2013 MerNetwork Secret Santa: General Interest & Discussion Thread

Who is up for round 3? Here comes MerNetwork's Secret Santa 2013!

Here is a general overview of this year's rules (you agree by signing up):

-You can't spend more than $15 on your gift (this includes handmade crafts, but exceptions may be made if an item is worth more than $15 but is second hand - as in the giver had it).
-If you do spend over $15, don't be upset if you get a gift that cost less.
-Your gift has to be mailed by December 12th - you must be able to commit to this.
-You must state if you are comfortable with being partnered with someone with an international address. (PLEASE TAKE SHIPPING TIMES INTO ACCOUNT!)
-You must be an active user on the forums with at least 30 quality posts by Nov 1st (no spam or things like just "lol").
-Accounts made after November 1 will not be eligible to participate.
-No food, anything live, dangerous/illegal, or inappropriate (NSFW).
-Don't send fragile things unless you're absolutely sure they are protected.
-Your sign-up address does not have to be your own if you have privacy concerns (use a friend’s name and address, etc) – as long as you can still receive your gift.
-Do not share anyone’s information or real names anywhere.
-Gifts are mer-related!
-If you fail at sending a gift even after you've given your word of commitment, your account will be publicly acknowledged as being owned by a jerk.

Privacy rules and disclaimer are the same as last year's.

Last year some mers were contacted by another mer who received their mailing address from their secret santa and it caused some friction and safety concerns. So if you get someone's address for your secret santa, you don't give that address out to another member.

I wouldn't ban them, they may have just figured we are all one big family, it isn't like giving a stranger your address. Definitely stress that the addresses should not be shared, even with other mers, though!

When you sign up for the secret santa there is an option to describe your likes and interests. You can stress your concerns in that section, if you like :)

Actually. The person who did that to me.. it happened around January or so.. Fairly close to christmas. I found out during a tinychat session from the person who was given my address.. and they informed m who had givn it to them. I contacted Iona immediatly about it. Said person was banned for a month if I recall. Though admitly Im still miffed at both parties involed.. My SS for violateing my privacy and the person who got my address because I repeatedly told them No when they asked me for my address, but still went around behind my back like that...


Even still .. Id like to still be involved. My gift wil be hand made useing my horde of crafting supplies. ;)

I know Merbella's makes small scale patches you can stick on your skin. Surely you probably have some extra scale bits from the scale sheets you've been working on. Maybe a baggy of those and spirit gum?

As much as I hate to say it, I think at this point the whole thing should probably be dropped. There just isn't time left, especially for those who've volunteered to ship internationally. I would agree with SeaSister, not-so-secret santa makes sense. And if all else fails we could all agree to push back the deadline to maybe even after Xmas so that people have time to make something special. It could even turn into a New Years (New Mers, or Mer Year) thing?

I got a beautiful purple box, with the little shell box inside, and the lucky stones, and a crocheted cowry shell bracelet, and a glass pendant that looks like a starfish and a sea anemone! I am going to see if I can find some small shells and bits of glass or other mermaid-y treasures to keep inside the shell box and give to kids! Lots of hugs to my Santa (Mermaid Eva :) )!!!!
