I'm not sure how an entire tail would look with the eye feathers completely covering it, but I think if the peacock eye feathers were scattered in among green and some bright blue scales, it could be quite striking. Maybe the blue scales could start where the legs start to taper into the ankles, to echo the look of a peacock's neck.

A whole tail made from the tail feathers would be something...

That was my sketch from before - I don't know how easy it is to visualise, but I've got the scale designs on the right and just colour coded the areas in the left. I'd looked at photos of peacocks and the different feathers - I hadn't realised just how many different types of feathers a peacock has! The colours in the sketch aren't exact - they were the closest match with the coloured pencils I had to hand...

Pearlie - those scales are gorgeous. I'd really really love to see your version of a peacock tail!

I've been wanting to make a very elaborate dry tail. Something that has just tons of sparkle, and details and such. I had been going back and forth about what to base the tail on until it hit me the other day. That's when I realized I could make my tail from my wedding dress. It's just sitting in my closet and I don't have any daughters and it's covered in lace and sequins.
    I'm excited.

That's awesome! I had an idea to do that, but a swimming tail, because I have a wedding dress I bought at a thrift shop for a Halloween party years ago...lots of nice detail, but not stretchy, so I never pursued it. I think it would be perfect for dry/parade events!

Will you be coloring yours or are you going to be The Mermaid Bride? I can't wait to see what you come up with!

I haven't decided yet. The fabric has a ton of clear sequins which might not take color well or if it does, it might not look that great. I'm anxious to get working on it. I'm also glad my husband doesn't have a problem with it either, lol.

The clear sequins probably won't take color, but they'll still be shiny over the fabric, whatever color it takes on. If it has faux pearls, they can get blotchy if you dye the fabric. Good luck!

That's what I'm afraid of. I MAY remove them, dye the fabric, and them put them back on.

That sounds tedious but worth it IMO.

That would be amazing. Most wedding dresses are only worn once, so turning yours into a tail would be perfect. Just take your time and make sure it's exactly how you want it - it'll be so worth it in the end!

Ditto! I would love to watch he progress on that one.

So, I'm staying with my parents over Christmas and don't have access to my tail making supplies. I do however have my iPad and imagination...

Tail based on a small tortoiseshell butterfly.

    Back:

(Will have heel fins very similar to the pectorals)

If that was blue I'd rock the shit out of that tail. Unfortunately I look terrible in anything orange.
