Anyway, there is a thread for actual tails...so why isn't there one for tail designs? I love to look at everyone else's tail designs, so it seems logical to have an actual thread to look through! :p Anyway, I still haven't figured Mernetwork out (blah!) and haven't figured out how to get my pictures to show up directly in the post. My photobucket album, though, is here. (http://s1124.beta.photobucket.com/user/ZeezZeez/library/Tails)

Personally, I like these two of mine. Does anyone else know of any other tails similar to these at all? I ask because I really don't know how it would look as a tail, and I'm super curious. http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l571/ZeezZeez/Tails/PICTURE1.jpg

Oh I love those designs! Really pretty :) Do you have any tails you plan on ordering in the future based off of those? And I would post my latest design... but it's super special and wouldn't want anyone taking it before I actually have it :)

Hehe, I totally understand! That one I posted is pretty much the only one I've worked on for weeks that I've really, genuinely liked. Pink is my favorite color, but I want it to kind of be realistic and blend into the ocean well...I'm still not sure. Right now, my family has zero money (who really does right now? =\) so my main dream is to save up for a Merbellas by the time I'm in college. I'd like to probably try a Fish-Butt before then, though.

I draw out one side, put another piece of paper on top of the sketch, scribble all over the area of the sketch hard, take off the paper, line it up with the existing side and trace the faint original sketch. The real trick is lining it up before you trace it.

I just eyeball it usually. (It helps to lean back from the drawings and twist your head to the side a bit to see the drawing in a new way.)

Impromptu tail design, done at 10pm last night.
Fabric tail design, rapid or wave monofin shape, large hip fins, peek-a-boo cut-out scales, over the bust, etc.
based off of the red velvet fish I saw on tv.
Sorry it's so huge, I resized it twice...
Also, FREE TO USE. Just tell people where you found it.

I don't have any solid planning pictures yet, but since I have to take in my mertailor tail, and add on an extension I am going to be adding chiffon along the sides like side fins. I really want to do all 4 colors that are in my tail (black, gold, red, white) but I'm not sure how I'm going to accomplish it yet. Either in different layers or painting the chiffon.

I don't get to even think about ordering it until we find out how much we could be getting from the thing with the people and the stuff, which will probably be in the fall. I won't have it by pirate-fest, but it'll be worth it, in the end.

Mermaid Dottie

Either FinFolk or mernation, but I'm leaning towards the latter, because of how great they've been to talk to the last couple of days.

MerEmma
07-07-2013, 12:26 AM
Hm...both of their flukes are more vein-y, which would look amazing with your design, for sure, especially if the thicker veins (lol, I don't know of a better term :P) weren't black...ah, I can see that working very well with Mernation's fluke, I think :)

If you do a Google image searchfor Mertailor tails his templates show up for the different fluke styles. If you click on them it takes you straight to his website. For the life of me I can't figure out how to access them directly by going to his website, so I just go the Google image route.

Thanks. I like it, too. Great for somebody in the Rocky Mountain Pod who might want to look dangerous.
I'm not a pink person, either, but there is a character I want to cosplay as, and she is COMPLETELY pink in one of her skins. The other skin shows too much cleavage, imo.
I like the Merman design. Great colors.
I have a design I like a lot, as well, (again, pink, but still cool) but I don't want to share it because its soooooooo different. So much so, that I would have to make it myself. Which I just might do.

I've read some mers totally are not pink people, then they find a pink fabric and it just calls to them. Haha If it has inspired you, go for it. I don't like blue on myself, and I usually avoid it as a main colour, but my roommate convinced me to get this blue dress and I have yet to find someone who doesn't love it one me. Go figure. I also have a blue (ish) personal design that has 15 extra fins, but I'm hiding it until it can be made. :-P

Also, Dottie, you are one of the winners.

So, the other day, when Hubby and I were moonlight-swimming (first time we'd swam together without the baby, me in tail) he thought it would be fun to hug me as we swam underwater. 0.o
Didn't work the way he thought.
So he said "That'll be way easier when I have a tail."
When? He said 'When'? I checked my hearing. Yep he'd said 'when'. So now I'm working on Merman Designs like crazy!
I'm doing it sort of like that Neptune's Daughter game.

I don't appreciate cussing, sir. If you don't like it, you could be a little more polite about it, and leave out the crude language. And, I was actually going for beefy pecs, like in your picture.
Please also keep in mind, that there is no shading or color yet at all.
I do appreciate the critique, though, and will attempt to make something more... masculine.

EDIT:Actually, no. No, I won't try again. I spent hours on that, looking at different models, and getting every line just right.

Dottie,
I loved your tail designs. That's so exciting! I wish you the best of luck.
Sharks, dolphins, and whales are fairly smooth ('cept some bumpy whales)
...Does the tails texture require much thought as well?
I mostly only see Super scaley type tails. Just curious! ('Personally like the shark concept the best!)

Caltuna,
The upper fin on it's back it so pretty. I'm a sucker for fins with dark edges.
I have no idea what 'lexan' fins are XD;

Thanks,Lyretail (do you actually play the lyre? :) ). I'll probably go with bumps on the whale, smooth on the Dolphin, and stippled/rough on the shark.
Have you ever played the Doll Divine game (http://www.dolldivine.com/neptunes-daughter-mermaid-dress-up.php)? I want to have similar options to that, though probably not as many, since my creative juices sometimes run dry before I'm done.

The Wraith Mermaid, sometimes referred to as Wraithmaids, were considered an ill omen by sailors of the Great Lakes. Given their ghostly-white bodies and solid black eyes, many believed them to be the spirits of women lost at sea, or widows searching for their drowned sailors. Wraithmaids travel in groups of 3 to 9, and they search out sunken vessels to live in. Their tattered fins are a result of jagged edges and hazards that come with navigating a ruined ship. They stay in the freezing waters of Superior, Huron, Michigan and Ontario because the freshwater and cold temperatures preserve the wrecks far longer than seawater.

Some wraiths can live hundreds of years in the Great Lakes, surfacing only during fierce storms. They can sense a dying ship and will circle it for hours, waiting for the decent of their new home. Any sailor who caught sight of a wraith knew his struggling vessel was doomed.

Cheshkitten: OMG that's an awesome design! I like the first, I also think the second one might be a bit too busy on a mer... Here's the general design for my first tail, made of fabric found around the house. The dorsal fin will be much smaller, as I have limited fabric/ample dorsal area. I'm debating as to whether glow-in-the-dark fabric paint on stretch velvet is a good idea...

13185

Anahita
08-03-2013, 06:10 AM
I've never had much luck painting on velvet. I imagine stretch would be even worse to handle.... Maybe you can paint the glow-in-the-dark stuff on sequins and then tack then down to the velvet after?

Miyu
08-03-2013, 08:41 AM
I was thinking of adding some sequins when i can get some, I thought it would look spectacular with some sequin scales scattered here and there! As for the paint, I was mostly thinking of paint along the side seams. Maybe side fringe + paint, since it won't need to stretch as much? I've never painted fabric before -_-;

As I was going to realistic, the bass has two fins down it's back so instead of ankle fins I put the second fin on the back of the calves. It's only a concept but it is as accurate as I was going to get.

Soulstrifer
08-06-2013, 02:04 PM
It's going to be used to support and educate people at the local lakes about Bass and their importance to the lake ecosystem and that taking the fat, egg heavy females around spawn hurts the population. Basically I will be using it to try and convert meat fisherman into recreational fisherman and those who still want to eat them ... then take some of the smaller ones and let the big ones go. For that reason I want the tail itself to be a accurate as possible... I myself would much rather have small ankle fins than the Soft rays Dorsal ... I had to leave out what would be the anal fin because it looked stupid... I might not add that second dorsal on when I get down to actually making it though.

Here is the finished design for the Largmouth -Black- Bass
I know this one isn't really flashy but I am going for a realistic look and not fantasy appearance.

Looks just like the bass I used to catch! :-D Very well done! (I always catch and release.)

I think you might be able to get away with moving the 2nd soft ray dorsal to a more heel fin spot and maybe have it as a bit smaller? So you still have the "feel" of that fin, it just "fits" a mermaid better. Hope that helps?

It's a killer design and I cannot wait to see it real! Love what you're using it for! Best of luck! ^_^

With full support of my fiancee <3 who is gung ho for the idea of me making a mertail -which kind of both surprised me and didn't surprise me at the same time. I will be picking up my mono fin while I'm down in South Padre :D So I should be able to start my scale board and hopefully fluke sculpt soon

I am waiting on an old version of PaintShopPro to download to colour it in, But I used DollDevine to do a white Blank tail worn by me.

I had too much fun doing this, I probably won't order matching arm-warmers or make gauze cap sleeves, But I am saving up to order a partial silicone tail from Shelly, hopefully this year.

So I've been having a lot of fun coming up with the stuff below. Since finding the Merbella Studios template, I went about doctoring the fluke, and coming up with the designs and colorations below.

1398013981
1398213983

Down the line, I redrew the tail entirely and altered the template to indicate the semi-transluscency I want to achieve. Everything below I took with my phone off screen. Naturally, I started out with an approachable design. I felt it was kinda befitting to my race.

1398413985

And then for giggles, I hit the invert button. What resulted (and what is one of my favorites) has a nice Baltimore Ravens theme. And also has a nice color scheme. I'm partial to the whole nighttime dusky palette.

1398613987

Then I tried this, which screams Chinese regal. I like this a lot too...though if I go with this I'm not so sure I want to be called "that Chinese mermaid" when people already think I'm Chinese :p It would be more fitting than the Koi concept, though.

1398813989

Then I tried a green version of it — my favorite color — but I'm kinda meh on it.

13990

Some time later I looked to other inspiration. Butterflies. Lizards. Peacocks. Tropical birds. Frogs. The concepts below are my attempt at Poison Dart Frog patterning. Frankly they scream "mermaid on acid trip meets art school dropout" to me.

1399213993139941399513996

And then I tried a few, a little less crazy color schemes with metallic scale patterning.

1399813999140001400114002

This is what I got so far. In terms of mer-persona, I want to convey a sense of exotic mystique. Something beautiful and fierce. I see this "character" with metallic claws, a net-like holster that hides a dagger or a pair of sai, and either a trident or javelin. When not armed and dangerous, I see this character hanging around at dusk or nightfall. I can even see her racing with other mermaids or creatures.

I do have more ideas here and there; just want to exhaust all possible options by the time I have the means, and availability with Merbellas, to make ONE of these tails a reality. What do you think could work?

OMG Daphne, I love them. LOTS OF TAIL DESIGNS! So, lots of opinions, LOL

Tribal Tails: I love them! I really really like the tribal tattoo design! My man has tribal face tattoos, so I always think they're awesome. I want to say I like the purple one more, but the gold one is also so lovely, I can't choose! I really like the fluke design.

Koi: OMG LOVE. I especially like your ideas for the light one, but the inverted one is also sooo cool! Wouldn't it be neat to have both, and switch back and forth like an Odette/Odile sort of thing? :P The red one is pretty as well, but I like the first two best. *squints to try and read print on there*

Acid trip tails: I especially love the first and last ones, those are just so cool and trippy heehee :D

Wow, Daphne! That first one! I'm in love! And the Chinese Regal one and the patterns on the "acid" ones are so cool! The first purple acid one is a beautiful color scheme.

So this got my attention, if it's not rude to ask, what ethnicity are you? I'm curious because me, personally, I'm TOTALLY exploiting my own ethnicity for my mersona. We've got really cool fish where I come from (and really awesome marine mammals too, so yeah, I can't help but steal designs from them and mash them up into a tail :D )

Anahita, ethnicity wise I'm Filipino. Heh, just today I was at the mall and some old guy started speaking Chinese to me. Then Japanese. Then possibly Thai or Korean. I'm like...no...
None of the above. :p if I charged people every time someone assumed I'm Chinese, I'd have enough money to fund a tail. They crack me up.

Anyhoo, what kind of fish and mammals are you referring to? I had another derp moment posting a reply from my intro thread that should have been here. Basically I had this idea of taking the characters in your name and applying it vertically on a tail, opposite some colors I've yet to figure out. The type becomes a pattern. I want to also try some other characters and see how they play out. I'm open to new fluke options too. Just tough trying to work around that monofin.

PearlieMae, can't wait to see the clear(er) options. It must be a challenge getting the materials to work in that way. Nice pun there too.

Just typical reef fish and mammals; some endemic to the Persian Gulf, some in the whole area. But the colors on them are wild, which is why I don't have any problem sticking to my own region for inspiration :)

This is roughly what I'm thinking of. I'm having a stubborn time trying to make the kanji gold, but you see how I took them and wrapped them along one side of it. Arabic calligraphy (if that's what it is) is so gorgeous as a letterform; it really got me hooked on the idea of drawing from calligraphy to make unique patterns.

I wanna explore this more. Such a shame Tagalog doesn't have a nice visual letterforms the way the mainland Asian languages and the Russian language do. I think if I can sort this out and incorporate it into one of the concepts above, I just might have my tail.

The internets tell me these kanji are "Feminine", "Elegant," Desire", and "Dream." They way they're arranged, they might say something awkward or vulgar. Or monkey butt. Who knows.

It'd be amusing and stupid going around with a cool tail that said monkey butt on it.

Oooooo but Tagalog has Baybayin (I think that's how it's spelled?) which I know is a hassle, to learn a whole archaic writing system for a tail, but it's a lot better than using symbols from a language that's easy to mess up in. I saw someone do that with a tattoo in Persian. They wanted to say something all deep and meaningful, and instead it made no sense, and had a really, REALLY bad swearword in it. It's rare to see it in Farsi because very few people get tattoos in Farsi (thank god!), BUT loads of people get Chinese character tatts, and according to this article (http://mentalfloss.com/article/20756/tattoo-doesnt-mean-what-you-think-it-means), it seems that it can end pretty badly.... I feel so bad for those people!

Daphne

08-28-2013, 12:30 AM
Haha, no problem :) I actually only knew about it because someone accidentally confused it for something a pre-Islamic Persian script and asked me to translate it for them. I had to figure out what it was so I didn't feel bad telling them "No, I can't" and so I came across Baybayin. :) It's pretty cool looking, and I can definitely see how with it's pretty loops how it got confused for middle Persian.

Daphne
08-29-2013, 10:48 PM
I found and reached out to a Filipino artist that specializes in Baybayin tattoo art. He's yet to get back to me. I hope he gets back to me. Either way, I'm still stoked about this discovery. When I get around to rolling credits for this thing, you're getting a nod. And him. If he gets back to me. Preferably soon. I'm too excited to be patient.

For now the kanji is placeholder. I think I've settled on a general design (below), just need his translation(s), and a final color scheme. If I were to post every single color variation of this thing I'd have another ginormo post like my initial one. So I'm putting up one of my preferences. I'm still stubborn about putting some olive green in there, or earth tones maybe, or have some bold, jewel-toned tropical OMG my eyes tropical colors, or bold Jamaicanesque colors — which would be gorgeous on dark skin IMO. But that's not quite me. I could post them anyway if someone would be interested in that kind of palette for a tail.

Daphne: My guy really likes the "tribal tattoo" one, I'd love to make it out of fabric/neoprene and paint that for him! Although, he has tribal tattoos of his own design already on his body, so I'd like to try to incorporate his style more so it "blends in" more. I think he also wants to elongate the "sides" of the fluke to look a little more spiky and "masculine" I suppose  But he adores the colour scheme, that's right up his alley! (Although I may try to get him to have pink tips LOL - one time when he had double mohawks, they were dyed purple-blue, and I convinced him to let me do just the tips hot pink, and it was so awesome, and EVERYONE loved it!)

So just had an idea. A few days ago I discovered I had EVEN MORE tail color and tail design concepts. Rather than spam the thread, I was thinking of doing an album here called "laurelsky InspiraSEA: a conceptual lookbook. Laurelsky is my handle as a freelancer, basically a play on my name.

It will have all these tail designs and the unposted concepts. It'll also have other things like various fin, fluke and dorsal designs, I was also thinking of possible tops, accessories and props for both men and women. There's also stuff I was thinking about for eye makeup, hairstyles, etc.

I've been SO much more inspired since coming here. I love doing comic art and fashion illustration, what better way to regain momentum into making IPs again. And if anyone wants to produce them, apply them, print them out even, you're free to. Just credit me with the concepts. Or I will be sad panda.

And then have to go maul something.

Edited to add the four more tails I had buried in layers within my file. Subsequent tails and other concepts will be placed into the album, at which point all concepts I posted here will be stripped from my posts and redirected to the album to ensure security.

@Moonlight: maybe if you go on the fuschia or a darker, redder pink, it could still be masculine. I can see hot pink working too. Heh, maybe a hot pink lightning pattern even.

You could probably open up a new album on your profile to do that. Then you can organize everything and use the privacy settings to make sure only members of the network can see your designs, that way there's less of a chance of the designs being taken and your work going uncredited.

I'm making a tigerfish tail for my first tail! Because the design I drew was AMA-ZING! (More amazing then the shark one I was going to make first.) But the colors I kind of dulled because I can't scan the picture on to the computer yet. Green, silver, BRIGHT orange-yellow, baby pink and white are all on the tail. XD
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k631/Alison_Bowker/mms_img-10863084_zpsf3cbdb76.jpg

Then there is my shark tail, that I'm gonna have to make sometime, I lovels it to bits and pieces, but, I'll wait on it. (And not sure if I want it solid gray, or to have a white underbelly, or if I'm going to choose a neat real-life shark design. like the brown ones with white spots and stripes.)
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k631/Alison_Bowker/mms_img-1759507887_zps5dfed829.jpg

Then there's this Angelfish tail, that, I am NOT going to make for myself, and probably won't make at all. But I do want to see it made sometime, so, you know, if someone wants to lay claim to it, they can. I don't know what colors to add though, :( it really needs something in my oppinion. Oh, if you do want it, tell me, and send me pictures once you have it and stuff.

Great concepts Meemerdd! I like the Shark Bodysuit. You could have a whole series on that alone, with all the shark types. Could also work for a Selkie option...another topic for later though.

Your tigerfish tail sounds like a Mardi Gras waiting to happen!

Since you mentioned it, I went ahead and drew out that concept for you — quick and dirty — based on what google thought angelfish were. The something (IMO) I think it needed was emphasis on the dorsal, since the kind most seen in aquariums have a crazy high dorsal, and a stringy pelvic/ventral fin. It would be gorgeous as eye candy; my only concern is that it may cause a lot of drag when swimming with it.

Then again sailfish have an even higher dorsal array, and they're among the fastest swimmers in the ocean.

Thank you! (Yep, a whole series of awesome sharks out there, and an oppratunitie for hammer head shoulder armor I shall be taking, just because that would be awesome! XD ) Bodysuits are so much better then seperate pieces too, I think, no worry about something sliding while you swim, and no more trying to figure out the "perfect top" to go with it.

Oh NO! Now I'm worried it will look super fake mardi-gras instead of a nice mermaid tail. *facedesk*

Oh my, your design is so pretty, though I agree, I think someone would have tons of trouble swimming in that, or it could make it a large deal faster. (Now I feel the need to test it out. Gah!)

Then again sailfish have an even higher dorsal array, and they're among the fastest swimmers in the ocean.
Yeah, but they don't swim up and down, they swim side to side. Dorsals that aren't small and streamlined, like a dolphin's, don't do well for the mammalian up and down style.
That being said, it'd look gorgeous! If one were just interested in graceful and beautiful movement, I think it'd do just fine.

Daphne
08-30-2013, 10:42 PM
See, I don't think Mardi Gras as fake. I personally love the jewel tones and shiny shiny (like a party in a tail). Sorry :p Think of it this way: you'll have an especially FUN and unconventional tail.

Shark hide armor....mmmmmmmm. I'm partial to armor and anything having to do with battle and fighting; hence me being really drawn to the shark concepts. Don't forget the trident when you're all done.

Meemerdd
08-30-2013, 11:00 PM
Tridents! Because fighting and fantasy just got to be combined. :D I'll have to make a trident, or at least take a old pirate sword with me, your right. (Fighting is awesome, but, most armor is way to heavy, I imagine shark skin would be like a step up from leather though.)

Daphne
08-30-2013, 11:25 PM
What fun is fantasy without a few punches and riff raff involved between ridiculously pretty people?

The most "practical" piece of armor would be sharkhide, as you've stated, and I agree. The most metal you could have on your person would be something like a chainmail shirt, but that's it. Even then it would rust and erode after a time.

My husband and I play off the Cerulean Seas campaign setting, which details other types of armor. Coral...good luck swimming in that. Jellyfish...if you want the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man look. Ice...I don't think that's very healthy or comfortable against the skin, unless you're going for the permanent out-of-body experience. Mr. Freeze was able to rock it though :P

Tridents are the defacto sea weapons most common to folks IMO. If you look in any D&D book, it should be simple creating an underwater equivalent. Cerulean Seas has a nice assortment of water weapons. Easiest one I think you could get away with is a simple exhibition bo staff. It can be easily capped/embellished with any fake bladed object. Even when stripped of it, it's still an effective defensive weapon — more so if you know and can apply the forms.

Meemerdd
08-30-2013, 11:58 PM
Those armors do not sound practical. *_* Agreed.

D&D is always my defacto source for weapon designs, they have well depictated pictures when they put the pictures in the books. What is Cerulean Seas? I must see these tridents now. O.o

Ok this should be the last series before I start that album. I haven't gotten a response to my email from the artist, so I dug around and did research myself between translating words into Tagalog (in proper context) and translating those words into the Baybayin. I got impatient :p

As I expected, it's one busy squiggly mess. So I messed around with its color and typography to get most of it legible, and keeping those words in the same pattern as the kanji were. Hopefully I'll get some proper consult from the artist if the words I'm using are contextually correct. I'm also working in two dimensions which makes concepting this particular design difficult. Wish I knew 3D so I could just skin a model, add the code and upload it as a swf you guys can actually turn 360 and rotate it, like you can on some product pages. Those parts I have done before at work.

Previewing your tail design to scale in 3D..uuuugh too smart for me but I know how to do a third of that stuff...

Anyhoo my final picks are between the green and purple ones. Green's my fave color. The purple reminds me of an aurora borealis. This is making my brain hurt :p

Nice use of patterns and color here, Soulstrifer. The tail is NOT fail; that reference you have there and your thumbnail makes sense, has clearly conveyed info and gets the feel across. That's really what matters. If this is produced this will be a very unique, very impressive tail.

So many lovely designs on here. Thought I'd add one based off the Glaucus atlanticus (aka blue sea slug), Its only half the fluke and part of the tail as I can't draw symetricalle XP. Hopefully I can make this out of neoprene as it would be a smooth design ^_^. 14555 I apologise for the colouring as they were the only similar colours I had at the time, I swear I can paint better XP. though I am contemplating fewer tentacle apendages things.
