It's usually said that the bigger the amplitude, the slower you go, which is why pro swimmers aim for a fast, low amplitude kick.
But with my timed fin test I've found that it really depends- on your buoyancy, on your speed, on what you're wearing.
Sometimes, a bigger amplitude can give you more push (especially when wearing a tail) and thus be faster.
I don't think there is this recipe that's true for everyone.
Right now I'm timing myself with different fins in different tails.
I will share the results once I have them all, but it's already clear that a tail slows you down like no tomorrow.
Like, I'm faster without fins than with fins in a tail, by a large margin.
At least when I'm using a flowy fabric tail with a big fluke.
how did you specifically test speed again Echidna? We used actual testing equipment and the data goes through a system to be interpreted, in addition to timing. And we've done it over and over and over again to get our consistent results for each and every variable.
We're also testing in actual salt water, not chlorine, fresh, or bromine.
For me at least, I'm faster in my tail than I am in legs. It also depends on the monofin, my trainer and competitor are amazing, where my old fish butt tail with an oceanika was slower, but still I feel like I get more bang for my buck by being in tail.
I'm WAY faster when I'm in my tail than without personally:) Raina, I love reading on the studies you're doing! It's so interesting seeing all of the scientific information behind swimming in tails!

My simple The2Tails tail got me out of a rip current in Costa Rica, while at the same time 2 swimmers and even a surfer had to be rescued by lifeguards! It was part speed, part stamina, as I did a backstroke/dolphin kick until the swell of a wave came, then I would do an underwater dolphin kick as fast as I could using the push of the wave. I have no doubt that it would have taken me longer and more effort to get out if I was just swimming.
In making my silicone tail I def want to know as much as I can about preserving the performance aspect of the monofin while balancing it with the aesthetics of a mermaid tail. Excited to see Raina's results.
It's been crazy, I will say we have tested two prototypes so far that change how you wear a monofin, to make it hands free to get your feet in and out (whether in a tail or just a monofin) cut back on the pain monofins inflict upon our feet, and expand our range of motion and ankle support. This is being combined and tested against the data we already collected of how monofins swim on their own, and how they work in tails.
So far I have found the results *interesting* based on my personal experience of testing the two prototypes. The second was certainly improved compared to the first. But personally (without having seen any of the data yet) I *feel* as though it drastically changed the way your body moves when doing the dolphin kick and I *suspect* it uses more oxygen from your body. It made it *feel* easier and I could certainly swim around with no pain, and lift flukes easily etc and get my feet in and out, but so far it made it personally feel to me like it increased how much body energy was needed if that makes any sense at all? I feel like I got far more of a workout from our prototypes. I also felt like I did turns, rolls, flips, and side swimming 1000 times easier.
but again that's just my PERSONAL experience, and not actually an interpretation of data. What I think feels harder to do, may just be different to do, and output different data.
I am really curious to see the interpretation of these first few rounds of data collection. I think it's being published sometime this week. (or submitted for publishing)
Are they testing your your breathing to see if the fins actually affect your oxygen use?
Does material of monofin affect your speed? Or is it more reliant on your swimming skills?
It would be so interesting and cool to find out all these things.
