View Full Version : Back seams?

So...currently I'm in the process of making a latex tail. Wish I could afford silicone but ain't nobody got the dough for dat. Anyway, I made the inside of my tail today (I don't like the idea of having bare latex against my skin and I want it to have some backing and strength) and instead of having two pieces to sew together and two side seams, I used a duct tape dummy and I made one back seam. It worked pretty well despite being a little difficult and having to take it in quite a few times, but I was considering doing this with the scale seam? Has anybody ever tried or successfully done a back seam?

it looks doable, are you going to put a dorsal? that seems like the best way to cover a single back seam

I know someone did that, but the name is slipping my mind. I remember that she said it was pretty difficult though

Yes, I do plan on doing a dorsal! I figured if I have good enough seams in the back PLUS my dorsal the seams will be virtually invisible.

That's what I plan on doing for mine as well

I did a back seam in my fabric tails with no problems at all. I thought about hiding it with a dorsal, but truth be told, no one ever really notices a back seam.

I have a cloth tail with a back seam and dorsal and another with side seams and fins both ways work great to camouflage seams

it seems to be something only petite people can do because otherwise two pieces are needed. At least according to a few tail makers who have tried it. I haven't seen it done *well* yet, but they usually hide the seam with a dorsal fin

That makes sense, being 5'1 makes it easy haha

I've been trying to work out how to get the single back seam. So, you made a duck tape dummy, then cut it down the back, and used that for the pattern? Is that right?

You'll get a better fit if you just take your measurements and pin the perimeter on the cloth. For my silicone I'll be putting the measurements on pattern paper so I can lay out my scale sheet

I took my measurements today and the pattern for the one piece taol looks so curvy and awkward, it seems like that would make it really hard to put the sides together when theyre silicone. Does anyone have experience with single seam silicone tails? Should I straighten out the line to make it easier to seam or do you think that would ruin the fit? The single seam works great with fabric imo but I'm worried about the silicone matching right
