I just saw! And her starting price isnt bad for an on the budget mer. Maybe I'll consider her tails before stepping to full silicone. Around how heavy would you say the tail from her is?

Ill be making my leg double sometime this week and filling it with expansion spray foam i know already I've seen a few mers put too much ill do it in small batches until it's filled im also going to put a pipe through it so that i can either make a stand for it or hang them up with hooks from the ceiling well see.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

PearlieMae
05-16-2017, 03:27 PM
The expanding foam has a tendency to expand too much at first, then the next day, you'll find it has contracted a lot as well. Experiment with a small prototype, so you can see the coeffient of expansion and calculate from there.

Marinus Mortimer
05-16-2017, 06:27 PM
Ill test it thanks PearlieMae i hadn't thought of that!

i literally stabbed my dtd with a kitchen knife in a rage after expanding foam repeatedly ruined it. I don't know if a coefficient would have helped. That stuff is the polymer incarnation of the devil himself. Please just don't.

I'm sure it will work out. I have no doubt that you, and by all means Pearlie Mae, could definitely make great things of expanding foam:) my problems with using materials have many layers, definitely one of them being my lack of both of your mantras. 'Slow' and 'test test test!!' Do not come naturally to me. I'm working on it but- it's a process, lol. Good luck!!

Marinus Mortimer
05-16-2017, 09:23 PM
Yeah its definitely a matter of patience for these things i my self am not so good at it usually i just walk away for a little while to relax and not smash everything when it doesn't look how i want it to.
I made two leg duck tape dummy one for mazu and one for me i bought 4 big tape rolls so i had plenty of tape ill be getting the foam sometime this week ill also make a little dummy of my feet to experiment on first before i go for the big one im sure its about applying small amounts very small and wait at least 24 hours between applications so like PearlieMae said it can have time to shrink so i can get it right but yes test test test

Aweeee thanks Merwandering that means a lot coming from an amazing artist such as your self :swoon:

Also i found this while searching the forum its a great idea for filling the leg mold and it worked great in the video i might try this foam before i try the troublesome spray foam thanks a lot for the great advice guys!

This is also a good way to keep the spray foam from warping the mold although he did put a bit two much at the beginning i would have worked in layers of small amounts allowing each "batch" to cure completely

I have found that the foam stuff does not for some reason work well when making a body double. It tends to distort the form.

I use bubble-wrap and other packing materials to stuff my tape-double, as it's light weight.

The liquid stuff? What happened in your experiment ? The reason im looking for a way to fill it so that it stays stiff cause on top of the leg double i will be sculpting the tail body on top if it so i need it to hold its shape under the continuous pressing and sculpting on top of it you know so if the fence post stuff is a bust ill be going back to the spray foam idea ill do it slowly allowing each batch of foam to rise and fall like dough ill also follow the bald guys instructions and get the one with the lowest expansion rate that way ill kind of have a bit more control, im doing this as an alternative to spending a butt load of money on plaster bandages to mold my legs and then the resin plus fiber glass to make the cast that for me is a whole new ball game as ive never experimented with resins before so ill try my damm hardest to make this successful if all else fails ill invest in the above... wish me luck https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170517/1a68bc2304159a3f0405b955b5e93475.jpg

you can do exactly what you've done here but instead of using tape you use fiberglass that is activated by water. (the type they use in hospitals when you break your arm. then you can fill it with foam.

done it, works well.

I found they have something similar or the same used to seal broken pipes and stuff

Not this one exactly but something like it could work?

Ok just had a look at the brand. as it didn't state it was fiberglass. yes this will work just fine

couple of things to remember. with water activated fiberglass you usually can only use it once. meaning once air gets to it, it will harden. found this out BTW. so when you wrap your legs, wrap in ONLY one layer otherwise you won't be able to cut yourself out. cut STRAIGHT down the centre of your legs (FRONT) I find this the best way as it make it easier to seam.

line the seam up, wrap some twine around the model and tie up gently. this will keep the model from dis-forming when you are putting in your foam. I found that you only need a bit as it expands 2X the original size.

Ok [emoji1419], i was thinking that instead of closing it completely i would leave a line about one mm wide, open so that i can slip out, a good example of this is shown in the head mold video above where the guy leaves an open line down the back in order to liberate his head then seals it up after with more plaster bandages in my case it would be this fiberglass tape, i think that could work? Cause i dont trust no electric saw cutting anywhere near the family gems [emoji184] lol. And about the dis-forming of the mold ill be practicing with the foam on the tape dummy first cause im lazy if it works I'll probably keep it and store the fiberglass i get for another occasion cause all the kelp i got is my mom and she may not be so accurate especially with something like fiberglass lol.
Thanks for the advice Trident !

you can just keep on going and going until you get it to perfection..... the thing is you have to draw the line somewhere. it looks fine as it is. it's going to be interesting to watch your ideas on your extension. fortunately i will be working on mine tomorrow, funds get it the way of me completing it and LIFE.

I know if perfection is what i seek ill never finish! Yessss once i finish this sculpting chapter ill be buying the lexan for the extension because ill need to know how much ill hace to sculpt for my tail body im thinking it wont be too long of an extension just about 9-10 inches from the back of my feet to fluke base or tail end. Well theres a sight chance ill be moving soon so im multitasking with finishing my fluke sculpt and assembling and painting my fabric tail for the meet up and mermaid parade on Coney Island this June or is it June already? Who knows, any how this is the first area to me finished im extremely happy at how it turned out as it was difficult using the plastic im a big area but my ingenuity helped me out.

Heres the result...

I could share photos of when I sculpted a bust years ago :/ ... It's helpful for when and if you ever have to redo it, you have photo documentation of what you did to help.
As for imperfections you are trying to ignore... Only you will ever know they are there, I don't think anyone else will ever notice. It is looking beautiful!

The completed fluke is just blow minding!

To sculpt the scales is the most challenging part of a tail in my opinion, it takes really a lot of time and your back feels always terrible after a whole day of sculpting! But I'm sure your scales will be amazing if they are going to look like the one you already posted on your page

Yes I made each scale different too even if it's not that visible and that was the part that took the longest to be completed!
I was thinking to make a scale sheet too but I am not a fan of them.

Yes I remember that scale shape it's awesome!
Again this tail is going to be a fantastic piece of art!

I posted before, I didn't add them to mine because I wanted everything the be individual scaled. However, smaller scales are a pain to pin down, but if you aren't getting your scales any smaller than an inch or 3/4th an inch, it shouldn't be an issue.

Ight thanks izzy i wont do the small scales on, ill leave them for the individual scaling later down the road i did start sculpting super teeny small scales for the first row of scales those are going to be hard to mold so ill add those and leave the other 7 scale sizes for the latter.

I think it's absolutely gorgeous the way it is now. On most tails (and in real fish) the scales seem to stop at the fluke and it's just smooth spines going down it, and idk the simplicity of that is just really pretty. It allows for intricate details in other areas without making the tail look too busy.
Not sure if that was what you meant by "the top" but that's my two cents!

No what i meant by the top is as you said where the scales stop and fluke begins like the picture bellow of a finfolk fluke sculpt...

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk ooooh yes I absolutely love those kinds of tiny details :swoon: Just having scales on the fluke part itself is gorgeous. But also one of the things that differs a really high quality tail from others are the tiny scales that fade out into the fluke. If you've got the time, yes!! Go for it!

I don't even have gorgeous scales like the ones you've made, the ones I'm making are simple circles but I definitely want to add the tiny "fade out" scales to the fluke. They just give it such a flawless smooth look.

Hello everyone who reads this thread, thanks for sharing this adventure with me! Ive made a discovery looking through pictures of BTS Mako Mermaids, what i discovered was hoe they dropped kilos from their H2O to their Mako Tails...

I was going to keep my discovery to myself but its always better to share with everyone!
So in the picture below you will see the crew getting one of the actresses into her tail, what i see is the crew adjusting something inside the tail and some pads that could be some type of foam or neoprene.
I came to the conclusion because ive been in the drag industry and if any of you know they get those voluptuous thighs, yes they use hand carved foam pads under a scary number of pantyhose or whatever there called, the point is that the achieve thickness and as we know the mako tails are THICK so back to the reverse engineering of the pictures, i saw the two twin looking pads and immediately recognized them as hip pads it was a light bulb moment. I remember seeing a BTS video when one of the girls mentioned how JMB FX Studios had updated their technology and their tails wight like 30 kilos when they used to weigh like 60something i figured thats the main reason for the drastic change in overall tail shape from the H2O tails to the Mako ones.

I hope yall can understand all that ill leave the pic below for yall to observe and maybe see what im trying to explain, point is its a grat way to save on silicone when making such a huge tail...https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170614/4e96a3fa321721ccf385620e4caf7a81.jpg
My best guess is that they are adjusting a pad that goes in the negative space between the thickest part of the calves to the rise of the heel bump then the ones that lay outside will be but on the side of the thighs the give them that look...

Thank you very much indeed for sharing with us your intuition!
So they use pads to maintain the tail shape and hide heels clever, but not that much in my opionion because in our case when you're alone and no one can help you to adjust the pads inside the tail it's a problem I suppose.

Anyway do you have any other news about your tail?
Sorry but I'm just so curious!

Good news I got hired for a job that pays very well this will slow down this project a bit but it also accelerates the progress to save up the founds used to buy the materials which have been a lot in clay alone i also want to order a better molding material for my fluke cause as i learned the plaster sold at hobby lobby is not practical for big applications like my dorsal molds which both ended up braking so i threw them out the window literally, in essence new job, more money, faster assembly. All i have to do left is make extension prototype, sculpt the tail itself then mold the fluke scales and tail body after that assembly and paint. Wish me luck hopefully by the time i post again ill be molding the fluke and scales and sculpting the tail...

Thanks guys today was my pallet jack test and i passed so im hired for now, now to keep the job, i dont know hoe many of you have aor are familiar with working in a frozen warehouse but its all about safety, right now im still in the "training" stage so any little accident will get me fired but im pretty sure il be good.

Now for more good news we finally got an apartment and are moving out of the shelter tomorrow if tomorrow is Friday lol i dont count time, so seance i never got a chance to buy the materials for proper molding without risking it cracking with the cheap plaster i got, in short i cut the sculpt in halve because its 1: too heavy to lift in one piece without damaging the surface & 2: because its too wide to go though the door if i was to somehow lift it and not having it break from bad weight distribution so yeah i cut off the top part that connects fluke and tail and cut it staigt down the middle ridge the details are untouched for now but i do expect some damage during the move what i dont want is to start all over from scratch again this way i can just fit the pieces back together and smooth out the areas the were cut;

Sorry for the loooong explanation but i like for the people who follow this adventure to be aware of every step in my journey, thanks to those who've been here seance the beginning once i start selling when i do ill have an offer 50% off the first person to inquire and is ready to order so if you are an impractical Mer like myself and dont care about the hazards of having one of these tails stay in touch! Cause this job will make this journeya whole lot faster !

Collecting funds for good molding materials from Smooth On is going well, also stocking up on clay for the big tail sculpt, dont know if i said beforehand but the majority of my plaster molds were shattered during the move due to horrible handling, unfortunately i was working the day of the move so i wasn't the one to transfer them... Regardless of the damage to a years worth of work im happy im super spiritual most of the time so i feel if those elements of creation were destroyed they were never there so now is a new chance to do them right;

For those following my progress I thank you and apologize for the wait but just a little longer and ill have the money to buy everything at once and finish, im doing it this way cause previously i was creating and buying what i needed i realized if i have all the materials available then i can just continue without having to wait for money to buy more materials.

Are you putting anything into the silicone to strengthen the tips? having such thin tips holding on the leafy bits may be easily damaged. if you can inlay some mesh fabric into the tips it would make it stronger ( like a small rolled shape- would strengthen it without changing the shape of the tip.)

Thanks a lot for the consideration Astridia but yes ill be using a type of filler that will make the silicone a lot harder than it is and both sides of the fluke will be lined with power mesh for that exact reason.

Decided to go ahead and extend the top part of the fluke cause the outer ridges ended in a 90 degree angle and i might not do it right in the tail body sculpt so i decided to sculpt part of the extended area on to the fluke sculpt.

Pics of to show how much i extended it up (this does not make the tail longer just shortens what i have to sculpt on the tail sculpt itself...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170814/1968400fa965109051d974994a3e9a49.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170814/f99c808d164595b56c43f30d8519fc3a.jpg

Another pic to show the length of the extension area from toes to fluke.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170814/1223134f4c870b5d5f44cf3bd7472104.jpg

The area still in paper will be added to the tail body sculpt.

I was going to take the day and swim but i decided to stay home and sculpt for a while so here i am in the final phase of smoothing down the sculpt cant wait to start detail work.

I remember that in the beginning i aways wanted a dragon themed tail and I've been thinking of ways to bring that back and include it into this design so watch out for new color scheme and Dragon theme

Thaks for the complements guys so I've sculpted six belly scales in total and seance those take up the space of my kitchen table ill just finish those and then work of the other ten later on cause if i make more ill be forced to sculpt everything from the floor and that tends to be uncomfortable after a couple hours.

So heres where im at with the Dragon belly scales and ill post pics of the fluke once i finish smoothing the lines so stay tuned!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170826/ab04ebd21b80dcb2bd5514d95dbd990d.jpg

Mortimer, I don't know if it'll help, but I transport mine in a canvas "Christmas tree tote" with wheels I custom cut a sheet of 1/2in play for support and keeping the tail from dragging. There's enough extra room that you could probably do it with an extended tail.

I bought the lexan but have no power cutting tools so playing it safe and saving it for my next refined extended tail this is a prototype, I recycled an old rapid which is cut to shape.

I wanted to sculpt then cast the tails but I need more exp points for that so I will build up to the desired thickness up layering silicone, afterwards I’ll scale the tail and add fins .
I’ve set the dead line date on the current tail I’m making to 2https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180814/84791ccb09affe681f6744582025e1b0.jpg weeks from now so after I finish my attention falls back here

OMG, I can’t believe I’ve never seen this! It’s beautiful! A successful extended tail, and its for sale on their website!

It’s in French, it says that the fluke is translucent, the heels are perfectly hidden, the tail is actually completely silicone, no fabric whatsoever:
http://www.creation-sirene.sitew.com/#_Long_Fish_.A

It’s €3990/$4642 but the site says you do need to physically visit their workshop so they can mold you and get a perfect fit.

Anyone up for a trip to Toulouse, France?

Yep, it does look good, the fluke is very thin which makes sense otherwise you wouldn't be moving at all. its a good tail for pools but not so much in open water and currents.

It’s filling out nicely, I’m using caulk to fill it up to shape, if you notice the triangle forming that will be the foot plate seance the prototype extending piece is an old rapid I avoid the tail having the “L” shape that is caused by the natural curve at the ankles I counter it with the triangle and the tail continues parallel with my knees down to the fluke. Hope it makes sense https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181005/ca5244437544bc54ad15e03fb591371c.jpg

Yes I’m just doing this first because I’m not making this first one with polycarbonate like I planned so I gotta get that triangle to keep the line I’m still waiting on the silicone to fully harden so that I can add the piece of silicone I sculpted onto my feet tape dummies so that the foot pocket is perfect size for me after that’s glued I’ll wrap the whole thing in powermesh sleeve that is also the first layer of the tail skin then encase the entire thing in silicone at this point the leg tape dummy and feet dummy are inside and I’m covering the entire thing in layers on layers on layers of silicone to build up the thickness to resemble Mako tails from latest seasons. I’m basing the thickness on their concept art found on goodle pic below for reference https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181207/bc96b21fa315deafaafe3c54832dd0d8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181207/2a8afc5a56a5d647f05ecf57d00ba004.jpg

I had it basically finished but used caulk to build up the thickness cause y'all know I want a thick tail but that approach failed.
Take note caulk users!
Caulk is great for tails but only on top of a layer of neoprene and it can't be cast scales it has to be the type of scales that are made with a spoon. If y'all look on YouTube for diy tails you'll see what I mean by that, caulk rips the thicker the more it'll rip it's not meant to be stretched or flexed.
The sides of my tail ripped in a single line as the tail was empty and fell in on itself the pressure ripped down the sides like a knife, and the ankle ended up not being able to pass my feet while one was in there so I've scrapped it, because throwing it away isn't an option.

So I hope this works! I've been trying to update this for a while but can't find the right cropping app for my pic size.
Extended tail is nearest to complete then ever! I WILL swim in it this summer!
Extension and fluke are connected, working on the thickness at the moment.
Below are links to Pinterest board that I use to collect all my fishy inspiration, I posted the pictures of the tail on there because I can't post them directly here.
Thanks guys for all the advice over the years this place is like an Emerald Tablet

It’s happening guys!
I’m almost done!
First test swim tomorrow before I add the scales and fins, at this stage I can still do editing if I need to so taking her out to the river tomorrow and seeing how it swims. Here are some progress pics of the tail and of the tail while I have it on, to show the “””heel-less” effect i achieved.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200703/b5a3915291a2161395135374777707cc.jpg

Not sure if I can up load video here but I will try.

Point is the tail works PERFECTLY as seen in the video now to add the finishing touches....
This “SLOW EXTENDED TAIL MAKIMG JOURNEY” is almost at a close. These last few years have thought me a great deal and I hope that of us here from the beginning learned just as much as I by reading my updates!

Doesn’t just look like it it WORKS PERFECT.
It’s the best extended tail I’ve seen since H2O and Mako tails. And not just because I made it [emoji23] well maby a little. But it will be proven once it’s finished and it surpasses even the mako tails. And that is the ultimate truth.

Wow!!! It's swimmable and works great! I can't wait to see more footage of it--looks like it moves rather smoothly. Do you feel fast?

At the end of the test video I did a little sprint towards the cámara and acted like I ate it . That’s fast I’m not sure if u can tell the distance between my starting point and the rocks but if you watch the footage again you can see the speed and that wasn’t me going all out I was just testing how I can turn and how it feels.

It swims great and I found that after 3 kicks in a straight line I gain lots of speed. I also noticed it shortened my breath hold just a bit but I can attribute that to the fact that I had to hike to get to the river with this really heavy tail [emoji23]

The extension does most of the work then I’m kicking downwards because the angle I made it is counter so the silicone always wants to go back to its resting place thus pushing the water while I’m kicking so the tail helps me swim two but that bounce back I just mentioned i noticed when doing strong kicks that cause the tail to bent then it bounced back to original shape to bend and bounce back. Idk if this explanation makes sense but it’s how I visualized it.

I am now in the process of finishing 2 commission tails and tops. But I work on my tail in between, soon I’ll have underwater videos and pictures for everyone with the finished tail cause it’s just neoprene for now lol [emoji23].

Ooo! Big scales!

Not many tail makers do big scales, and looking at it here, they do look really nice! A proper grown up tail instead of the mini baby scales that everyone does.

[emoji3059] Thank you Jaffa.
I love the Asia arrowana fish and these scales are an attempt at that, plus I use individual scales image usin baby scales on this huge extended tail [emoji33][emoji33][emoji33] it would take me forever just to scale it.
I have four sizes of this scale type for seamless pattern and because they should be smaller towards waist line as those are “new growth”.

I’m looking forward to sharing more with you all in the coming weeks.

* Disclaimer * I will most likely will not be adding my markings to this tail as it is the prototype, I plan on a nice blue coloration.
Like the mako mermen tail just blues.
