actually make anything, since I've barely ever sewn before, and it turned out great. Yes!! That's a great idea. I plan to get one of your tails by the end of the year and that would be so helpful.
As for being sturdy enough - I would go with something like drill or canvas for the fabric. Those are nice heavier duty fabrics. Perhaps you could line the bags with a stronger fabric and use a pretty one on the outside.

I was thinking of using a ripstop nylon fabric for the lining (bonus points for being waterproof!), and a layer of heavy interfacing between it and the outer fabric to give it some strength. Maybe even some fusible interfacing too so it doesn't stick to the tail and turn inside out every time you use it. So it would be outer fabric - fusible interfacing - heavy regular interfacing - more fusible - ripstop lining. I've also found some strong water-resistant zippers that should work well.

I have 3 tails on the books right now that will be debuting in the next few months, and may be able to take on one more order before I have to stop working in preparation for spawning (sorry, prospective clients, someone's called dibs on that spot already). I want to keep working until June or July, but as this is my first pregnancy, I can't predict how I'll feel. I'm not sure when exactly I'll be returning to tailmaking post-spawn but I DEFINITELY WILL so have no worries on that front.

Not sharing this on FB yet, as I have a few IRL friends and family who follow the Syren Studios page and I want to announce on my personal account first.

So glad I finally found this thread! I was SyrenStudios second customer (3rd tail total I believe).
Got her in July of 2015. happy to say that she has held up incredibly well. There are a few alternations that need to be made (the waist needs taken in, and some paint scrapes need repaired, normal wear and tear stuff). SO happy to see Lily getting more recognition and business!!!

Hello! I have been meaning to post on here for a while now and am finally getting around to it! I am one of the customers who she is making a tail for before her mer-ternity leave. I wanted to thank everyone on here for all they have shared. It was so helpful back when I was trying to decide on a tailmaker.

I've officially closed tail orders now in preparation for my MERternity leave (get it!?), but I will be still be taking THREE top orders! I decided to give you awesome merfolk at MN first dibs, since you've been supporting me from day one in this weird and amazing journey I've undertaken!

Currently I can provide tops in the following sizes:

32A/B
34A/B/C/D
36A/B/C/D
38B/C/D

or if you fit into one of their "sister sizes" - go up a band size and down a cup size or vice versa.

Pricing Info:

Base scale top: $150
Add fins: $100 per pair (same options available as for tails*, except no dorsals!)
Add scrollwork: $50
Add halter-top netting: $10
Add resin pearls: ~25 for $50 (only available if you add netting, can be made to match the rest of the top or in any contrast color you'd like)

Tops will come with both clear and nude straps that can be attached any way you want or left off all together.

*I wasn't able to finish the sculpts for the Scylla accessory fins before my doc told me no mold-making fumes around the developing merbaby. So those will have to wait. Both designs for the Phoebe and Nymph styles, as well as Roman's badass custom fins, are available! (not totally sure those bad boys would fit on a top though...)

Even a small one? For my swimsuits, I make them to fit on the back between the shoulder blades and just below the rib cage. So that when the tail goes on, it doesn't squash the dorsal fin.

These tops are built on strapless bras, so there's no real back to speak of. I think the back bands are only a couple inches. Someday I want to offer more corset-like tops that could support a short dorsal, but for now there just isn't space.

Glad you liked the video and pics! I've been having the time of my life with my tail! Got some swim footage, but it was night so it's very dark and grainy. But you can still see how beautiful the fluke flows in water.

I'm angry at myself because my tail is so new and I already effed it up. I was in a cart with my fluke pressed against it, was being wheeled around an event for a couple of hours, flipping my tail up and down. I think the pressure against the side of the cart made the tears around the monofin.

I have a tailmaker friend who's going to fix if for me next weekend. Lily was wonderful, she sent me the pigments for the fix!

Hey everyone! I know it's been aaaaaaages since I posted but I wanted to give you a quick update!

My little merling Aurora arrived on September 14 and I am so in love it's ridiculous! She's just over 4 months old now (where does the time go?!) and while this whole parenting thing is way harder than I expected, it's also basically the most awesome thing in the world.

That being said, momming has left me zero time for mermaiding or tailmaking, and I expect that to continue for some time still. I'd originally hoped to be back in the studio by now but clearly that hasn't happened and I have no idea when it will. I don't want to put her in daycare - mama needs her baby snuggles, and honestly the $ I'd get from making tails wouldn't cover the cost of daycare in my area. It's possible I will be able to start working on the weekends while my husband can be home to watch her, but she is very much a mama's girl and needs lots and lots of attention. I may start small with just tops for a while (got plans to start offering seaweed tops!) and see how it goes.

I'm super bummed not to be at Mermania this weekend, but I hope you all have a whale of a time!

I am still as in love with my Syren Studios tail and top as much as the first day I got them! You are correct that they are beautifully fluid!!
Mine swims beautifully. My fluke is enormous so while it offers a great deal of propulsion, it also takes a good two kicks to get going. I think it's a matter of personal taste. PM me if you have any other questions!

Hey everyone! I know I've been super quiet here, FB, instagram... pretty much everywhere. I want you all to know that I'm still sketching and still planning to return to the studio. I've got a bunch of non-mer projects right now that are occupying most of my free time, which is basically however long my daughter naps during the day. Currently I'm working on designs for a seaweed top and a new set of fluke and accessory fins inspired by water fairies. I'm calling it the Aurora set after my little girl! I still don't know when I'll be back to the studio. We're thinking of putting her in daycare/preschool part time in the fall, just for the morning a few days a week, both to get her more social interaction and to give me time to do something other than mom 24/7. I'll be starting small, with tops and accessories, but I may need to do a Kickstarter to source some funds for a new air compressor - mine has started to rust out from not being used and I'm scared to turn it on in case it fails and ruptures! That's what I get for buying the cheapest one I could find, right?

Thanks for the recommendations for elastic, guys. I ordered a HUGE spool of nude elastic so I'll be able to make a ton of headdresses! Here's the first one!


Features faux flowers and greenery with Swarovski crystals and pearls, and real seashell accents. Remarkably lightweight and secures with a stretchy elastic band under the hair. Netting is great for keeping your hair out of your face underwater!*

Hey everyone! I wanted to give you a little update on where I am in re-opening my studio.

So the little merling is now 3 1/2 (where does the time go!?) and will be going to preschool in the mornings starting in April. This means I'll have mornings to actually work on mermaid stuff for real! I am currently revamping my original textured scale sheet (the Syren scale) and making a new one I'm calling the Naiad scale. You can see them here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B810XnBnHvm/ - Syren is the top, Naiad is the bottom. I'm about halfway done with the Naiad sheet and 1/3 done with the Syren. I'd forgotten how long these sheets take to make! I won't be able to take tail orders for the new styles until they're done, but the original scale style is still available. The new scales are much thinner, so the tails made with them will be lighter and fit more tightly. I've had some clients say that they get a waist gap while swimming in their tails so I'm doing everything possible to combat that, including making the waist smaller in the back so that it hugs more closely to the natural curve of the spine.

Since my time is more limited, and material prices have gone up (seriously, monofins are twice what they used to be!), I will be raising my prices to $2500 for a silicone tail. I'm still hammering out the details of what the new prices will be for accessory fins, but those will be going up as well. I've also found a new material that I hope will make for a better blended waist, as well as working on a sculpt for a scale fade that can be added to the waist of the tail to create a smooth transition from scale to skin. This will all have to be tested on a willing mermaid guinea pig (fin-ny pig???) so the very first tail made with it will receive the upgrade for free. I can also use this new, nearly clear material to make transparent fin tips, which is super exciting!

I've completed sculpts and molds for a seaweed-style top and will be making the prototype as soon as my funds come through (shuffling some stuff between banks at the moment, which is a serious headache!).

Basically there's a lot going on right now but I'm working towards re-opening the first week of April and having the new scale types available shortly after that.
