That Awkward Moment When: Mermaid Edtion!

Also, that awkward moment when you decide to blow out your air and sink. You look around yourself in the pool, watching the other swimmers and the water itself; you are completely still but for the turning of your head. Your lungs begin to burn. A flick of your monofin brings you back to the surface from eleven feet and it feels so magical.

And then you notice the lifeguard is staring at you, half standing in her chair, life preserver hefted.

She'd been just about to jump in after me! Whoops. Didn't mean to scare her.

Yeah, I'm not even allowed to hold my breath for a 25m lap of the pool where I live. I have to take at least one breath on the way, and there's no chilling out at the bottom breath-holding allowed. Talk to your guards, let them know your experience, and if you mermaid professionally, and offer to show them some of your tricks so they know what it looks like when you're doing your thing and what would be an indication you're in trouble.

11 feet of swimming pool?? That is so awesome!!!

I only have 2.08m to "dive". Though I'm the only one allowed to swim under all the lanes and hang off the ropes, I don't get in trouble. And they know that I can't see far distances, and HAVE to cross lane traffic just to read the tiny clock on the other side of the pool. I also love doing the dead fish trick, where I dive to the bottom, turn around and float up facing the surface.

TAMW one finally gets to use the skills one has been practicing all along, when the boys don't put the lane ropes back in, and there is "open swimming" in the other 25m half of the pool. And its so crowded. So am dodging and turning and barrel rolling along to avoid crashing in other swimmers and side jumpers. What a workout!!!

That awkward moment when your old gym membership gets to expensive and you have to move to a new pool, but the new pool only goes from 3ft to 4ft 6in and your old one had two pools: one 3ft to 8ft and one 3ft all the way. And just when you were getting confident enough to swim freely in the deep end. But, hey, at least I still get to go to the pool, right?

TAMW you're hiking on with some people from your living area, and see some other students from your college (different living area) and greet them. you recognize two of the people and can't figure out who they are until
Guy 1: Are you savannah?
Me: ...yes?
Guy 1: your photo is on our wall!
Guy 2: hey I was that guy poking his head outside of his room when you went to add the triton photo to his door

That's pretty much how I approached the aquatic center, the week after MerFest 2015.

"I see you sell monofins in your Pro Shop. Do you allow fins in the pool?"
"Yes."
"How about a monofin wrapped in silicone that pulls up to my waist, then?"
"Just ask the lifeguard when you come by for a swim."

Now merfolk rule the pool!
