Thread: Show us your tail designs!

    They're showing up for me.
Here's my design, I'm still debating if I want to make it a hybrid tail or just full silicone (using caulking) because I know I can get the gradient using silicone if I use a airbrush but getting the gradient using sequins will be harder, but sequins will glisten more.

Thank you. Does the fluke size seem okay to you? To me it looks proportional if it was to be made into a tail but I wanted a second opinion from someone more experienced with tails.

Would adding glitter to the silicone when you cast it help with the glimmer?

This one is like the perfect balance between super pretty/cute and super cool. If that makes sense. Not that any of those words infers that they can't imply each other. Or something. >.>

So stunning! I love your choice of make up, too. The purple really screams heat for some reason!

I spent ages looking through this thread while bored at work - it's fantastic seeing so many design ideas.

I've got loads of ideas, and I'm in the early stages of making my first. The first pic is the one I'm making. The second is my first attempt at digital tail art (I'd thoroughly recommend the art rage app for anyone with an iPad and touch screen brush - it's sooooo much fun!) I'm not set on the exact layout of colours but you get the general idea! I'd be continuing to fade from purple to black as you go round the back toward the dorsal fin.

I'm also thinking of a peacock inspired tail...

Still a bit of a way to go on that one

I love your design Momo! I am a big fan of markings on tails.

LouLouBelle - I have been working on a peacock inspired tail design too but I can't seem to decide on a final design for the fluke. I want to take a lot of inspiration from the different feathers such as the sword feathers and butterfly feathers but I also don't want to make it look too bird-like. It would be cool if the tail could shine different colors in different lighting just like peacock feathers do. In some lighting they are more blue-green and in other lighting they are more orange/pink/yellow. When my peacocks get wet in the rain their feather color looks completely different when wet. I see why so many people take inspiration from peacocks for their tail. They are really beautiful birds.

This photo I took of some of my peacock's shed saddle feathers might help you out in your scale designs:

That image gave me a really cool idea I haven't seen yet!- Feathered tail, kinda like the sister to the sequined tail.

That's so cool that you have peacocks! They really are stunning birds. I googled photos of them in flight and they put me in mind of gorgeous feathery dinosaurs... I think it's the feet that do it!

Thanks for the photo - it wouldn't show up on tapatalk but I could see it on the website version. Not sure why!

Have you tried Pearl ex pigments? They do a few duo colours that look different when light reflects off them. I haven't tried them in scales yet, but they look pretty in their pots!

For the fluke - you could do a peacock coloured fluke with just a couple of big eye spots? I'd thought about that when I was drawing the butterfly fluke, but then thought a feathery looking peacock tail would be stunning.

Wouldn't the feathers break down or get stuck together because of the water?

I tried setting peacock feather into silicone...the results were disappointing.

Speaking of Peacock tails, I found this really pretty card and I thought I would share it!

    That picture's lovely

I'd love to see a tail with a peacock fluke that's at least the same length as the tail body. I've no doubts it would be so impractical to swim in that there wouldn't be much point in even including a monofin... But it would look good!

Pearlie - I would never have thought of setting feathers in silicone. It's a shame it didn't work - what happened?

That would make a gorgeous tail for dry events.

I agree. If the base is made out of neoprene instead of silicone I don't picture it being too difficult after doing a couple swatch tests for feather layering.

That's funny that you're talking about peacock tails!
I am trying to decide on my first tail and I think I want to make a peacock inspired sequin tail. ^_^
I'm still working out some designs but I'll post the final design here!

Nice. I'm looking forward to what you come up with.
