Can I get you guys' opinion? I typically wear a pendant style necklace when I swim in my tail, my favorite being a large black opal on a leather cord. I recently bought this necklace because it looks like abstract coral to me and the gold brings out some of the highlights in my scales. Is this too girlie???

Dude no, that's super manly! I love it! If it was a little smaller and daintier it would read as feminine but the size and all the angles make it very masculine.

Hi Nerissa! I like things that look bold and masculine. Perhaps something that incorporates shark's teeth and abalone into a necklace, forehead circlet or arm band/bracelet that fits at the bicep. I have thought about some kind of mer-armor but that could be tricky in the water! I can just imagine donning something "manly and steel" and promptly sinking to the bottom of the ocean lol

Then again, I'm REALLY tough on all of my mermaiding stuff (I like to swim fast, that's what makes me a good tester for new jewelry and accessories that people make.) So be sure to have needle nose pliers handy just in case.

Not the same piece, Mer-Crazy. This is gold overlay on silver and unfortunately cost a bit more than 10 bucks! lol It won't turn in the water or leave a mark around my neck. It's actually a heavy piece of jewelry. I almost wish I knew there was a cheap version just to see how well it holds up in salt water and save myself a lot of money!

Unfortunately, those cheap versions oxidize in salt water because it's not real silver or gold...not to mention they can turn your skin green where they rub. Probably great for land gigs though.

coat it in clear nail polish and you won't have a problem.

Recently, I had bought Sugru... I used it to glue the lenses to the outside of the goggles but instead of leaving big white ovals of Sugru, I got a bowl, poured in some beads and pressed them into the goggles. Colors are darker than this, I don't know why it shows up faded.

Finished my first mermaid hair clip :D This bugger is heavy but luckily it seems to stay okay in my thick hair, and should stay fine in water too. Learnt a few lessons along the way, including to not bother with some all-plastic hair barrettes I found (they are too fragile).

Thank you! Yes, all hand painted. The gradient took forever (sooo much mixing and blending), but worth it! The starfish are molded polymer clay, so they are water safe :)

I've seen them for sale on Etsy, but they're pretty expensive there. They're made in China, and I used to live in China, so I had a friend bring me one when he came to visit(yay, no shipping!) because they cost a few dollars in the shops there if you know where to look(but shipping can kill you). I think if you searched on alibaba or sites like that you could find them for a reasonable price, or something very similar(but once again, be careful of shipping, lots of Chinese sellers charge .99 for the item and $25 for the shipping).

Coating them thoroughly in resin is your best bet, but there's no guarantee that that will work- they may still rot anyhow. Usually real starfish are for dry only accessories.

(This was a pain in the butt to drill by hand) It's got a round mirror hot glued on, and there are a couple of fake flat-backed mini pearls inlaid with the glue :) the back- 32582 and the front-

I used what's called a 'bead reamer', and found a thick part to hand drill. Ya gotta be careful ^.^ I've drilled shells with a pair of scissors before lol.

You could also use a dremel with a fine bit. Just be careful when drilling shells as the DUST CAN BE TOXIC. Many people suggest drilling the shell while it's submerged in water or wearing breathing masks. Abalone shells are especially notorious.

I'm always happy to tell you guys my jewellery techniques, Sienna Star, especially since it's so difficult to drill shells without breaking them normally. The tool I use is really good, because in terms of handling it's easy. Plus I'm fairly sure the kit was under $25 :) Merfolk help each other and stick together :)

Yep, I used these candles (Normal white ones and scented red ones):

Took the wicks out:

Glued them onto the middle of the shell.
Melted the wax, mixed some colors-shades and poured it in the shells.
Let it set and voilá; you have Shell Candles!

I know it's not much but I made a few starfish, barnacles, shells, sea urchin bits and stuff to stick on my face. This one is glow in the dark but Pros-Aide Adhesive, which is like a medical one doesn't come off in water!!!! I know because I had painted part of myself in a mixture of the stuff and body paint to make it last longer and it took 3 showers and a ton of scrubbing to get it off (it hurt a little) as I didn't have the removal stuff.

Hi I do a bit of wire work so thought I'd answer your questions :)
For the armlet and circlet and similar pieces you just need some nice thicker wire that can hold its shape. Then you bend it to your design using pliers or your hands if it's soft enough...

Also, if you look on google and type in DIY wire wrapping a lot of instructions pop up on how to wire wrap jewelry, i think youtube even has video's with instructions on it :-)

I just saw that same mirror at my local dollar tree! I thought of getting one just to make another mermaid mirror.

That's where I got it! It's a beautiful mirror for $1. I actually got two! I was going to make a Lapis Lazuli mirror (su) with the other one, but as of now, I have decided to leave it alone

I made this seashell headdress today it kind of reminds me of a mermaid who got stuck in a net and a little piece was still stuck to her head when she got out and a bunch of seashells and starfish got caught on it. It covers my whole head and I love it!
