Hello folks! We are starting a thread for NC Mermania 2017! I will be posting updates on behalf of the group as details are nailed down.

To start I'd like to introduce the current (pun) staff! (and by staff I mean a bunch of people volunteering to make this work)

We will be adding more to the staff as we secure a few things so be sure to check this main post for a summary of most recent updates.


Last year was a real splash, and we heard you loud and clear. Participants filled out a survey which the feedback from has been the main inspiration for many of the changes and new things will be applying this year. We want to keep that intimate, drama free, social aspect, but still offer you new and unique experiences and chances to grow.

Right now, we are still trying to secure our venue and pool which will determine the dates. We still expect due to availability, to have the event in January. We feel this is still the best time to prevent conflict with other mermaid events around the world. Of course, if we can't nail it down with the pool we'll be sure to let you know ASAP so you can start planning and saving. Our planned pool is the same awesome facility as last year, the GAC.

We have a list of workshops we are working hard to secure based on the feedback from the last one. We will be approaching well known and skilled mers in the community to provide these workshops. We know everyone has a lot of ideas, but it all comes down to the people being able to run them, and the budget!

We will have a space for vendors with more information on that soon.

We will have a ball and a mixer :)

We may have a few surprises ;)

We have some special guests in mind but will not be announcing them until everything is done contract wise. But let's just say we think they will make a splash.

We will have some positive media lined up.

We will have kid's swims and be looking for volunteers who are willing to submit background checks (more details on this soon!)

In order to bring the best event possible we'll be actively looking for sponsorship from local NC groups, and mermaid related businesses. In addition, Dan will be working with the local tourism to try and create funds and support.

We know everyone gets very excited and have a million ideas and suggestions, just know we are still in the process of nailing down our budget and while we'd like to do EVERYTHING everyone wants, we need to look at what's feasible too. I am really excited personally for all the new avenues we'll be exploring and I am sure we'll have some unique content not yet seen at other events.

So keep an eye on this thread, the page, and join the group! Our staff are working every day to plan and organize, so we'll be posting many updates.

November is my birthday month I went to Florida last November.

For the past two Novembers I have celebrated my birthday by donning my faerie wings and attending FaerieCon East in Maryland. It looks like in 2016 I'm shooting for NC Mer-Mania in January, Faerieworlds in early September, NC MerFest Beach Party in late September, and FaerieCon in November. Last year the Maryland Mermaids took over the pool at FaerieCon and they invited me to join the fun! :)

I know not all people in NC will be okay with this or are okay with it, but with a big community of LGBT and supporters in the mermaid community, I was wondering what would be done to protect those mers.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We still plan on having our event which practices inclusion of all people in NC. (mainly because these are the venues, hotels, we have lined up, and where the owner of mermania lives) But you raise valid concerns, and I will chat with the other staff. I feel it would be simple enough in our terms of agreement with the venues to have them sign something agreeing that all people and merfolk are to be included, not excluded. We also had security last year and at the other local conventions, and that should be doable again this year.

I will let you know the outcome, obviously with multiple LGBQTA mers in our community, this is important. The community of Greensboro was very supportive last year, and so far have been extremely supportive this year. They *want* the event hosted there, and are doing what they can to make it easier.

I would like to point out as well that I have attended all the NC mermaid conventions, met multiple Trans mers, and none were ever discriminated against. Though, I recall the Mirage Hotel, the original location of one of the mercons, was extremely homophobic. We have had nothing but positivity from our connections, and some of our trans friends were featured in positive light in local news as well.

I personally do not feel like this will affect our convention, but none the less will make every effort to ensure that it doesn't.

And just to clarify, the article I read had only pointed out trans. Obviously, my statements will apply to the whole LGBQTA community. Everything in our power (and then some if I have to, haha)

So the Governor of NC signed this ridiculous thing. Way to embrace the Stone Age, there. I know two protests were scheduled for today. Here's hoping they made a difference.

Before NC Mer-Mania 2016 I made sure there were "family" restrooms one could use if the choice of the other two was not a comfortable option. I also discussed with the director about the nature of mermaiding and the absolute inclusion and equality of the LGBT community. I am uncertain about a family changing area but I will find out this week.

If anyone had any issues with discrimination at the GAC, Aquarium, or hotel please let me know either here or via private message.

As for how the GAC and City of Greensboro will react to this ordinance I will certainly find out as quickly as I can. And remember... I am NOT the Governor of NC. I did not make this call.

I will also be contacting the Triad Equality Alliance regarding how this ruling might affect future events. I will involve them further, if need be.

Bottom Line - You are my friends. I do not want anyone to be upset, uncomfortable, or heavens forbid fearful. I WILL be staying on top of this.

to be fair, when mermania was founded there were multiple posts from organizers that merfest was done. lol it wasn't done to confuse people, just to move on with a similar feel. I am not 100% convinced merfest will happen, this is the 3rd event christomer has claimed will be happening (remember mexico? lol)and the others didnt. I know caroline was running merfest for this fall and that was cancelled (not included in the 3 as it was a separate venture through her instead) If it does, then that's nice to have another event for people to go to. Perhaps they should consider a new name since it's no longer in NC and people all seem to associate it with NC

I am working with the Greensboro Tourism Bureau this time around, to find the best hotel that suits our needs. I let them know that the Sheraton was wonderful but there were two other hotels in the area that also have wonderful indoor pools. I'll post information as it becomes available!

You wanted it? You're going to get it! Mermania is happy to announce Mermaid Hyli and her husband J.Berendt Photography will be providing an underwater posing class, along with underwater photography!
We will have details on this awesome opportunity in the coming months. This was one of the most requested items on our feedback, and we are so excited this awesome couple have risen to the task!
Hyli is a well established mermaid model, travelling, and working with many well known photographers. I can personally attest to her husband's skills, as the photos he took of myself and my mer-friends went viral online for all the right reasons.
You wont want to miss out on this chance to up your underwater modelling game, and get some amazing photos in the process!!!

Good question! I would love to go, but I'll still be 17 at the time. Can I still participate in all the activities? (I won't be forced to the kiddie pool, right?[emoji33])

The mixer, and the ball will have alcohol being served. We are still determining what regulations we'll be placing on children, and those under legal drinking age to both conform with NC regulations, and create spaces that are for adults. All of those details and many others will be announced once we settle on a hotel.

We are working with the city to get better hotel rates, to make things more affordable. So we can't move forward with scheduling until we know what hotel we have and what common areas we'll have access to.

To get an idea of how much tickets for Merfest will be.... How much were they last year?

Coral I don't believe the entrance ticket was much, maybe thirty ish dollars if my memory serves me right, maybe a bit more. But the dinner/dance was also a separate ticket fee and then of coarse the price of the hotel and any transportation depending on how far the hotel is from the aquatic center this year.

Hiya :) so I'm new and I've been scrolling through and I really hope I'll be able to go. BUT one thing is that I'm poor (not literaly but it's hard to make money even with a job) so I'm kinda scared I wont feel "welcome" or "worthy" with my tail (which will be made of neoprene and sequins) as all the professionals will be there with their gorgeous tails. Plus I'm kind of young (I'll be 16 by then). Or am I just fretting over nothing >_<

Delphine, I think anyone that attended last year will tell you that it was a wonderful, welcoming, drama-free group of people coming together for a few days to share a loved passion. From the pictures, you can see that there were all manner of tails including many STUNNING sequin/neoprene creations! One of the first mermaids to gain widespread notoriety is Hannah Fraser, who from the beginning has created numerous gorgeous sequin/neoprene hybrids. You will be in very good company! So please, do NOT feel intimidated. The very first tail I made was out of a green trashbag and I ROCKED that fin!:cool:

I'm considering coming to this event. I loved the last Merfest I attended. Will anyone else have a Merbaby with them? That would make it more fun for sure! I would bring a sitter with us but I enjoy getting to hang out with other mermommas and their babies. FINGERS CROSSED I can make it this year! I would most likely drive the 8 hours or so to NC, as my SyrenStudios tail is just too ginormous to fly with. I know info has been slow folks, we are trying so hard to get the dang hotel nailed down. They took their sweet time. And then once we settled on two to choose from, others sent us proposals. We are trying hard to pick the cheapest but best service for everyone and lower the cost overall, along with minimize extra travel

I really hope I get to come! I talked to my mom about it and she seemed interested in letting me go. I just hope I can afford to come! I only live 3 hours away so travel is no problem, it's just hotel pricing and the event costs...which it shouldn't be too big of a deal!

Hey fish fans, you're all so amazing whenever someone needs help and my friend Venessa, The Louisiana Mermaid needs help! Her family was evacuated from their home as you can see in these images why. Her husband was a hero and risked his own life to save a stranded police officer. She, her husband, and two young children have been displaced. While they thankfully have insurance, it will take a while and they are currently staying at a shelter with neither parent being able to work. Immediate expenses really need to be taken care of. I'm so glad yall asked this bc I too was confused by the dates and the current website didn't have info on hotels and events during MerMania. Hopefully events will be posted soon. I'm so excited to hug old friends and make connections with new ones. Floods are awful. I remember when our house in Bokeelia was flooded and the insurance maybe covered 30%. The mold that grows by the second and the cost of labor that can be inflated due to high demand plus the looters.....I pray things go better for Venessa. This is for sure a tragedy. I'm moved by yall pitching in and I plan on doing so also. What a great community we are all a part of!!! ❤️����

MAJOR UPDATES:

Mermania 2017 updates:
Thank you so much to everyone for being so patient with us while we have all been dealing with personal things, and playing phone/email tag with our contacts while we try to nail down details for everyone.

You may recall, that part of why we’ve taken so long to finalize details is that we were working with the Tourism board to try and get better… everything! This has been a giant back and forth process. After Dan toured all of the potential hotels, weighed all the pros and cons, compared pools, breakfast, room rates, and services… we feel that we’re better off sticking with the same hotel as last year… The Sheraton!

While other hotels offered some of the things people wanted (such as breakfast) for an only *slightly* lower room rate, they also had high fees for parking, were further away from our venues, smaller pools with no late night access, and expensive internet fees. We know you reallllly wanted a breakfast included, but made the judgment call that you all wouldn’t be willing to sacrifice all these other things for it!

So what is the big difference this year with the Sheraton than last year? This year we will have access to multiple rooms for some of our workshops/panels, AND the Ball. That’s right, the ball will be ON SIGHT meaning far less commuting, a for-plate price for food (making sure we don’t run out like last time and giving more menu options for those with dietary restrictions), and having everything located at either the hotel or the GAC. This should give everyone a lot more time (no more rushing between places, less commute time, a chance to rest in between things). Of course, we will have access to the pool into the wee hours of the morning, and for those who had a “fun” experience in the hot-tub on Sunday night last year… don’t worry, we brought that up haha.

Please read the following information before sending in your questions:

The Ball! We decided to go with a more general theme as to not limit people, or add to the pressure of cost! Our theme this year is…. *drum roll please* The” Fathoms Below Ball”! What do you think of when you imagine the deep ocean? Bioluminescence! So bring your glow sticks, accessories that light up, and glitter! We encourage any form of semi-formal/formal attire and you can be as creative as you like. Chanel the Abyss! The ball will take place at the hotel for added convenience!

Events:
We are still nailing down the schedule so we can be sure to make things as easy to get to without choosing. We will have our mixer/craft swap, our workshops, a group photo, panels, the ball, and this year we’re trying to have an official goodbye ceremony to get together one last time before everyone heads out.

Kid’s events will consist of the kids swim like last year sponsored by Mermaid Linden, and we’ll be having a mermaid story time for each group before they head into the pool. We’re looking for volunteers for the swim and story time and encourage people to start getting their background checks in.

Workshops are still being juggled but will likely consist of: Safety, Merwrangling, and underwater posing. We may add a few more but for the time being we don’t want to overload people with too many choices for scheduling.

Photography will be offered through J Berendt photography (Part of the posing workshop), Shelli Craig Photography (Dan’s wife who did some of the amazing work last year), and of course, Sean will be chasing you all. People are invited to take their own photos, provided they do not interfere with the photos of the professionals.
Vendors will once again be welcome, and have the chance to vend at the mixer and goodbye events as well, as opposed to just at the pool. More info on Vendors coming soon.

We have a number of special guests we’re moving to confirm now that we have these details, and we’ll let you know soon.
I know you’re all going to want to talk money and what things will cost. Please be patient with us as we’re just finishing up those details so we can map out the budget of what we’re working on.

Finally, we’d like to welcome Daphne Clem aboard officially. As you’ve seen, Venessa has had to step down due to the devastation of her home after the Louisiana floods. We are so thankful for all of her hard work thus far, and know that Daphne will be awesome at picking up the torch and keeping things moving.

Tips for travel to Mermania!

If you are international, get your Passport and have a backup photo ID asap. It can sometimes take a while to have these, so make sure you do.

For international, when going through customs, you’ll want the full address of the hotel where you’ll be staying. Don’t do anything that might suggest you’re working at the event or that it’s a work event. You’re attending a convention, and you can tell them the website if need be. Having printed copies of receipts for con tickets can help as well.

For international, give yourself LOTS of time to go through security and customs. Make sure you have nothing in your bag that goes against the rules of what can come on the carry on (liquids, weapons, etc). You may need a dr. note to carry your medication on the plane, OR it must be in a bottle with all the script information clearly printed (no faded bottles). If you have ANY food on you (even simple things) you MUST declare it when you’re going through customs. (even an apple, tell them you have it!)

For international, travelling with your tail can be extra trickier than those in the US. If you can, pack your tail in your bag but be prepared you may have to pay extra luggage fees. If you absolutely have to check your tail as a secondary luggage or in oversize, make sure all of your information is printed on the container along with FRAGILE. Give yourself time between flights. Tails can often be delayed if they’re in oversize, and if you barely make your connecting flight, chances are your tail will not.

You may wish to purchase a phone roaming package for the trip so you aren’t stuck with huge fees

My question is what are we doing as a community to help our fellow mers? As I said I don't expect to move the convention, however I'm sure there are still concerns for LGBT mers and family attending the event. Legally LGBT members have no recourse should something happen. I understand we don't have to attend the event, but I don't think we should be singled out either, this is one of the largest Mergatherings and we do want to go. Could there be plans to change venues next year? Will there be any acknowledgment of the discrimination? Something?

I have spoken personally with the GAC and the Sheraton about this very issue. They assure me that they disagree with HB2 and that they do not discriminate against those in the LGBT community. Finding the right venues with the right viewpoint was important to me. That being said, elections are in November, NC is losing money hand over fist because of HB2, and I fully expect this to be resolved by the time of elections. But know this. NC Mer-Mania is in my backyard. You are all my friends. And I will fight to keep my city accommodating to all.

We've also invited a well known trans-activist to speak who is also a fan of mers! But not looking like it's going to line up with their schedule which is a big bummer :( you never know though!

Believe me this is a very upsetting thing and we're doing all we can to make things as safe as possible. We have hired security, have agreements with all our venues, and as far as participants in the convention there will be signed forms in place that cover everything under the sun- including this. It has been aknowledged multiple times and addressed directly with our venues.

We are all VERY hopeful that the elections will take care of this matter.

Last year, the trans community was welcomed with full arms, several members being featured in a positive light on local news as well. We stayed with the same venues specifically because they were so supportive last year, and promised to be so this year. I don't see a reason to change venues next year if they continue to be cooperative. Changing states is not something that can be easily done with an established convention- espcially when it comes to certain legalities and taxes and insurance, Dan is the owner of the convention and lives in NC. Especially after established connections and support.

The mer community actually has a very good history of addressing this stuff. One of the earliest mer-conventions was going to be at the mirage hotel, until it came out that the hotel manager was a huge bigot. and it was moved last minute despite the inconvience. I've been going for 4 years now, and all of the conventions I've attended have been in NC. Previous conventions actually had parts open to the public (such as a fashion show in a mall) unlike ours which is all pretty inclusive, and have yet to have an issue.

I'm not sure if you've attended these in the past or not but it might be cool to hook up with someone like Justin or Ed or Julz and ask them about their experiences at the previous conventions :)

Shuttle: There will be a shuttle like last year from hotel to airport/air port to hotel, but it only runs at certain times. As we get closer to the event we'll start a thread for carpooling

Ball: Our theme is "Fathom's Below". The idea is to replicate themes from the Abyss of the ocean. We'll be making use of black light and glowing. Ticketing for the ball will go up soon, and included a plated meal. Please let us know if you have celiac, a serious food allergy where cross contamination is a concern, or need a meatless option. Thanks

Vendors: Vending is now live on the website. Reserve your table soon before they sell out.

Events: In addition to what's listed here we will have a ticketed mixer with a craft swap, a group birthday during the ball, and a closing ceremonies (included in main ticket price). Events will start around supper time Friday night and wrap up supper time Sunday.

Workshops: We are still nailing down all the workshops but so far you can expect underwater posing with mermaid Hyli and underwater photos as part of the workshop with her husband Joe. There will be a safety workshop, and a merwrangling workshop.

Panels: We will have an expert panel consisting of Finfolk, Marla the retired Weeki mermaid, and Chris O Brocki. WE HAVE MORE PANELISTS but we are keeping them a surprise for the time being. We are still working out the Merfolk of Colour Panel.

Special guests: We have some secret special guests in the work, and we can't wait to share them with you. Keep an eye out.

Photography: Will be provided exclusively through J Berendt photography (Hyli's workshop), Canadian Mermaids Inc (Sean) and the ever fabulous Shelli Craig. Everyone is welcome to take their own candid photos, we ask that you do not compromise the photography of the staff photographers (such as getting in their way/shot, taking photos over their shoulder etc)

Kid's event: Charlotte will be our head volunteer for the kid's events, and she will help me (Raina) in organizing the kid's swim (sponsored by Mermaid Linden) and kid's literacy program (Story time with mermaids). We will be starting a sub group for all people who wish to volunteer for kid's events and other aspects of the con. We need people to take shifts swimming, and reading stories. We will keep shifts short in order to be sure you don't miss anything. But all kid's volunteers must provide a criminal background check

Other Volunteers: We will absolutely need other volunteers. We need people to help mind the registration tables, people to help set up workshops/panels, and people to check tickets/wristbands at doors. Volunteers will be comped with different aspects of the convention for free based on their level of involvement.

I am really just so thrilled so many of you are planning on coming.

Again I apologize it's taking so long to get the tickets up. Both the hotel and the pool are slow to give us anything we need, I don't think either are used to hosting conventions. I think we're going to have to make it clear if we stay at these locations next year that we get everything we need early on in the year because it keeps bottle necking everything!!!

But once we get a few bits of info from them, we'll be able to finalize a few things, and updates will come pouring out!

From what to look for in hiring someone, what to do if you don't have one, and what to do if you are the merwrangler! Moving mermaids, safety, helping with the business and more.
The workshop is $15 and Sean is actually volunteering her services so the workshop cost will go directly to help offset convention costs. (isn't he a nice guy that way?)
Sean co-owns Halifax Mermaids and Canadian Mermaids. He has an HR Certificate and a Business Degree. He's been working for small businesses most of his life and help manage a team of 9 in Halifax. He's well prepared to answer your questions.

Hi hi -- long time no type. I'll be there - hello I live here ha! - and depending which car I drive and if sweet hubby comes I may be able to shuttle some of you over from CLT - GSO. My team will be there as well except for Kym who is going to be running around in St. Croix Bonnie and I are tentatively going together and our philosophy is the more glitter the merrier.
Speaking of outfits I lent a few dresses out last year and am more than happy to do that this year. they're all floor length and most are jewel encrusted cause pageants. Most of the dresses are 2/4 but I do have a few larger sizes if you'd like to borrow one of my high end gowns. Please just return them before you go! They're just sitting there not dancing and I'm sure you'll look pretty ! Just shoot me a face book message - I am not on here much.

I'm excited to meet everyone this year and have more social time. I believe this will likely be my last con, I am starting to feel pulled towards philanthropy and conservation full time.

My husband Eric, my daughter Esther Grace and I will be for sure attending! I can't wait to see old friends and meet new ones. My daughter has met other mermaids on our Caribbean adventures but hasn't been to a mermaid convention yet and I am ecstatic for her to meet so many friends who have watched her grow up online. I was pregnant with her at the first Merfest there, & I was told that my body would not medically maintain a pregnancy due to my health at the time. I attribute her staying with me bc of all the love and positive vibes at Merfest. It feels like a life time ago at Merfest I rubbed Connie's 5 month pregnant belly for good luck, passed out after our fashion show (sorry Luma again, but I didn't know what was happening to me) , and ate so much at the ball my dress popped open and my mersister Lei Loni had to pin me back up in it lol....happy tears over here with such fond memories. I still have my medal and photo from winning the MerOlympics on display here. I'm looking forward to making new beautiful memories! Shannon I can't wait to swim with you again and yes we have to get all glammed up for the ball. I will bring my Merbellas tail, my new Kariel tail and top & my sequined tail.....plus Esther's tails. If anyone has a baby between NB-18 month size I can bring Esther's baby tails to loan for some fun pix. Just let me know.

Your photographer is welcome to come but as mentioned previously, one of our rules is that the hired photographers have exclusivity- which is a common standard at conventions and similar events. This means your photographer would not be allowed to take anything other than candid photos of people as it would undermined the people who are offering their services this year. He's welcome to network for next year etc obviously. But this if a formal rule we're enforcing this year to avoid some o the mishaps that have happened at previous conventions, and we have already turned away several other photographers- some who were local. (It's nothing personal, if you look at various online postings this is something we've been saying for months)

But, he's certainly welcome to hand out business cards and network with people for future opportunities. :)

this has always been the plan. We are waiting on some information about trans rights in NC (given the current political climate) that literally resolves today, in order to ensure we have the right legal grounds for our wording on rules that will protect our trans participants. (which was previously discussed) However, the rule about photography has been discussed here, Bonnie was explained it in another threads months ago, it's on the website in the summary of the underwater photos, and has been posted on the summary of the underwater photos in the group. It was announced the moment the underwater photographers were announced.

As a private event we do reserve the right to adjust our rules as we see fit, such as the case with the new requirement from our venue the GAC to have swim tests for kids who want to swim on the Divewell. (something we hadn't originally planned as a rule, but came up recently as a stipulation during meetings with the GAC and was posted accordingly to warn everyone ahead of time)

OK great. I will say we are a little slow getting back at the moment because of triag-ing stuff by priority and I am doing a lot on my own remotely. The theme of the ball is "Fathoms Below" so we encourage people to dress up in black light and glowing items if they feel like it.

TICKETS FOR THE BALL ARE NOW LIVE. Our Fathoms Below ball is inspired by the deep abyss! You will have the ticket options to attend the dinner and ball, or either one.
We start with a plated dinner at 6:30pm, in the beautiful Four Season's Ballroom. Our meal will be set up in a buffet style and you can choose from multiple proteins, veggie dishes, pasta dishes, bread, and more. Our exact choices will be determined a little closer to the event once we have a better idea of our exact numbers, but the catering is specifically through the hotel and everyone will get enough to eat. There will be a cash bar so we advise parents bring young ones at their discretion, understanding adults may be drinking alcoholic beverages.

So I just got my hotel room. I had to call bc King size beds were not offered through the website offered on this thread. I just wanted to share that if you require something larger than a double bed, that there are options if you call. Squeeeeeee!!!!!!!!
