2015 MerNetwork Secret Santa: General Interest & Discussion Thread

[MerNetwork Secret Santa]

Five years of Secret Santa-ing on MerNetwork already??? :)
As per feedback from last year, we are hosting registration and the general discussion stuff even earlier to account for how long it takes to post gifts internationally... so... GO! :)

Here is a general overview of this year's rules (you agree by signing up):

- We recommend that you spend no more than $15 on your gift (this includes handmade crafts, but exceptions may be made if an item is worth more than $15 but is second hand - as in the giver had it).
- If you do spend over $15, don't be upset if you get a gift that cost less.
- Your gift has to be mailed by November 15th - you must be able to commit to this.
- You must state if you are comfortable with being partnered with someone with an international address. (PLEASE TAKE SHIPPING TIMES INTO ACCOUNT!)
- You must be an active user on the forums with at least 30 substantial posts before Sept 1, 2015.
- Accounts made after September 1, 2015 will not be eligible to participate.
- No food, anything live, dangerous/illegal, or inappropriate (NSFW).
- Don't send fragile things unless you're absolutely sure they are protected.
- Your sign-up address does not have to be your own if you have privacy concerns (use a friend’s name and address, etc) – as long as you can still receive your gift.
- Do not share anyone’s information or real names anywhere.
- Gifts are mer-related!
- If you fail at sending a gift even after you've given your word of commitment, or break the privacy policy, your account will be publicly acknowledged as being owned by a jerk and you will be banned from future exchanges.
- Registration will end on Oct 15, 2015.

Privacy rules and disclaimer are the same as last year's.

Discretion and Liability Agreement
By agreeing to sign up for this event you are agreeing to the following terms:

• All private information of the gift-tee (the person receiving the gift) that will be disclosed (including names, addresses, and photos) will remain private (unshared, un-spammed, and only used for this transaction) unless sole permission from the gift-tee says otherwise. Failure to comply to this rule means you are banned from participating in any other exchanges.

• If you sign up and don’t send a gift, you will be forever known as a person who is unreliable and can’t follow through. Also, people on the forums will generally think of you as a jerk. This is a commitment. If you do not honor this you will be banned from future participation.

• You cannot hold the organizer responsible for the gift you receive or for any liabilities. This is a community event and I have no personal vested interest or ulterior motive in organizing this activity.

^ It's likely that you both have Santas though, just assuming by the random nature of pairing (so people don't send gifts to each other). If you sent gifts to each other, you'd both get two gifts, and two other people wouldn't have Santas and wouldn't get their gifts. I hope Spindrift can sort it out soon!

So I think I might be a day late mailing my gift (the 16th instead of the 15th) just because I'm doing a convention that weekend to make extra money, which will help a lot with the shipping fees. It'll still get to my person really quickly though!

Still waiting on the gift I ordered for my Secret Santa to arrive. :( Really hoping it shows up by the November deadline so I can mail it out! Gonna check the mail again in an hour, and then I'd it isn't here by tomorrow night I'm gonna email the Etsy seller I bought it from. Paid for it three weeks ago, was marked as shipped from the UK the next day... Still not here. :I I'm trying to be patient because, realistically, this kind of mail takes forever to get to my island anyway so this isn't anything out of the norm, but I'm getting so antsy. XD Especially because I know my Secret Santa is gonna LOVE what I got them!

Going to try to get my gift shipped tomorrow, I'm a bit worried cause there is a strike amongst Finnish postal office, we even haven't got any mail after Monday :S They say though it shouldn't affect on shipping services, we'll see tomorrow :)

I wanted to say in advance that my gift will be mailed a bit after the final date; but I wanted to explain why. Last month my landlady contacted us and said she was not going to renew our rental contract, so we had to search for a new house. As you can imagine, this was a bit of scare, so we began to look for a new place to stay. We did not find any, and we were starting to get worried. Luckily for us, a co-worker just told us she is moving to a new bigger house, and offered us her own for rent. We saw the house last week, we loved it, and we got just yesterday the draft of our contract.

So hopefully I will be able to get the gift ready over this weekend, and I hope to ship it on Monday.

I apologize, and I hope my giftee understands.
