I'm frustrated with the lack of variety between the tails but does anyone think that their undersides have gotten even lighter as the series went on? Like I feel like they used to be all dark gold, then they moved onto orangey gold to lighter gold and now they have a gradient from orange to white...

I'm a fan of white tails, but it seems to me they meticulously painted the first tails, then gradually slacked off as there were new and more mermaids.
In the moonpool group shots, all the tails appear very pale in Mako season 2.
I read somewhere that the Mako series had changes to the suits which reduced weight and I'm guessing cost.
They have more swimming shots, and they looks real. I'm sure they still tow them in some shots although It looks like they've been practicing.
I ready for the rest of the episodes.

Reducing the weight and improving manoeverability has nothing to do with less intricate paint jobs though.
I'm on episode 6 of the second season.

To my best knowledge, they have not yet announced this. Nah. I reckon the Mako tails are the H2O originals, which they upgraded and repainted once for Mako Season 1, but after that couldn't be bothered to repair and retouch.

Jake and Erics gotta be new. Mako is their big hit, relative to the cost of production a paint and some new fins can't be that much.

The Mako Tails I believe were made custom fit to fit the new actresses, not the old H2O tails.

The best way to judge when the second half the season will come out will be to follow it's schedule in Australia. Right now I think they're on the 6 episode so once the 13th episode has aired, I assume they will release the second half.

It's nearly five and not up, tbh I don't think it's going up today. Normally it goes up at midnight my time when Netflix uploads a new show to the listing. Could be wrong though. :/

I'd say we have about a month left. If they air one episode a week, we are on episode 9 right now in Australia. I expect they will wait until they have all completely aired just like they did last time. I would expect a May or June air date for the second half of season 2.
