I found this video for a potential fin for shark tails. I think it's really neat and has potential. Arm strength is a must and the paddles could be made to fit the look of the mermaid or merman.

We discussed that fin a year or so ago.
There is a reason why no one swims like this
(It is slow, cumbersome and ineffective technique-wise.)
I'd love to see a mechanism invented for moving the fin for you.
I don't know if it was just the type of monofin they were using... but to me it looked like every person it that video had awful dolphin kick technique... The shark fin was kind of cool though...
I have to say that although the shark-fin is kinda bad in terms of swimming and efficiency, it looks really effective anyway! I was wondering when someone would make a vertical fin![]()

I mean, the concept is quite interesting, but I am sure it would cause a whole lot of strain on the swimmer using the vertical fin.
Fish spines are designed to move side to side for propulsion. Primate spines are built for...well...thrusting and undulating.
A vertical tail is impractical and potentially injurious.

the shark mono fin looks coolbut just for swimming as a shark looks hard I rather do the old dolphin kick thin a shark plus swimming side to side looks hard too
If you guys have seen the movie "Dolphin tale", it explains how the dolphin's spine becomes mangled after swimming without an actual fluke for a long time. I like the idea of vertical movement, but REALLY wouldn't reccommend it. Like what PearlieMae said.

those fins are just too floppy. Those poor swimmers have no propulsion whatsoever.

yeah the monofin made me die inside( =A=) it looked like the monofin version of a floppy old broken shoe.
I know it sounds mean, but I had to chuckle a little at the video. It reminded me of those old silent film reels of people trying to get some of the early crazy "flying machines" off the ground (or crashing horribly).
Yes! I had a pair of old Doc Martins that eventually did that, and this fin totally reminded me of those. Sad indeed.

My spine hurt a bit just watching the dude with the pole.
I'd use such a device with the utmost caution (or better, not at all. I only got one spine.)
Do these people know that you can get much better propulsion swimming sideways?

yeah, the monofin made no practical sense to me. I don't know what exactly good it does for the swimmer when it is only partially attached to the foot pockets. It looked very awkward.
I just can't get past the monofin.![]()
