That Awkward Moment When: Mermaid Edtion!

TAMW you're trying to describe to a lifeguard your goals in the water, without actually saying the "m" word.

TAMW you give in and just tell her what you're working towards and how hard you're really working to make your mermaid dreams come true.

TAMW you find yourself babbling, trying to explain how real mermaids actually are.

TAMW she not only agrees with you, but seems even more excited then you. (Do I sense another fish in the lake?)

I'm glad I told her because she told me about fins (non mono) that the gym has that I can use until I get my first fin. She stayed with me (from the deck) during the first few laps, coaching me. Didn't expect that. It was kind of her. She complimented me on what a natural I am in the water. Wow! I'm headed towards the right sport all right! It excited me so much that I decided that I'm going to get my first fin (NOT tail, just the fin) for Christmas IF I can lose a total of 60 pounds by then. (20 down, 40 to go. If I keep on track, that should be VERY easy!) WOW! Is it just me or does swimming like that give you even MORE energy? But maybe I was just really happy and excited to be swimming in fins for the first time in my entire life!

TAMW you feel like a frog walking in the fins on the deck to the shallow end and say so. Then, while you're practicing with them, you start doing the frog kick and singing "A Froggy Went A Courtin"! I swear that's gonna have me laughing for a long time to come! Great memories were made today. TAMW when the pool grows quiet and you feel eyeballs on the back of your head. (The lifeguard was talking to someone else at that point.) I was just being silly, enjoying my new discovery, minding my own, but I got to pay back the kindness of the lifeguard with a bit of humor. Made my day all around!

Then I realized that I haven't worn the tail I *do* have in months, so I put it on and I feel a little better now.

TAMW Your wife is out of town on a beach retreat with friends, you have taken your youngest daughter to a pancake breakfast for her Cheer group, you see two Cheer moms looking at a mermaid on one of their phones, and you blurt out "Oh, I know her. We swim together some Wednesdays."

Yep. "Outed" myself as a merman in front of the Cheer moms. I'm sure the news has traveled to Botswana by now. To be fair, I gave one my Merman Dan business card and they liked my page on Facebook.

Not sure if this qualifies as awkward or awesome, but I had two moments this week both involving big manly men turning into 3 year old girls upon seeing tails:

1: At UPS shipping Mermanda's tail when a big tattooed dudebro sees the tail and loses his mind. Says the coolest thing he's ever seen, he asks so shyly if he can touch it, etc etc. He's half considering getting one now.

2: My house has super old wiring, and last night one of the "legs" decided to give out completely (while I was painting a tail, too!), knocking out power to half my house. So the guys from the power company had to come out and rig a fix for me. I couldn't close the garage door, so the tail was just hanging out for all to see. These two big burly bearded dudes from the power company were just shy of squealing like school girls when they saw it. We wound up talking for far too long about tailmaking and professional mermaiding. Bonus: one guy's wife works for the local small business association, and can help me with accounting! Woo!

TAMW the really old guy sharing the lane with you, yells out whilst he's halfway down the lane and you at the other end, "I LOVE YOUR SWIMMING COSTUME!"
TAMW each time he passes you, he says nice things about your tail, and eventually you talk to him a little bit and say how much fun it is and good exercise at the same time.
TAMW one suggests he get one too, and he's says, "I'm too old"
TAMW one says goodbye and he's says, "I swam with a mermaid today! No one's going to believe me!"
