I wish there was a way to "like" your comment on here Raina. Obviously I can't speak for the Inuits in Alaska and Canada, only try my best to bring awareness to the face some of the aboriginals are starving and the only source of food they have is what they can hunt. There are quotas in place actually, so many can be taken in a five year period for the groups that eat the meat for subsistence. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you're worried about the one, worry about the other as well. I'd be more concerned with commericial whaling and tourists trying to try whale meat. If there's a concern about aboriginals hunting whales, then make sure they have access to food with all the nutrients they need to live at an affordable cost.

I actually agree with aspects of both Echidna and Raina's views, which I think shows how I try to balance my sense of fairness, justice, and respect of all with my personal strong animal rights beliefs.

I certainly have empathy for the Canadian Inuit's situation. The extremely high cost of store-bought food is unacceptable, something really needs to be done to reform that. People should be educated about their situation and culture, as most Americans have no idea that there's a population of people here in North America with levels of food insecurity comparable to Africa. If there was something I could do, like help donate to food to them, I would. I'm also concerned about their ridiculously high suicide rate. It goes without saying that suicide rate AT LEAST five times the national average is a very tragic statistic and something needs to be done to help them. I do not agree when activists like Paul Watson demonize the Inuit as sadistic animal killers who in they seem to think kill only because they enjoy it and their culture, not because their food situation is very desperate so they don't have much of a choice but to hunt what they can to survive. I'm not completely sure that they misrepresent on purpose as much as they're just not well-informed about that part of the world, and have a hard time imagining anyone in modern times genuinely needing to hurt to survive. Some people also seem to have a hard time grasping that the situation of Canadian Inuit in Nunavut is very different from to American Inuit in Alaska, who have access to a lot more conveniences in comparison.

With all that said, that doesn't mean I have to like the idea of killing marine mammals. Killing such intelligent and beautiful creatures as narwhals, seals, and polar bears is just not something I could ever be completely comfortable with. Where I think some activist groups have gone wrong with the issue of Inuit hunting is their approach. I think a lot of people in the animal rights and environmental community need to wake and realize that the old saying "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar" is there for a reason. Instead of alienating them by telling them how horrible you think they are, try to work with them. Politely contact Inuit leaders and explain your concerns in a respectful, well-informed manner. Try to help them find alternative sources of food and income so they no longer had to rely on killing animals as much. I would let them know that I truly feel for them and want to help. I also think in respect to their soverignity(sp?), any petitions ending their hunts should be addressed directly to the native leadership instead of the Canadian government. Paul Watson claims Inuit whaling is illegal because it's not approved by the IWC, but considering the past I think it's important to respect native soverignity.

I see both HSUS and IFAW at least attempting to be more sensitive and informed about native issues, by even making infographics and posts clarifying the difference between the large-scale commercialized cull of seals in Atlantic Canada and Inuit subsistence hunting in the north. I've shared some of those posts on my mer-FB page. After the "Sealfie" campaign targeting Ellen DeGeneres went viral last year, I followed a thread on HSUS's page where some Inuit posted their concerns, and the admin politely explained that HSUS does not protest against native subsistence hunting. They handled the situation respectfully, without saying a single harsh word about the Inuit or their culture. I was actually really impressed.

and yeah, I dont like that they eat it either! but I understand, and I do understand the cultural identity aspect, even though they don't use it as an excuse, they are so multifaceted that there's a bigger picture here. I wish everyone could have taken the courses I'd taken!

Tests for me are hard. I get bad test anxiety and forget stuff I know. So I do bad on tests. I'm not doing so good in this math class, getting Ds and Cs on the tests. I should have dropped it and told dad before the drop deadline but he said no and that it was easy class. He's now denying that I ever told him. I'm scared. Cause I know that I'll not be able to pass this class with a C and that he'll be very mad at me and possibly hurt me mentally and maybe physically.

What kind of math is it? Khan Academy might be able to help with the content, and as for your test anxiety - can you ask your professor if there's any extra credit work you can do? I'm sure he/she might he able to find some type of work you can do so that you can demonstrate that you know the material.

Something that worked for me is having a teacher read it to you and you respond conversationally. Some places allow it, some don't.

I don't understand when someone (a guy at that) tries to tell me that mothers cannot lactate unless they are expecting or have recently had a baby. And if thy do it's because a doctor gave them chemicals to unnaturally produce hormones. I've tried explaining to him that adoptive mother can breast feed naturally. But noooo, it's "common sense" that they don't.

Because he doesn't know the facts and can't admit that he doesn't? I don't think a lot of people are aware that adoptive moms can bring on lactation with natural methods. But if they're told this, without backed-up facts to the contrary, they probably ought to admit they don't have enough information and go get that information. Then admit they were wrong or misinformed. It just kills some people to admit they're wrong or that they don't know everything.

It feels like forever since i have last been here.
I have missed all of you!
I have been working super hard and extremely long days.
The house we live in was still for sale all this time. My parents actually offered us to buy it for a very low price.
We tried to but could not get an appointment with the bank, so we wanted to seek out a different bank or some other way.
Then my mom asks me if it is ok that they sell the house for a much larger amount to other people. If so, they will help us out with building a new house on their land.
We thought that that was a great option as well. off course we would not take a house for free, never.
But since my hubby and i are business owners it is extremely hard to get a loan or morgage, not just extremely hard, it is impossible since banks feel that having your own business is not a steady income even though you can proof that it is.
So if my parents would be able to help us out we could simply pay them back monthly amounts which would be great.
Today we got the phone call that this house is sold and we have to be out by Decembre 1st.
BUT!!! Here it comes....my mom said on the phone:" So you need to go to the bank asap and get a loan for a house."
I was shocked and lost for words, then i explained to her that our own bank did not even want to talk with us about a possible loan since we are business owners.
Not to mention the fact that if we build on their land no bank will give us a loan since we do not own the land but my parents.
To a bank not even owning the land is an extra risk.
So what do you do now you may wonder....well...we have no clue.
We have been investing in our business the past months and our business has been growing and growing which is great. But if we had known we would not have my parents help out financially we would have no invested like we did and looked at other options.
I am stressed out and upset.
Off course it is my parents money and they can spend it as they please, i only wish they would have given us a heads up when they changed their minds about helping us out, would it have killed them to talk to us about having changed their minds? A little heads up?
My mom was in a complete panic since they have an entire building to unpack before decembre first, yet they are not willing to come home early from the holiday they are on.
We still have so much work to do, to try and even get the building permit to build a house on their land, then find the right house building company and then to get the job done.
And we have 4 months to do it in.
I had 2 building companies that had ok prices for the wooden houses. I talked to both of them today and one of them called me back this afternoon. Well....turned out i misunderstood him in every conversation, however that is possible. And the houses he builds are €100.000 more then he said to me a few months back so that is a no no.
The other company has houses that are around 100m2 (what we are looking for since we work from home as well) and prices around €40.000 but this is roof tiles, excluding foundation, gas electric and water installation and you have to put a kitchen in, bathroom etc.
At this point i have no idea if we are able to afford anything.
Renting is a problem for us as well since we work from home and have and need all our supplies at home to do our work, i may have to look into renting again.
My hubby is from America and he has said our other option is to move to America, we live in the Netherlands now.
That would mean selling everything we have asap and starting all over from scratch since the move alone will not be cheap and then finding a house in America, getting my dog there as well......
If you think hard work is paying off.....well forget it!
I have been working my ass off the past months, working non stop, haven't had a holiday in years and we are still in shit. Sure our business is growing and sales have almost tripled this year but does the bank care? Nope.
After all this hard work we still are at a point where we are stuck.
I was just about to take this weekend off since i have been dealing with a bad foot (most likely tendonitis) for weeks and weeks now and have been working non stop.
I did try to lay on the bed but still working in bed with the laptop.
Finally i thought i could rest this weekend only to hear this news and my hubby telling me :" We will not be able to rest at all the next 4 months.."

I'm back in my old home turf of New England for about a week, and I forgot to tell my big brother that I would be in the area, so now he's feeling quite hurt that I didn't tell him and even though he said he could still get time off work to visit with me he declined when I tried to make plans with him. So now I think he's mad at me and I feel like such a huge jerk. Trying to arrange to see any of my friends or anyone who isn't related by blood has been awful, getting a solid schedule has been like trying to nail jello to a wall so I had no idea what to tell anyone when they asked which days to take off from work or where we could meet, which left a lot of people who were hoping to see me feeling put-out. I should have at least told him, though. I'm such an awful little sister.

And yes, working like an ox does not pay off in Europe (you'd have to do something illegal or unethical to become rich here...), space and houses cost a life's ransom in the denser populated areas, and living isn't cheap either.

So I can relate.
We've been looking to relocate forever, but it's too darn expensive, and I cannot imagine getting to overseas with my 2 little ones.
It feels like being stuck, and all that ever comes up is :money:

You know what that makes you? That makes you human, nothing more, nothing less.
If you have told you brother that you simply forgot, that should have been enough for him.
The fact that he is now not wanting to see you is not your fault but his, and it is his loss nor yours.
From what you write i can see you are doing the best you can and the people that love you will now and will wait for a next time to be able to see you.
I have a friend who lives in the next town from me, we rarely see each other and we rarely email since she is very ill.
When she does email she is always apologetic and i always tell her to stop apologizing. We will see each other when we see each other and we will write when we write.
True friendship and truly loving and caring for someone means there is no time limit to when you have to see each other or write or anything.
So do not worry or beat yourself up about it.:hug:

I know exactly how you feel, it sure feels like the only way to make money is to do something illegal which we are not prepared to do, if only i were more of a bad ass without a conscience :lol:
I even told my hubby yesterday:' I have been working my ass of for years now without a holiday...and what good did it do us? We are still in the same place as we were years ago."
And to top it off, about a month ago i was able to finally put exercising into my daily routine again so i decided to start up slowly so i would not overdo it....and i got repaid with a nice case of tendonitis in my right ankle. How lovely.
I kept on walking and working the next 2 weeks until it got so painful that my hubby demanded i stay in bed as much as possible while he did most of the chores and work for me. He brought me my laptop in bed so i could at least do all my computer work everyday ( about 6 hours every day of work on that thing)
My foot is slowly getting better even though it is still in pain and i have decided not to stay in bed anymore and just get back to work. No other choice at the moment.
One positive thing happened though, this morning when i woke up i remembered having talking to a 3rd building company and i looked it up and remembered the man told me that 100m2 is around €20.000 for the house and then probably another €20.000 for the foundation, installment of electric, gas and water etc. So that is already a much better price for us. We will have to contact them on Monday to see how fast they would be able to deliver the house.
That does take the pressure of a bit but we still have a long road ahead of us to figure out what we can do.

So sorry about the tendon. I've started working out again too. I miss the physical prowess I had when I was doing Martial Arts. I left just as I started to earn the title of "Martial Artist" because I was terrified of the responsibility of being a black belt. Stupidest decision of my life. Of course I was eleven, but still.

And about the lactation mansplaining. Even men can lactate and successfully feed children. I can't remember when, but I DO know that a European man fed his babies when his wife died in childbirth. (Just so the asshat can't say "well, probably only in little villages in Africa" or some such bullshit.)
