That Awkward Moment When: Mermaid Edtion!

TAMW you are excited about the campus olympic pool . . . but then turns out they are going to be remodeling it for at least a year.

That is what is happening currently with my local Aquatics Centre. On January 26th I was able to have my first swim since I ceased lifeguarding (8 YEARS EARLIER), it was my first-ever time monofinning, aaannd then the Centre closed down and is STILL remodeling. Thus I'm going from one homemade-monofin swim to full Merbella performance outfit/tail; 'tis a good thing I lifeguarded for so many years that I feel at home in the water even fully-clothed!

EDIT: For added fun, I stopped lifeguarding before transitioning via hormones; when I monofinned I was physically much weaker yet actually swum more easily....Such is the female form!

Now that I think upon it; ^ that was/is one huge AWKWARD MOMENT!

Michelle that sounds rouughhh ugh. I'd cry. I was so exited to swim in a big pool again since I didn't have a chance to all summer, but alas, I will have to wait. Hopefully the aquatic center in uptown will let me use my tails.

That awkward moment you're swimming on the deepest part of the pool (20 ft) with your tail and every kid tries to swim that deep just to say hi, and the moment you come up for air, everyone jumps and starts swimming towards you and touch you

I can totally relate to that, and I sympathize. Although I wish my public pool was 20 feet deep. I have to get by with barely 8 feet.

That awkward moment when a young boy sees your seaweed silicone top and goes "Ooooh, what is that!?" and reaches out to touch it. You have to actually grab his hand and pull it away so he doesn't end up touching your boob.

The awkward moment that follows when a random adult dude is watching, finds it funny and says "Ha ha, the boy is smart, he knows how to get to the good part!".

That awkward moment when you're helping a mermaid get a tail on and just have to look at her and apologize before laying on top of her to get your arm down to the foot pocket because her foot is stuck.

Case and point, I think I need longer arms.

Also, that awkward moment when you're on a double date (along with another mer from your pod) and you walk past a restaurant aquarium, reach out to the tank, and whisper ¨my people¨ as a joke while your date, who doesn't know you're a mermaid, watches in utter confusion.

That awkward moment when you overhear your boss making plans to go to the World Maker Faire in two days...with new clients, new clients whose 3D printer exhibit is in the same area where you are going to be exhibiting your mermaid tail process and spending the day ON DISPLAY IN YOUR NEWLY COMPLETED MERMAID TAIL.

TAMW you leave the pool after taking off your tail in the water, to dry out on the bench because you've got blisters on your ankles.
TAMW ppl are openly staring at you whilst you are sitting with a big towel wrapped up, with your mermaid regalia scattered around your feet!
TAMW after you dry out, you think "should i go back in or not", then look at the clock and think "Carps that! I'm going back in with my TAIL blisters n all!"
TAMW you try to be smooth about it, shoving a huge monofin back into a wet soggy fabric tail, hoping it won't rip at the weak points cos you underestimated how much fabric you need there...
TAMW you put on your tail too far from the pool's edge and have to walrus wobble back into the water.

That awkward moment when you take off your tail after swimming for 2 hours, and realise you have almost forgotten how to walk. Gah, shaky legs.

TAMW you are trying to clean your dorm room with a (stuffed with pillows) mermaid tail in the middle of the way, and have to end up carrying it on your back while you try to pick everything up and get enough room to put it back down.

That awkward moment when your boyfriend comes home from work for his lunch break and walks into the bathroom to find you lying in the bathtub with a blanket wrapped around your legs and playing ocean sounds on your phone and you have literally no idea how to explain yourself as he just quietly backs out of the room and closes the door...

It's been a weird day for me.

TAMW you're doing a photoshoot at the beach and a giant wave crashes on you as you're grabbing onto a rock so you won't be thrown around by the water..

TAMW someone in your class starts yelling at you out if excitement about how jealous they are that you're a mermaid, leaving everyone else in class in a state of confusion

TAMW You find out from a guy you barely know that a group of guys have pictures of you as a mermaid saved to their phones...
