Hello everyone..
First let me say that I knew nothing about the Mer community, or that it even existed, until last weekend, when I met Mermaids Amara and Shelley at the Festival of Legends here in NC. I have been absolutely absorbed by my research into this community this week, reading about monofins, and different kinds of tails, and feeling a little overwhelmed! I am amazed that I didn't somehow find out about it on my own, because I've felt a deep connection to the ocean for my whole life.
I was born in NC, close to the coast, and can't even remember the first time my parents took me to the Outer Banks and showed me the ocean. I grew up spending a week almost every summer on the Outer Banks here, spending day after day swimming in the ocean and going to sleep at night to the sound of the waves. I always had a strong desire to go deeper and deeper into the ocean, especially to go out into the waves whenever I saw pods of dolphins swimming by. When I turned 30 recently, that was what I really wanted for my birthday, so we visited Discovery Cove in Florida. That's another story, but let me just say, that being in the water with a dolphin was everything I wanted it to be and more, an experience I'll remember in vivid detail for the rest of my life.
I have wanted a tail since I was a child, and I begged my mom to make me one. "What do you want that for? You won't be able to walk!" was my mom's reply. Of course, I'm thinking, that's the point isn't it?! I want to SWIM!!
I am planning on ordering a FINIS monofin soon, and am working on gaining access to a pool where I can practice with it several times a week. I cannot wait to get my first tail, and I'm so happy to be a part of MerNetwork to get help and support as I work towards that goal!

Thanks for the welcomes! Right now I'm looking to have fun, release my inner mermaid, and just see where it takes me!

That's the best way to do it I think. You get to get your fins wet and have fun doing it as opposed to trying to go pro right off the bat or anything. Good luck on you mer-journey!

welcome!
you're so lucky to have grown up near the coast.

I only had the incredible experience of swimming with ocean wildlife twice.
it was magical, and I'll never rest until I repeat that as often as possible ;)

Welcome to the forum! I have a few things that might help you out,

First off there are LOADS of awesome links and tutorials here, so be sure when you check out each sub forum you look at the very top to see any of the threads that are stickied! I've written a bunch ;)

You may also enjoy a copy of my book, which I'm plugging cuz I have a discount going right now ;) it's all about the mermaid world, getting involved, and experiencing life as a mermaid either for fun or a business! My book is set at 10% off already, but you can take an additional 10% off the hardcopy or digital by adding promo code: MOM10 at checkout! That means 20% off the physical copy, and 10% off the digital. The link: http://www.lulu.com/shop/raina-mermaid/fishy-business-how-to-be-a-mermaid/paperback/product-21180871.html

I've also started a vlog series about mermaiding! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLL8BBR9r-Pi-RWPAUXZrcbDs25GArBhEk&feature=mh_lolz

Thanks a lot, Mermaid Raina! Someone was handing out flyers for NC Merfest at the Festival of Legends, and I've already been considering going next year.. but in the meantime, I have a lot to catch up on!
I have already been browsing through and reading a lot of the tutorials, but it's hard not to get overwhelmed! I'm trying to take it one step at a time, but there's so many exciting things I need to learn..
We'll see, maybe I'll be seeing you at NC Merfest next time..:)
