Thread: Mermaids swimming into Libraries

    Mermaids swimming into Libraries

So, I was wondering if any of you mer-people have spent time reading books or doing crafts with kids at your local library? (In your fins of course) I can't swim for a few months yet due to injuries, so I wanted to spend that time getting out in the community. I thought immediately of the library since every time I go there, I hear screaming kids! I'm wondering how you went about convincing the librarians to let a mermaid in and how it's worked out for you. I need some input!

I actually just did something with my library yesterday and will be doing another event this summer.

I approached the Children's Director with the proposition and later the Library Director. They were both extremely excited and basically demanded that I do an event with them. :P

I've never done library visiting, but if you're injured and looking to go out and mermaid on land for your community you might consider visiting children in the hospital.
I do this once a month in a wheelchair and the kids really get a kick out of it!

I work in a library; there ARE screaming kids everywhere. Your library should love the idea.

I just talked to my library, it was surprisingly easy! The director thought it was a great idea! Just be straight: you want to do a mermaid storytime and crafts for the kids. Good luck! I hope you can get into a library!

Library storytime is SO much fun! Last year Faerie Mermaid Galene and Salty Stuart the Pirate (my hubby) did a monthly storytime series at our local library. At each program I read a water/animal themed book from the library's collection, then Stu and I performed a music number, followed by a short nature demo or craft project. The librarian was delighted to have us and we had a lovely time with the kids. This year we are expanding to other libraries and will feature my first orginal children's book, which has just been published.

We branded our programs "Storywings": http://www.storywings.org

Most libraries are eager to offer interesting activities for their children's area and will jump at the chance to have a real, live mermaid at storytime! If you like kids, it's a rewarding and easy way to perform!

Exciting news: my first children's book has just been published! The Hapless Habits of Mona Louise is a loving tribute to the seahorses with whom I share my life:

Mona Louise is hapless. That's what her brothers and sisters say.

According to them, seahorses should do things in the usual way. But Mona Louise has her own ways. She plays with her food. Her dance style is awkward. She sleeps in a dish, and hangs upside down, and prefers the company of snails and shrimp. Mona Louise begins to worry that her hapless ways are just... wrong. But Massive Mama, their very tall caregiver, loves Mona Louise just the way she is. Especially the way she is! And that makes all the difference.

Galene that's awesome! Did you hire an illustrator?

  16. #16
Nope, I did the illustrations myself. They're digitally painted photos of my actual seahorses. I've recently seriously gotten back into fine art (mostly watercolor), with plans to illustrate my future books old style with paint and brush in hand. Stay tuned for The Seasick Mermaid, coming in 2017!
