There have been a couple threads about mermaid hair and swimming and stuff, but I'm pretty sure there isn't yet one where we can all share pics of our hair like the ones where we can share our tails or tail designs. So let's all show off our hair! Long or short, colored or embellished or not, I'm sure we all have lovely, unique mermaid hair that we can be proud of :D I've been growing my hair out for some years now, and I usually keep it braided and pinned back to keep it protected and out of the way, but sometimes I let it down to show it off a bit. Here's a quick picture I got of it yesterday. I'm pretty sure this is the longest it has ever been.

Mine looks very similar. A tad longer, less curly, and a shade lighter, I'd say.
Swimming with it is annoying though; I'm wearing caps now all the time (and my hair doesn't seem to like it :( )
I also think my natural hair colour doesn't look very aquatic, so I now use wigs and stuff which look so much better :p

Post a picture! I'm sure your hair is beautiful.
Haha my hair is not curly at all. It's actually bone straight, I'd literally just taken it out of a braid for that picture.

I wish I had hair like this! My hair just won't grow! After one year it has grown one inch O_O I have really thin hair and it splits on every 2 weeks...urgh -_-"

Ta-da! I have fairly short hair. It used to be a lot longer though, but I cut it off because I hated having long hair. My family wouldn't let me do it for the longest time. xD

That was like...two years ago? Maybe three.
In a way I kinda miss long hair but I hated the maintenance and upkeep. It looked horrid all the time unless I spent ages working with it. xD

Emma, your hair is really cute! Ariel, if you wanna grow long hair, maybe we could also turn this into a bit of a haircare tips-sharing thread? I've definitely picked up a few good ideas through my quest for butt-length hair. The main thing is to protect it. The more it gets caught or tangled in things, the more damaged and split and dried out it gets. It wasn't until I started wearing my hair in a braid all the time (which protects it from a lot of snagging and tangling and rubbing) that I started REALLY noticing a lot of hair growth. Also, don't ever ever use heat to style it! Treat it very delicately and it will reward you :) Also don't believe that old wives' tale about having to trim your hair every month or it won't grow. That's hogwash. Hair is dead tissue and chopping off the ends does nothing to stimulate the roots. I ONLY ever trim my hair when the ends have a lot of splits in them, and ONLY enough to get the most splits out. I rarely trim it more than once every several months. I also just started using only conditioner to wash my hair (no shampoo, it dries your hair out!) and it works great. My hair is really smooth and shiny. Also...pure coconut oil! Best hair moisturizer ever!

I'm going natural so i've just been wearing protective hair styles lately. My hair goes to a bit below my shoulder (i'd say almost touching my armpit)
This is the way i got my hair braided for the mermaid meet up, those little balls in the center are actually bantu knots so when i take them down, my hair will be really curly , also, it's braided in a mohawk)

I like the idea to share long hair care! Here's mine... I don't typically wash mine daily, but only when my scalp needs it. Like sweaty from riding my horses, or exercising at the gym. If I go straight to the pool after a yoga or exercise class, then I only use the shampoo for removing chlorine. I use lots of conditioner, and will put it in my hair after I wet and wring it out, then put on the conditioner, and then my Speedo swim cap. I don't want to get thrown out of the pool for leaving a trail of olive oil or conditioner on the surface. I will try to get a pix soon. Love the different hair styles, and even colors (hubby won't let me dye my hair, but I could use a wig and dye some of that!
On cuts and trims... because I don't want my hair longer than waist length and love the straight across evenness, I get mine trimmed quarterly. That's worked for me for years. Some ppl with finer hair may have to slightly trim (1/4 inch) every 2 months, but that's not a hardship. I also have the base undercut about 1/4 - 1/3 inch, so it has some ability to lay with slight curl under, and curl is barely what happens, LOL! I went to Sally's to try their Ion products for Shampoo and Conditioner. Shampoo seems to be ok, but jury is still out on the Conditioner, not sure if there is a better product out there...
Any Conditioner brand suggestions?

@ Theobromine... I love the wave, I do mine in wet braid and let it dry, comes out like yours then goes bone straight! If I let mine get much longer than just below my waist, it tangles to easy in just daily routines. I ride horses, and have to braid mine too, or wear a net to contain it. Especially in shows. And the "helmet head" sweaty hair is Ugg! So getting the sweat and oils out for me is a good thing.
@ Hales... I think mine is about like yours, Yours is so lovely in the water!
@ Draggersprez... I had my hair done in corn rows once! Hurt like crazy, but relaxed after while! I love the Mohawk Bantu knots, they really make the do!
@ MerEmma... I could only wish for beautiful curl like yours, I try and try, but the best I can do is wave, after braiding it wet, letting it dry overnite. My hair is waist length, has been for many years. I did have a Big Hair done years ago, and it stood out about 4-5 inches from my scalp with lots of hair spray! Never again! LOL

Marla, my current favorite conditioner is the Trader Joe's brand tea tree conditioner (their other conditioners are good too). It's really nice and slippery/silky, goes a long way, and isn't too expensive. Much cheaper than other nice conditioners such as what you would find at Whole Foods or something.

LOVE seeing everyone's hair :) Here's mine:
This is one where my curls are being pretty curly 11484
This one was a good hair day but more like typical...some combo of waves and curls. It hangs about mid-back level at its longest layer and down to about my tailbone when it is wet 11485
As far as managing it (since it has been suggested to put hair care info on this thread!), it is pretty dry naturally, especially the ends, so I micro-trim it often. I do a low-poo routine (very little shampoo, and what I do use has no sulfates in it) and lots of conditioner (without silicones, etc). I usually just wash with conditioner, and then put leave-in and a cream-gel or coconut oil or something in it. Then I put it up in an old t-shirt to soak up the initial water and then let it dry naturally (usually overnight). I take lots of conditioner (leave-in or anything I have around) when I go swimming and put it in after rinsing my hair (or also before swimming if going into chlorine). I also have a sun protectant spray that I use if I'm going to be out in the sun (it's hard for me to wear hats or put my hair up due to headaches).
As for brands, I go back and forth between things. I LOVE the Renpure line of conditioners but they are harder to find (they used to be at Walgreens and Winn Dixie in our neck of the woods)...but you can get them on Amazon and the like. Right now I'm using the Beautiful Curls brand for conditioner and leave-in and the Tints of Nature sun protectant spray.
Speaking of tints, I do color a little bit to my natural shade of darkish brownish auburnish...I use the Tints of Nature brand color every couple of months, just started not long ago, mostly because since my ends are dry they tend to be lighter than my roots which I personally hate (at least on me I hate it). I do have some early grays too (blargh!) which I don't really mind except that it seems to dull my hair out a little. The color is technically permanent but doesn't have any ammonias and junk so it really lasts more like a demi-permanent...just eventually fades out...which is kinda nice because I never get any funky roots before recoloring.

I once put blue streaks in my hair! But I didn't like how they looked when they faded. Then several years ago I started using pure henna to condition and tint my hair and never looked back. I love henna. I was trying to find a better picture that shows how bright it looks in the sun (and it was brighter at first; it darkens with repeated applications). But I look ginormous in all my old pictures :-/

I've been curious about using Henna, but I've never tried it. How difficult is it to use?
Theobromine
05-28-2013, 11:50 PM
Well, henna is kinda a pain in the butt, actually, but I really love the results so I think it's worth it. It's not like using normal hair dyes, because it's basically just finely ground leaves of the henna plant, which has a really high concentration of the dye molecule (lawsone). The molecule bonds permanently with the keratin in your hair which actually strengthens it, but also means that it never comes out ever!! So it is a commitment. But seriously, it's gorgeous. There's a super awesome website that explains everything in way more detail with a great ebook you can download and read all about how to use henna, and the history of henna and stuff: http://hennaforhair.com/ It's really interesting.
Theobromine
05-28-2013, 11:58 PM
Here's an old picture from when I first started using henna. My hair does not actually look this red. But when the sun hits it, it glows. It's a much brighter red at first, and the henna oxidizes over the next few days and becomes a deeper color. And the more often you use henna the deeper the stain gets, so mine is now a pretty deep auburn whereas my natural hair color was light brown. The color you get with henna depends on your starting hair color, so not everyone's results look exactly the same.

I love seeing all the colors :) I personally love blue streaks but I'm a wuss about bleaching, and using stuff like Manic Panic is a pain in the fins and doesn't get much of a result if you don't bleach first, so I resorted to using clip in extensions from Sally's...I wore them every day when I was in school a couple of years ago, and all my fellow students thought they were real (they are synthetic but I figured out how to curl them without melting them so they blend right in). They are great for mermaid dry events now :D
Theobromine
05-29-2013, 09:57 AM
Well, I used Manic Panic without bleaching my hair, and it worked and the blue showed up fine in my brown hair, but it just didn't last terribly long (except for the faint green streaks that were there for quite a while). Yeah, I would never let bleach anywhere near my hair :P

I never put on makeup. Not even for professional photos!
Firstly, I'm wet most of the time (swimming twice per day at least); secondly, I think makeup is somehow...dishonest.
While in some cases it does indeed enhance the looks, just as many people look good either way, or even better without:p

I'm lucky, the native american blood in me makes my hair grow super fast! My hair was shoulder length not too long ago, as I had cut off about a foot and a half and donated it. I guess my only advice is that you have to let the ends be split if you want it to grow. Then when its a little past your desired length, trim it and you can maintain your hair that length for a while. :)

I mean 100% no offense by my following statement:
1. Improve health
·Eat better
·Exercise more (improves blood flow)
·Make sure you're getting the essential vitamins for YOUR body
2. Fish oil can help. We recommend it for pet owners whose pets have dry, damage or patchy hair.
·It will improve your scalp health
·It may improve hair strength
3. Check your shampoo and conditioner.
·Too many chemicals can damage your hair after prolonged use.
·You may be allergic to them and not even know. (Does your scalp itch or "break out" after washing?)
·Get the right type for your hair (Don't get stuff that is for people with thick curly hair if your hair is straight and thin, vice versus.)
4. Check your family tree
·How many people in your family have long thick hair?
·How many have thin frizzy hair?
·Does someone have thin hair, but a lot if it?
·How many members have premature thinning or balding?
5. Maintainence
·Do you brush your hair from bottom to top to prevent breakage or do you just rip right through it?
·Do you have the right brush for your hair type?
·Are you using combs?
·Are you using proper care after dying it? (If applicable)
·Are you getting trims to keep your ends from splitting more?
6. Massage your scalp (I've heard this helps)
Hope that helps! Sorry it's so long!

I have tailbone length hair but it has taken me quite a few years to grow it and find the right hair products and routine that works for me. I suggest strongly that you join longhaircommunity.com, as they have all the information you could possibly want on hair and more. I lurked around there a lot for quite a number of months trying different things, including methods of washing hair that don't use shampoo (I am back to using shampoo a couple times a week now, I think my hair just likes it better and it is easier to comb through and I get less shedding when I shampoo it, so shampoo it is!). What really helped me was finding the right comb for me and just learning about my hair type and how to take care of it in general, as well as investing in a good hair vitamin and using extra virgin olive oil on the lengths and ends to moisturise them, otherwise they are nice and crispy and split a lot. The bottom half of my hair has been chemically dyed in the past. (I stopped that habit because I wanted long hair and started just using veggie dyes instead and went green, which I have to top up every two weeks) The chemically dyed hair isn't in top condition but I trim it a little once every few months and it is ok. I never thought my hair would ever grow past bra-strap length but here it is at tailbone and still growing! I have very fine, thin blonde hair a lot like yours and honestly if I can do it you can too! Good luck :)

My hair grows very slowly, so my rule number one is; don't cut it! Except for the split ends.
I cut those regularly, and by that I mean: I sort them out, hair by hair, and cut only split ends :p
Depending how bad the split is, that may take a few hours lol.
Don't wash your hair too often (stress for the hair), don't blowdry it ever if you can, don't rub it with towels.
Brush only very gently from bottom to top.
Don't dye, don't put in conditioner/spray/stuff.
That's basically what I do, and I barely have split ends.
It's a bit worse now that I swim so often due to the bunching under caps :(
Caps are bad for hair too, but chlorine is even worse, so meh.

I noticed Aino mentioned a good hair vitamin, and I just want to put out a bit of a warning on this. It's probably a rare-ish occurrence, but I tried taking Biotin (which is supposed to be excellent for hair and nails) a couple of years ago. However, I have migraines and taking the Biotin actually triggered a weird migraine - I didn't have auras in my regular migraines and after taking the biotin I did...thought I was having a stroke or had a brain tumor - it was really scary.
So just FYI, if you already have migraines be careful about taking Biotin as it may trigger migraines in those already with the disorder.

I only wash my hair when it needs it, maybe twice a week. I brush it snag free before washing. I use a tea tree oil shampoo, but only enough to clean at the scalp. Then use a cream rinse twice. Once to make sure the hair has been well coated, then I rinse it, running my fingers from scalp to ends separating the hair in about one inch "strips" using the force of the shower to help separate each strip. Then I re-condition, gently, so as not to tangle what I just separated, usually only the last 6-8 inches or so. Then I leave this in for the rest of my shower. Sometimes twist-twirling it back up on top of my head, then using a shower cap to contain it. Once done with all the other stuff (shaving, body conditioner....) I remove my hair from the cap and gently rinse out the rest of the conditioner. I get my hair trimmed quarterly. My hairdresser constantly comments that I have no gray... Hahaha, its there but not really obvious! Not bad for 60 years old!

I am seriously jelly of everyone's hair. So many of you have thick and luxurious hair! Not to mention LONG! When I was younger, I was put on a medication that thinned my hair drastically. I've tried so many things to get my hair thicker (vitamins, shampoos, conditioners, pulling on it, etc.) but nothing really works. I know I make it worse, since I love dying my hair lol. I have had about every color in the rainbow on my head. Currently, my hair is bordering on the 'normal' side. It was supposed to be a dark red, but its more of a mousy brown. Here's the hilariously awesome part though. IN the sun, you can see that I dyed over teal. In the sun, you get to see flashes of red (on the top and underside) and flashes of greenish teal (in the middle) lol.

6. Massage your scalp (I've heard this helps
Hope that helps! Sorry it's so long!
I 'm doing option 1 for quite a few years no
w, but i'll check out the other points! Thanks!!

Thanks for the advice! <3

There is so much pretty hair in this thread! I really love your updos, Mermaid Avalon. And those forks, I'm going to try some myself.
I honestly love having very long hair, but I find myself putting it up a lot because there is a lot of wind here at the coast. :)
I have only one pic that shows my hair and is recent. My daughter and I were being silly in front of the camera so I have a silly face. My hair here was to about my tailbone (but layered, and V shaped at the end), and the green is a faded aquamarine that is mostly on the end twelve inches or so, just on a layer a few inches deep under the rest of it, and was pinned up so it showed. I recently cut a lot off, it's now waist length when wet, shorter when dry because it waves up a lot. It'll be back to hip length in no time.
ps. My daughter's face is cropped out, I don't like her pic online for personal reasons. :) I *rarely* put pics of ME online. It might not be here long, haha.

That looks awesome! Maybe one day I'll dye some of my hair.
Some growth tips:
I drink a spoonful of gelatin in a mug of hot beef broth at night before bed. Dissolve the gelatin in a bit of cold water while the broth's heating. Gelatin stimulates hair, skin, and nail growth. My nails usually break easily; now they're strong and shiny :)
Search-and-destroy method of trimming for dead ends. It satisfies my love of cutting hair (no, seriously, I have to really restrain myself from giving myself bad haircuts) and keeps the damaged ends from screwing up all my hair without sacrificing length really. I do a bit every day, since it's so tedious on my EXTREMELY chemically-damaged ends.
Natural Boar-bristle brush. It's the ONLY kind I use. It's the most gentle brush on my weak-ass hair, distributes scalp oils to dry ends, and massages the scalp for better circulation and growth. They're pretty cheap too. Regardless of the type of brush/comb, you should be washing it regularly - if not every night, then AT LEAST weekly, so you're not just smearing oils and dead skin cells all over your head. Same goes for makeup brushes. Always dry face-down on a towel.
Combs - mostly wide-toothed, and seam-free (if a comb has seams in the part where your hair goes through, sand them off! They will snag/break hair). Never brush wet hair, and only use a wide-tooth comb gently on damp hair. Treat your hair like delicate lace - DON'T just run things through your hair all haphazardly! You should not be breaking hairs with every brush. When I reach a stubborn tangle, I mess with it with my fingers. It usually comes apart a lot easier and with less breakage than if I comb/brush it.
Massage your scalp! I like to spray on a refreshing hair tonic I make to stimulate growth and soothe scalp, then massage my scalp. If your head is upside-down it works better, as you're increasing circulation. Circulation = growth!
Speaking of circulation - regular exercise. Deep breathing. You'd be surprised at how many problems in our bodies are caused by chronic lack of oxygen. Breathe deeply (seeking peace, LOL), purposefully, and calmly, and every system in your body gets more oxygen, which is pretty much what everything needs to function/produce new cells).
I shouldn't have to say this here, but drink water :P
Wear your hair up in a braid whenever possible. Now that my hair's long enough, it's usually in a braid or bun. More protection from the elements (and less closing my hair in car windows/doors LOL)! That's not to say NEVER wear your hair down! I just usually keep it safe most days when I'm doing my regular-day stuff.
Vinegar (especially ACV, I use Bragg's) gets rid of build-up and returns the proper PH levels to hair and scalp, and also makes it super-shiny! Mostly if you use raw ACV, but I've used others in a pinch.
Be very careful about hairties. Even my "No-snag" elastics DO snag, because they have the melty plastic bit where a metal bit would be. I like those soft ribbed elastics from the '90s, or scrunchies. I also crochet around regular elastics to make my own scrunchies.
Umm... watch how hard your bf grabs your hair LOL - Mine did it in the moment the other day when it was up in double buns, and when I took them out, found a while clump of split/broken ends right on the top front of my face in a little poofball... At least he was very sorry, since he knew I've been growing it out for months. :)
No towels on my hair. I wring it out gently with my hands in the shower, pat with a towel just to get the major globs of water, then I stick my head through the neckhole of a t-shirt, put all my hair in there, andwrap it up like a turbie twist and tuck the end under in the back. Works great and is more gentle.
Satin pillowcase are best, since they're smooth :) Sleeping with hair in a braid is the best bet, and if you use a parandi it leaves the most memaid-y of waved hair in the morning :)
I agree with everyone who says to use coconut oil. Hair conditioner and body oil, it can't be beat for moisturizing! (apparently not on your face, though, as it is a comedogenic oil, along with olive oil)
Wash hair as little as you feel like. Sometimes for me it's every couple of days when I'm getting sweaty/grimy/swimming, sometime I'll do it once a week. Sometimes I do it even less, depending on where I am, what the weather's like, how my scalp's doing, etc. I find that my hair doesn't look so greasy any more when I don't wash it for long periods than when I first switched from constant washing. I just started washing once a week, with occasional water rinses, and it took a while for my oil production to level out. Also, boar bristle brushes help keep your hair from looking like an oil slick :P

Side note: I use coconut oil on my face. and i have never had an issue with it. It has been fantastic actually. my skin glows and stays hydrated. oh and i cant even see my pores anymore! I think its a based on YOUR face and skin type sort of thing. *nods*
Melusinah, I totally agree. I know of a lot of people who can use coconut oil everywhere. I guess some people's pores clog easier than others? I think the reason I can't use it on my face right now is because I have some weird acne skin condition thing... Just showed up when I turned 18 :/ But I think that when it goes away I could probably use coconut oil on my face then, as it does wonders to the skin on the rest of my body :)

I've had waist length hair since I can remember, but 2 or 3 years ago I cut off ten inches to donate. Then last october I donated another 8 inches.
12777
I miss my long hair though so I've been growing it out again. Here it is now:
12778
My hair care routine is kinda weird. I used to shampoo and condition everytime I showered, but now I only wash it a couple times I week. I use an organic shampoo and need to get an organic condition, too. In between washing I use baking soda and or apple cider vinigar to remove build up and restore the PH balance. I only brush my hair once it's dry and I start from the bottom, working my way up. I don't blow dry or striaghten it.
Whisper: I've cut it to the cycles of the Farmer's Almanac (I don't know if that's just a U.S. thing), I'm guessing it's based on moon cycles. I search-and-destroy on damaged ends every day - I have a LOT of them, but I'm not willing to sacrifice inches of my hair just yet to get rid of all the ends...But when I do actually get it trimmed/cut, I do it by the cycles. It does seem to help, my hair grew a significant amount doing that and before I started any other routine.
Kakarotte: Ooh, thanks for the recipe! Maybe I'll get to try it sometime soon! I just usually don't shop online, as I usually only have cash -.-;
Mary Marine:Your hair is sooo pretty :3 And looks kind of like mine does now, except your hair is so awesomely full! I have noodle-limp hair LOL. And your routine sounds similar to mine! ACV and baking soda are great for buildup and dandruff (on me, at least - my head likes to snow sometimes if I don't ACV it), and I don't think I've ever brushed wet hair! I've seen other people do it, and the sound of stretching/breaking hair makes me shudder :P And always from the bottom up, because my hair will make a huge tangled nest at the ends if I don't, haha. I also never got the hang of a straightener - I have one, but all I've used it for is pressing seams/hems and ironing ribbon/lace LOL!

This is the most recent photo I have of my current hair color. It's slightly more washed out now and the hair on the sides is a little longer but it pretty much looks the same. It's also a mohawk so it goes all the way down the back, too. I use Splat hair color and have found that it lasts way longer than Manic Panic and would recommend it to people that color their hair. There's only a couple of colors available in stores but they've got a pretty decent variety available for order on their website. The boxes you get at the store also include a bleach kit so you don't have to spend money on bleach separately.
Now that I've got my monofin I expect it'll be washing out relatively quickly. I bought myself a swim cap to try and keep the water out of it but it doesn't keep my head totally dry. It only seems to dampen everything at most though so it'll extend the life of the color a little.
Once it does start to really wash and grow out I plan on shaving it all off again anyway. My hair is super, incredibly thick and in the summer it often threatens to give me heat stroke so by mid July it'll probably be back to a buzzcut to help save myself from the heat. I'll miss the color and I've been growing the middle out for maybe five or six months so it's sort of sad for me to see it go but at the same time I absolutely love giving myself buzzcuts and they make me feel super badass so it's not a total loss. My hair also grows super fast so by the time the weather gets cooler I'll be able to comfortable rock a pixie cut without too much hassle or waiting.
I'm also interested to see what kind of reactions a buzzed mermaid will get from people once I eventually do get myself a tail. I know mers are typically depicted with long flowing hair so I expect any with mohawks or buzzcuts will be fairly jarring to some people. I tend to get a lot of positive attention from people for my hairstyle though so I don't think too many people will be upset over it.
I really love some of the long hair in this thread, but I personally can't stand wearing anything longer than a pixie cut without wanting to tear it all out. Kudos to you lovely ladies for being able to handle the length and the upkeep.

My hair used to grow a couple inches a month, and when I cut a bunch off last year to deal with dead ends from chemicals, I thought it would grow back fine. But health problems came in and my hair's pretty much stopped growing at just past my waist. For the first time ever! gahhh.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who has this problem. :( People always give me the weirdest look when I tell them I've been growing out my hair for 7+ years and it's only to my waist. I've been trying everything possible to keep it healthy, even changed my diet and switched over to using Henna instead of hair dye. I think I'm thankfully starting to notice some growth, but it's a slow process. I'm hoping it'll finally reach my hips next year, but we'll see if it cooperates. Good luck on growing yours out. Hopefully it will grow more. ><

Speaking of hair growth; I'm still suprised mine is as long as it is currently.
I had a spell where I was coloring my hair a very light blonde, and while it wasn't that drastic for me since I'm already a medium blonde naturally, the bleach is rough on the tresses. I ended up with a lot of breakage on my ends and I know that my hair could be MUCH longer than it is now had I not bleached it :-( That was about 2 years ago and It's coming back quite well!
One tip I can give is to get more deep sea fish in your diet. Of course, I respect those that may not eat fish for various reasons, but it is seriously the one thing that I noticed was making a huge difference in how fast my hair grows, healthier nails and clear skin.
The wild caught Atlantic Norwegian salmon from Trader Joe's is now dinner at least twice a week at my house, along with some omega oil supplements and calcium.
It may not work for absolutely everyone, but it works for me :)

btw, I love the hues of pink on the blonde, Ulla. (I want to call you Freyja already!) And health wise, I'm working on it with my doctor. I just have a wacky system with bizarrely sensitive allergies and the vitamins being affected are directly related to hair growth and are hormonal precursors, so it's really just killed my hair growth. It's so annoying!

Speaking of mermaid hair, I need to touch up my blue. Atlantic Blue... it starts off a pretty blue with green highlights, fades to a pretty green, then to a not so pretty dull kind of greenishness.... I'm there right now. Bleh.

That sounds gorgeous! The blues and greens are a lot of upkeep though.
I may do a tropic blue to green (or vice versa) on my ends, if the greenish effect from the chlorine is just doesn't leave my blonde alone. Pre & post pool treatments or not ;D

Did you know, that it's actually the copper from the pipes that makes your hair green, and not the chlorine?

My hair style is a short bob.
I've had this style since high school. I've had curls put in before but because my Chinese hair is stiff and unyielding to perms, curls and waves, it usually takes 2 or 3 bottles of solution for the curls to take. And plus I hated looking like a golliwog. So short, straight hair is easy to take care of.
Oh and its black. White too if you count grey hair... Hahaha!

Very interesting! I've had my suspicions about that, too.
I'd love to hear other theories on the chemical reactions between copper pipes, chlorine and hair.

LittleOrca started a great thread about care for merhair some time ago, it's here: http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?231-Mer-Care-for-Mer-Hair
And there are others, but I found that one to have the best info.
Also- it's not just the copper pipes. It's that the chlorine in the water oxidizes the metals such as copper in the water, and together, they discolor hair.

My hair won't grow past my shoulders. It's very fine so it just breaks when it gets that long. And trust me, I baby my hair with good shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, vitamins, biotin, etc. Nothing works. So I'm trying to get some hair extensions that I feel comfortable swimming in for when I do parties and events.

Haha! Yeah, it can be a bit daunting. I did mine a rich magenta once, and when I coated my hair in the dye it looked like a scene from the film 'Carrie'. It was that viscous dark blood color, but when I rinsed it out it was amazing. My head looked like a tropical purple orchid! ;)

I should update on some of my recent hair styles haha.
Recently (June-July) I had yarn twists in my hair and I absolutely loved them!

After I took them out in Late July, I just wear my afro puff . Hoping to find someone who knows how to braid so I can put in crochet braids.
2467324674
I love those yarn twists, Draggersprez! I like to do yarn braids in my hair when it's straight, I've done so many sets of those haha, they look so neat!
Here's my hair right now: dreadhawk (mohawk made of dreads), currently extended with synthetic dreads I made:
24676
24677
Here's some pics without the extensions:
24678
24680
24679
I'll probably be taking the extensions out soon, I've had them in since I got back from the last pirate festival and they are heavy and a pain in the bum to take care of >.< I'll be attaching them to a dreadlock wig or fall or something, though.
I also may cut out my natural dreadlocks... I'm concerned about frequent swimming and how hard they'll be to clean thoroughly (which includes neutralizing/removing all the chlorine)... they're basically little filters/sponges, so things get stuck in there all the time (I'm constantly picking lint out, and I'm sure they're full of pollen from being outside so much this summer). I really love my dreads, and their uniqueness, but they are certainly not a low-maintenance hairstyle! I'm constantly frustrated at all the fuzzies everywhere because, although I myself am a "dreadlock artist" who installs/services dreadlocks for other people, it's really hard to do it for yourself, so I now have this halo of fuzzy hair all over my scalp, and it's really hard to get it to look "neat".
I also miss brushing my hair. And being able to massage/scratch my scalp really well without worrying about pulling hairs out :P

I have to keep my natural hair simple and conservative for my job, but long blonde hair does fit the "stereotypical" mermaid look. I like to do it up with aquatic doodads, like those little gems you can iron into your hair or funky clip-in extensions. On land, I love this hair clip that my host mum gave me when I was staying in Mexico. It looks like anemones. I apologize for the crappy lighting and me bending over.

Galene, I'm happy to find another Henna user on here! :) I might try out hibiscus powder, I've never heard of using that with Henna so I normally use ginger tea and lemon juice. My hair has definitely gotten so much stronger and healthier and I just found out about henna on a whim while looking for a way to make red color stay permanently (another thing I LOVE about henna; After the second time doing it, my henna has never faded in color). People are constantly complimenting the color when I'm out and it's such a big confidence boost from the ugly dead red I had before.

I'm loving all of these hair pics! I've been trying to come up with ideas for what I want to do with my hair, but I've rarely done anything with it color-wise (I had bleached the front about a year and a half ago, but have never really done anything else). I've been really wanting some sort of unnatural colors in it, just to shake things up a bit and better match my mersona. I'm planning on getting my hair cut short again soon, and might consider getting some color put in then.
I really wanna go with a sort of royal-blue color, but I don't know how long it would last, especially where I'd be swimming in a chlorinated pool. :( What's the normal "lifespan" of blue dye?
I find that all the blue dyes I've used fade pretty fast, even when not in pool water (and I've tried most of the blue dyes out there at least once). Blue's a tricky colour to get to stick, some say even harder than red! I may be dying it blue again soon, maybe I'll try out a different kind of blue.
Ideally I'd use indigo or woad to dye the little tuft of hair I have left, as both are supposedly pretty good for you (like henna). I love blue but apparently synthetic blue colour is one of the worst dyestuffs out there to have on skin constantly (and I have stupidly sensitive skin).

Some great hair tips here, and such beautiful hair! I feel compelled to mention....if you have tried everything for a while, and are still experiencing stunted growth (as opposed to breakage)...I would advise you to do a full blood panel. I did one recently for other reasons, and found out that I am hypothyroid, which one effect of that, is decreased nail and hair growth, dry skin, etc. (also caused by thyroid disfunction: hormonal imbalance, irritability, irregular periods/spotting between periods, anxiety, weight gain, and a whole lot of other things.) The best website to learn from is www.stopthethyroidmadness.com. Thyroid disease has skyrocketed in recent years, and as many as 50% of people actually HAVE the disorder without knowing it.
One of the bizarre things that turned up in my bloodwork was that I have a defective gene that makes it impossible for my body to process any B vitamins. Kind of a big deal in the hair department! So I would REALLY encourage someone who has had hair loss, thinning (as I did), and stunted hair growth (brittleness, etc) to have a full blood panel done. It's not cheap, in the $250 range, and then find a good holistic doctor to help you with a treatment plan, detox plan, and supplement plan.
I don't have great merhair, so I'm not gonna post it here until I have a good mer-hair day LOL

Yes henna is GOOD for your hair whereas the salon stuff breaks it down. Also, you can mix the henna with amla and indigo to get pure black. Consult hennaforhair.com for much more information on how to do it.
My picture I meant to do same time of day (outside) on the after pic, which I haven't done yet, and the after pic was taken RIGHT after I did it, inside, at night, under the kitchen floodlight, which is why it looks the way it does! It has already oxidized (darkened) some. On day three or four, I will do a proper after picture. :)

Henna is actually conditioning for your hair where normal dyes will break it down. Things to consider:
- Henna is VERY permanent. Meaning, you can not use a normal dye over the top of it. You pretty much have to grow it out.
- Be very careful that the henna you use is really henna, and not some off-the-shelf dye "with henna." These typically have metallic salts in them which will DESTROY your hair if you ever use anything else after it.
- Applying henna is messy and time consuming, so keep that in mind for touch-ups.
- You can mix with indigo for dark shades, and with cassia for strawberry blonds
- If you have previously dyed hair, test the henna on a small section or some collected shed hair to see how it will react to what you already have on there. Also, henna is a grass-like plant. If you have plant allergies, test the henna, indigo, etc. before you commit to dying your whole head and doing touch-ups
- If you just want the conditioning effect without the color, try cassia. In fact, try cassia first to get a feel for the application. Cassia is not the same as the henna plant, but has the same conditioning effects and same application. It doesn't leave color unless you add something to get a yellow-golden color, but it isn't permenant.

Depends on what you used. I'd test a small section and see. Your typical hair stylist will not know enough about henna to give you good information, as they are only trained in chemical dyes, but there ARE stylists out there who do know, so you could ask around. Also, there is a hair care forum that has loads of threads dedicated to henna if you want to do more research on your own. If you want the link, let me know. I don't want to be spammy. :)

So this was my hair a few months ago, to the human eye it's really not changed much since then as it's so curly and generally hits mid boob level when curly lol when pulled down or straightened it hits the middle/small of my back, I've been growing it for years now. I only comb it in the shower when it's full of conditioner (brushing dry leads to a ginger cloud lol) and as soon as i'm out the shower I run a cheap argan oil (it's blended with macademia nut oil etc) through the ends of my hair and then a sulphate free curl cream. I do dye my hair but only with one that just tones my hair a few shades redder back to my original hair colour. I'm a natural redhead but the colour faded to a yucky inbetweeny colour that didn't know if it was blonde, red or brown lol. Didn't go through all the teasing at school for nowt!
26665
aaand this was my hair August 2013. And I'm considering lopping off a chunk of hair so it's more this length to be a bit more managable and to bring the layers back in a bit more. But my hair doesn't handle the wet-dry-wet-dry nature of mermaiding. When it gets wet I get tons of little frizzy hairs sticking up from my scalp etc that curl cream just cannot re-tame lol. But my current longer length of hair seemed to hold up okay at merfest and not go to frizzy or crazy as it seemed to hold itself together in the curls a lot more.

I recently dyed my hair back to a natural color because of work but it used to look like this:
26711
26712
There's no great way to show off the length but this is a pretty good example of it's natural texture. I have pin-straight hair (asian hair) and it's very durable but the split ends are a bit frustrating. I actually use products and stuff to make it look messy because it's fairly slippery too. I always wanted to be the kind of person who used fancy products and stuff in their hair but honestly, I get the best results from the crappiest shampoo and conditioner I can find, which isn't great for when it's dyed.
I'm the one on the left in the green dress.

Everyone's hair is so beyond amazing, I love all the colors!! I just bought my extensions today to put into my hair, and they'll be put in next week or the week after depending on when they get here so I can schedule an appt. I haven't had hair past my chest since I was like, 12 or something, so I'm stoked to have long luscious hair again while I wait for it to grow out!!! Gahh yay! I also just went back blonde/strawberry blonde again so that's also exciting.
Lilium, I *personally* like your hair looks better longer like it is now - as you said, when it's longer it holds itself in curls better. From looking at your photos I can see that your real "curl" starts at just about shoulder length, and it looks to me like when you cut it shorter, it can't hold its shape as well (hence the frizzing out). Curly hair is sooo pretty, but it looks like a huge pain in the tailfins sometimes

yeah curl tends to begin around my ears at this length cause the weight pulls it down on top. When it's shorter/layered the curls start further up and are able to spring up a lot more. But yus.... major pain in the dorsal :') I get sooo envious of people who wake up with 'bed hair' and can just like spritz with a salt spray or something and run out the door and still look chic.... I can sleep on my hair once before it's too messed up and I have to wash it. But I tend to have to sleep with it in a bun on top of my head.... so basically the sides just frizz out by morning T_T

Also i use baby hair detangler spray. Its a lot of work. ... le sigh... i usually twist it from the roots back until i have little horns. Haha

Unfortunately, my computer (EVEN THE NEW ONE WHOOPEEE) hates me, and won't post pictures. I've tried. But I've been growing my hair out since the beginning of last year when it was just past chin length and now it gets a little past my boobage. It grows faster when I take biotin, actually, and I wash it about three times a week, and it doesn't actually get really greasy unless I go more than two or three days without washing. And even then I just use a little shampoo and let it airdry. My hair is abysmally straight and super silky, so I have a hard time getting it to stay in any particular style. If I put it in a bun, I have to redo it every thirty minutes. And ponytails don't stay either. So I've taken to french braiding it sideways and then sticking it in a bun on one side so I can get the wayward not-quite-long-enough-to get-with-the-rest-of-my-hair bangs into the bun. XD It'll be especially troublesome now that I'm going to be working as a waitress and have to have it all pinned back. Eek! If I can get my computer to do pics later, I'll try, but it's a late for me now...or shall I say early? It's nearly four AM as I type this.
Pardon the rambling. I apologize. I am a sleepy mer.

I've worked with plenty of models who have issues like that with their hair.
to get it to stay in a bun, try some dry shampoo (aussie have a great non-white/non-powdery one out at the moment) and lightly backcomb the whole length of your hair before you style it up, spray with a bit of hairspray once you backcomb too. That should stop the hair from slipping out =)
and if you want it to hold a curl try rag curls overnight on damp hair. Blast with heat (to make sure the curls are totally dry), and a bit of hairspray and allow the curls to completely cool back down, then release the ties, backcomb and hairspray the roots and scrunch in something like a styling cream if you want it glossy or the product I swear would be your best friend - bumble and bumble's texturising spray. It's like a gummy texturising salt spray. You'll be rocking awesome beachy waves all day! You could also scrunch it into your hair without curling just to get some awesome texture and hold.
(people tell me all the time their hair doesn't hold a curl or a style.... I always prove them wrong ;P)

So a quick update on the products I use to keep my hair silky and healthy, previously I told you guys I liked the shampoo and conditioner miracle moisture by its a 10, but I've found a new shampoo and conditioner that's even better! I also mentioned the biosilk silk therapy oil treatment I put in my hair, well on my last round to target I saw that they had a 3 pack, the silk therapy as well as shampoo and conditioner. I bought it (it actually saved me money rather than just buying a big bottle of silk therapy, even though the same size bottle of it was included with the pack along with big bottles of shampoo and conditioner) after the first use I already liked it better! All together it saved me money and it works amazingly! I HIGHLY suggest this stuff!!

I posted this on my FB but I forgot to post it here. My coworkers joke about how when my hair falls out of my veil it's like a magic trick. So my coworker was like "Let me take a picture of your hair." to which I obliged. So I was standing there for a bit and I asked her "Didn't you take the picture yet?" and she said "Um, I'm having a hard time... Every thing I try to take, you look super short." to which I laughed because I AM super short, and it's even more exaggerated in the picture because she's super tall.

Gah I want hair that long but I can never even get close to that length because of split ends. How, how do you do it?
Treat it as gently as possible. Oil it. and for split-prone hair (mine is very fine and loves to split, and is only a couple inches shorter than Anahita's), try micro-trimming. Basically, you trim 1/4" to 1/2 inch every month or two. Most people's hair grows an average of 1/2" a month, so you'd be cutting only part of that. You keep the ends nice that way and still gain length. Also, good diet and lots of water (to drink, not swim in) is essential for faster hair growth. Trim off splits as you find them. It'll grow. :)

Gah I want hair that long but I can never even get close to that length because of split ends. How, how do you do it?
I basically don't do anything to it.
I trim it occasionally, I make sure I'm careful with chlorine on it, and I rarely shampoo it (in that picture it had gone two weeks without a shampoo because I was going to a historical event and needed my hair to have the correct texture, which is why the roots are so dark. Basically I had only been rinsing it with water, oiling it, and then detangling it with a wooden comb and brushing it with a boarbristle brush). It helps that Indo-Aryan hair is really tough and has a long "life cycle" (basically how long the hair continues to grow before the folicle decide to stop) and can withstand the neglect I put it through. The hair shafts themselves are why it's super easy for lots of Indian, Afghan, Pakistani, and Iranian women to just have hair like that. It minds its own business and continues on its merry way provided we do the same. Downside to that? If I don't wax, the same goes for my leg hair. :rotfl:
My cousin was joking with me and said "If your hair was jet-black instead of wine-red we should have named you Rudabeh (Rapunzel)" and all I could think of after he said that was "I wonder if black hair dye would absolutely ruin my hair, because that'd be a flippin' awesome Halloween costume...."

Soooooooo I'm thinking about dyeing my hair. I have naturally ash blond hair with a bit of a strawberry tint, and I spent YEARS dyeing it weird colors and/or bleaching it white-blond before finally letting it grow back out to its natural color. I'm not looking for a permanent dye, maybe demipermanent. I have pale skin so I look good as a redhead, but I'm also thinking of maybe a deep blue or teal (perhaps with pink tips) to match my in-progress tail. Or heck, maybe just mixed blue and pink tips or streaks on my natural color. Thoughts? Suggestions? Dye recommendations?

Don't get chemical dye. Your hair will get very dried and crunchy feeling after swimming in a chlorine pool. I know this even when I put on some hair oil, it still is very crunchy. Luckily, for me the dye is fading and I'm getting my natural black n white again.

splat stays in forever but not without fading. i do hair n im not even sure how u can keep vibrant color in chlorine. id say red would stay the best. also, do a clear color after u color it. blue n teal fade pretty fast but then the yucky drab color hangs around forever. im very blonde naturally and speak from experience. id go with a normal red. garnier has one thas very, very vibrant and lasts

My mermaid hair, got it done in May. Didn't quite think it through though, because I have to take senior pictures this summer and will have to cut the colored part off :/ scared to have short hair again
Couldn't you just dye your ends back to a regular colour?

My hair is a really awkward blonde. Whenever I get it trimmed they always think that it isn't a natural color, so dying it back would be difficult to get the right color without dying my whole head. Too much bleach. The tips were bleached almost white for the dye, and to get it back blonde would require more, but I don't want to kill my hair :P

The full (relaxed) length of my hair. After a few days (especially after braiding) it'll look a few inches shorter, but I swam yesterday and conditioned it so it's ultra straight right now. Finger is at the top of my pelvic bone for reference

The lighting in the first pic is atrocious, so here's the actual color (and gives you an idea of thickness :) )
