TAMW you're putting on your tail poolside and the lifeguard walks past, you smile at him but he refuses to look at you, instead one can hear him muttering "mermaid"!

this, all of this

I've thought about finding someone who could do a face sized shell in silicone (think about how heavy a real shell in our sizes would be!)

I saw a drawing of a curvy mer with jellyfish on her chest and it looked pretty cool, and in response to 'don't they sting you?' you can say 'does the anemone sting the clownfish?' and that'll explain everything to the littles :)

TAWM when a kid asks you why you have a necklace of scales (OMG still loving them, Pearlie!) and your oldest child pops his hip out and says "because my mum is a mermaid"

TAMW one takes her tail off in the pool so she can go outside for a snack.
TAMW does not know what to do with her legs... What I thought, "Do I kick? Why I'm not staying afloat??"
TAMW one has to do a half arsed doggy paddle 30 cm to the pool ladder.

It was really a short distance and yet it was like I completely forgot how to swim without a tail!

That awkward moment when your parents introduce you to people as "our daughter the mermaid." Or even more awkward, when your parents have already told them you are a mermaid and you later meet them and they first thing they say is, "Oh you're the mermaid! Nice to meet you."

Today my dad and I went to a little hole in the wall chinese food place he and my mom like that is owned by a lady with two little daughters. Since it's MLK Jr day they had off from school and were at the restaurant, so my dad introduced me. Coincidentally I was wearing my whale fin necklace, so the eldest asked me if I was wearing that because I'm a mermaid...which I was.

That actually reminds me of a sad story from an early-90s issue of DRAGON magazine: a mermaid falls in love with a sailor and thus intentionally approaches and is caught in his nets, he enlists the help of a witch to turn the mermaid human, hostile sailors threaten the mermaid, and she jumps into the water to escape and promptly drowns because she can't swim without a tail!

Surgeon General's Warning: Those who live a mermaid's double-life should make ample use of both legs and tail, so as not to forget how to use any of them!

TAMW you are swimming in your tail happily in a quiet pool then a load of school children come in and spot you, according to one boy I quote, 'You will die if you swim with jellyfish.' :/ So maybe he was psychic and I should never go near a jellyfish again, that said he also told me I could swim with sharks and be fine. I got a lot of are you a real mermaid? I of course said yes but then I had to wait until they had left before taking my tail off :)

I had an awkward moment when I went swimming in my monofin for the first time Friday...

That awkward moment when you are having fun swimming in your monofin, and you pause by the side of the pool to catch your breath before swimming to the other side again. Then all of a sudden a guy standing by the other lane turns and says, "Wow, you are like a fish!" Me: "Haha yep..."
Guy: "Yeah or like...a whale! *smiles happily*"
Me: "Haha uh yeah... :sweat drop: "

He wasn't trying to be a jerk or anything. I think he just didn't pick the right sea creature to compare me to. He should have said dolphin. Haha oh well I thought it was very funny, but awkward because I didn't expect him to say that.

MermaidMichelle

Depending on the nature of the joke (such as their asking if you are a real mermaid, saying your secret is out, speaking of your fishy friends, etc.) one way to reverse it is to receive the jokes with concerned seriousness, as though their suggestions are all true. Their reactions should be worthy of a laugh, and if they think you're crazy, the joke's on them!

(It is sort of like the person who enters a building full of people they don't know and asks, "What year is it?"
When the person receives an answer, s/he shouts (in their best Dr. Emmett Brown from Back to the Future impression), "It worked!" Then s/he runs away, leaving the former audience to wonder what just happened. :jawdrop::crazy::eyepop::eye twitch::thinks::lol ^:

(Bonus points to the person if s/he is dressed outlandishly or in period attire (perhaps a la H.G. Wells' Time Traveler from the Victorian era))

(Quadruple bonus points if two people do it, with one dressed as Dr. Who, and only his companion acts amazed)

Oh. I've been swim testing different bras and sports tops with my Fin Fun tankinis.

Today, I wore a purple tankini from Kmart and over it, I wore my purple Fin Fun tankini. I wanted sturdier boob cups than the regular ones in the Fin Fun tankinis.

I must be an odd bod as the next size down, the tankini fits perfectly except there is less material around the boobs. The next size up fits but is not tight and just a little baggy... I figured I would just sew in a suitable bra or sports top so it feels more snug.

I would have schooled her so much
It was an older gentleman. I was a little dumbfounded so I think I stammered out something about people typically doing it because of a deep love for the sea and swimming so its still special even there were more people doing it. Later I had the thought that Im wearing a little finfun that says mermaid on it and youre wearing goggles, what was your first clue. Honestly after saying something awkwardly I waited for him to stop talking so I could finish my practice and leave. Besides even if it did magically get 'more popular' who cares? Id love to see the local pool overtaken by mers.

TAMW I'm talking to a friend in the local wally world, and she said "I never figured out how to move with a monofin on."
And my inner mermaid took FULL CONTROL
and I started to "DRY SWIM" (doing the motions of swimming without the water)
And I finally realized why everyone stopped what they were doing to watch...
I WAS ESSENTIALLY DRY HUMPING POTATOES.
I proceeded to buy said potatoes, because I essentially tainted them...

Yep luckily I'm pretty quick with witty replies, when she asked that the girls looked at me getting all sad and I said "well magic of course! How else could I grow a tail like that? If it was a costume why isn't there a zipper?!" That seemed to satisfy them enough, but for some reason my grandma kept asking questions like "well how do you wash the costume?", it was almost like she wanted them to know I was "fake"... which I don't think was the case, my grandma is just not very bright and doesn't realize I'm posing as a REAL mermaid for kids parties, after all who would hire someone to pretend to be a fake mermaid? Mermaid Alea

Do you take the antibiotics after you have just eaten? Sometimes if I take certain medicine (such as ibuprofen) and I haven't eaten yet or it was a while since I last ate, I get really queasy feeling. You don't have to have a full meal normally I can just eat a cookie or some string cheese and then that is enough to not make me feel sick.

It doesn't seem to matter whether I take the ABs with food or not, I always get nauseous. Of course, I've been nauseous every morning for weeks anyway (no idea why, definitely not preggers) so I just take it with breakfast and get all the nausea out of the way in one fell swoop.

Your dog... is interesting. Why ice cubes? Does he know your tail needs water, and this is the best he can do without thumbs?

Mermaid Alea
03-17-2015, 11:26 AM
Our dog just really likes to play with ice. When someone gets ice water and she hears you using the ice maker she comes running to get an ice cube. I think when I was working on my tail she wanted attention and she wanted me to throw the ice for her which is what I usually do. That or make it skid across the floor for her to chase. She taps the ice with her paws like a cat it is really cute!

Our dog does the same thing!!! Just be careful in the summer or if she's really hot because ice is really dangerous for dogs when they're hot.

I have never heard that before. We give the dog ice when she is panting and hot she loves it and has never had any issue. I googled just to see and I found this: http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/truth-ice-water-dogs/story?id=24231633

Are they touching because they want to see what Salty Bob feels like or are they just touching boobs for the sake of touching boobs. Some kids there are no boundaries. I used to work in childcare and there were always a couple of kids (aged around 3-5) would be pulling the front of your shirt open to have a look or just out right grabbing them.

You just kinda remove the hands and say it's not polite. I used to ask them would they like it if I stuck my fingers up there nose, and they usually got the idea. If you freak out about it or panic, they're going to think it's funny and try and do it again.

Well, I think I had my most awkward mermaid moment ever yesterday. I'm in the process of making my own tail, and I made a mold of the fluke (tail fin) this week and spent the last 2 days scraping clay out. The last little bits of this clay break up really well in hot water with a bit of dish soap and scrubbing. Unfortunately, this fin is so big (the total footprint is about 36"x48" [91.5x122cm]) that I can't really get more than a piece of it into the kitchen sink.

So I have to put it in the shower. It barely fits. And I have to get in there with it.

Cut to me in my bikini, wearing yellow rubber gloves and water shoes (because to dissolve the clay, the water has to be hot enough to burn my skin), on my hands and knees in the shower, alternating between a toothbrush and a scrubby brush, scrubbing away at a mermaid fin that's basically my size.

I'm really glad my husband wasn't home to see that, because he would have taken pictures, and then I would have had to murder him.

Welp, guess if this mermaid thing doesn't work out I could always get a job on a whaling vessel! (Just kidding, I would never ever do that. Even legal whale hunting makes me extremely sad.)

I have literally poured blood, sweat, and tears into this tail and I haven't even started casting the silicone yet. But each step I take towards completion makes it feel more mine. More "me." It's really weird how connected I feel to this tail already. The first time I swam in a monofin, it felt so natural it was like I was born for it. I can only imagine how amazing it will feel to take my first swim as a mermaid.

That awkward moment when I went into Home Depot to get a utility wagon for myself to be transported through the con hall and I'm describing what I'm trying to use the wagon for...

Me: "Yeah, I need it to be sturdy enough to ... hold a human. Namely me. Don't ask questions.

TAMW while doing a photoshoot on a beach as an evil/dark mermaid a little girl comes running up to you shouting "you're the prettiest mermaid princess I've ever seen" and you smile but you're thinking "wait no you should be scared of me I mean look at me and my claws!" I was pretty intimidating looking but apparently she didn't think so haha!
