2014 MerNetwork Secret Santa: General Interest & Discussion Thread

[MerNetwork Secret Santa]

Yay, it's Year 4! Here is MerNetwork's Secret Santa 2014!

Here is a general overview of this year's rules (you agree by signing up):

- We recommend that you spend no more than $15 on your gift (this includes handmade crafts, but exceptions may be made if an item is worth more than $15 but is second hand - as in the giver had it).
- If you do spend over $15, don't be upset if you get a gift that cost less.
- Your gift has to be mailed by December 1st - you must be able to commit to this.
- You must state if you are comfortable with being partnered with someone with an international address. (PLEASE TAKE SHIPPING TIMES INTO ACCOUNT!)
- You must be an active user on the forums with at least 30 substantial posts before Oct 1, 2014.
- Accounts made after October 1, 2014 will not be eligible to participate.
- No food, anything live, dangerous/illegal, or inappropriate (NSFW).
- Don't send fragile things unless you're absolutely sure they are protected.
- Your sign-up address does not have to be your own if you have privacy concerns (use a friend’s name and address, etc) – as long as you can still receive your gift.
- Do not share anyone’s information or real names anywhere.
- Gifts are mer-related!
- If you fail at sending a gift even after you've given your word of commitment, or break the privacy policy, your account will be publicly acknowledged as being owned by a jerk and you will be banned from future exchanges.
- Registration ends on Oct 31, 2014.

Privacy rules and disclaimer are the same as last year's.

Discretion and Liability Agreement
By agreeing to sign up for this event you are agreeing to the following terms:

• All private information of the gift-tee (the person receiving the gift) that will be disclosed (including names, addresses, and photos) will remain private (unshared, un-spammed, and only used for this transaction) unless sole permission from the gift-tee says otherwise. Failure to comply to this rule means you are banned from participating in any other exchanges.

• If you sign up and don’t send a gift, you will be forever known as a person who is unreliable and can’t follow through. Also, people on the forums will generally think of you as a jerk. This is a commitment. If you do not honor this you will be banned from future participation.

• You cannot hold the organizer responsible for the gift you receive or for any liabilities. This is a community event and I have no personal vested interest or ulterior motive in organizing this activity.

Just a clarification about the international shipping. I'm in Canada and willing to ship to USA but can't likely afford outside of North America. I know it asks if you'd be willing from the US to ship to Canada, but not the other way around, just jumps to international. Technically shipping anything FROM Canada is international but big diff between American and everwhere else ;)

I put a little added note in my form, but it be cool to have a check box for that. Though I think there's only a few Canadians so maybe next time around ;)

that was the year before, because it was addressed again last year- and the rule was made last year as a result. I thought it was Meranthony who gave out your info and I don't see him signed up here. I remember witnessing that whole thing ... not cool.

It's nothing personal. It's to be sure the people who participate are active members as people will often join and leave and after the first year we had an issue with a few people who left the forum and got gifts but never sent them.

Hey Iona, are you going to use a forwarding address? Would it just work out better if you use your future address even if it means you have to wait longer? Or maybe you can have it sent to a trusted friend and you can retrieve it later?

I'm asking because it's my first year doing this, and I am not sure how it goes. I don't want to be late with my gift, since I will have for sure to mail internationally.

We have 47 sign ups this year! I'm very excited. It's taking a while to go through everyone's credentials, but the sign ups should be sent out by email if not by tonight then tomorrow.

I'm sorry, the 30 substantial posts has to be a hard rule. We considered doing something where community members can vouch for people to take part, but it's just too messy. However, if someone doesn't follow through with their gift, MerNetwork Secret Santa might make a post about accepting "standbys" or people who want to send a second one. That happened twice last year. The rule is just in place to minimize the disappointment for giftees whose gifts just don't arrive (it's not a 100% effective, but its one measure we can use).

All emails have been sent out! There was a minor snag in the match ups when the form crashed. And some people put their states as their country and it mixed it up a bit. And also the name changes had to be double checked. I think I fixed everything. PLEASE email me if there are any issues or if you did not receive an email and were supposed to! Hopefully the game will be a lot smoother :)

Also, please double check to make sure you are mailing presents to the right country. And email me when you've sent out your present and also when you receive yours!

I don't know if one of the favorite animals they listed is the actual sea creature with that name, or the mythological creature... even worse, their name seems to be based on the mythological creature!

This is a snag, since I have the absolute perfect pendant if it's the mythological creature, but nothing for the sea creature :doh:

I wish there was a way to ask without identifying myself just yet, LOL!

I am currently attempting to track down the one skein of yarn in my house that loves to hide from me all the time - it's the perfect colour for the second part of my gift! If I can't find it, I'll have to use the rather expensive (and more fragile) yarn I have that's the same colour... I never could find the skein of yarn I was looking for. I have looked everywhere I could think of. So, instead, they are getting something made with a different synthetic yarn that is also okay for water use, and will probably look cooler than the original yarn (though I wish it was the right colour, but it's one of their favorite colours listed, so I think I'm safe :p

I am worried sick, because I bought something for my giftee on the 12th, and I just realized looking at the tracking number that the seller sit on my order for more than a week, and shipped it the 21st. It has to come to Europe from the US and then I have to send it to my giftee.

I just hope it arrives on time for the 1st of December. Although there are other things in my package, it would suck that I had to send it without it.

alas, the bag is just 1/3 the size of my dice collection, but thats ok.. I have many other uses for it ;) I think all the glow juice drained out of the beads, because even in the dark, I'm not seeing them glow :( maybe they will get a better charge tomorrow, though, we shall see... haha yeah I figured you might have a mighty dice collection... The collection here is pretty dang big, so we use multiple containers for them :p I figured you may be more interested in the bag as a little mer-accessory though, anyways!

The beads are pretty tiny, so it does have to be pretty dark to see them sometimes (although in summer they get plenty of light) Yay, glad to see it fits well!

I just got my gifts from Raina, (who I had kind of guessed because of delays in shipping, and random shout outs on her page (which I loved) ). I also helped to edit her book and so it was a mash up of presents from thanks from that and secret santa so it was a box of happiness and mermaid awesomeness. A clip, necklaces, and cool fish ornaments, and her book. Thank you so much doll, I love it! I took a soak with the bath fizz and read your book for an hour and a half. It was glorious, especially since I did a hard core leg day-hey I'm only half fish-and then Zumba after. I needed to relax. Mine arrived today at my partners place, he was amused at the giant box, thought it said 'Happy Birthday' on the side and almost opened it before I got there. The bad thing is that it is not showing any changes since the third of this month. The good thing is it says it "arrived to the international destination office". If it does not show changes in a couple of days I will go to the Post Office to see if I can get any news of it.

I don't think so. Both me and my giftee are in the European Union, and traffic of merchandise is supposed to be free between countries. Apart from inspecting it as with any mail, I do not think they should hold onto it for any reason. Of course, I can be mistaken.
