    Newbie Monofin

Alright, so Im looking for my first monofin. The only other one ive swam in was my friends old homemade plexiglass one that recently broke.

Now, Im just going to be swimming in pools because I'm currently living in Nebraska. My budget is 100 and under (preferably under). I'm going to be making my first tail out of this, and I want something that will hold up for a few years. Any recommendations?

Hi! I'd recommend the mahina fin, definitely. It's got that nice edge made specifically for mermaiding and it will absolutely last you. Urban Outfitters has them, and they do offer free shipping, so while it's at the top of your 100$ budget, it might be worth investing in. The only thing is they haven't restocked in a while, so they are limited to just the large ones in orange for now. (Though you can probably find one on Amazon, but that would be an extra 20 for shipping.) The other good choice is the Finis Wave, it's a bit small but there are a few ways to extend it and customize it. I haven't tried any myself, so I can't speak for that, but what I have seen is pretty cool. That one comes in at around 60 pre shipping on Finis's site, and 50-60 on amazon. But I did find one that qualified for free shipping! http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B...=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

Best of luck to you! Happy mermaiding!

Thank you! I have heard quite a few positive reviews on the Wave!

My pleasure! I have as well. Don't go the route of the rapid, because I have heard it breaks within its first two years of use. Something about the foot pocket cracking, or something like that. I have heard it too many times to discount, but the wave I've heard nothing but good about.

I also have a question I might as well bring up I was wondering if I'm gonna be swimming in the ocean what mono-fin should I use I was thinking of investing in the hydra since its translucent but I want to make sure it will be able to withstand a silicone mermaid tail and swimming in the ocean

I swim with my (modified) hydra in the ocean, but I have to be mindful of the conditions as it doesn't give a lot of push in rougher surf or strong currents. It works great when swimming off a calm beach or a boat.
I'm a strong swimmer and I've been using a monofin for a few years now and while I love my hydra I would only recommend it for ocean swimming if you're a string swimmer and the places you swim are calm.

I use my Leaderfins Sport monofin. It's a cheaper alternative to the Competitor and it has some serious kick to it. It's great for ocean swimming It's also an affordable monofin, about $100 I have used the finis Wave before, and I loved it but the foot pockets hurt my wide feet so I ended up selling it. Good luck with finding one!

I used my new mahina for the first time yesterday, and I would definitely recommend it over the hydra for ocean swimming. Better propulsion and easier to take off quickly if you get into trouble

I was curious about the Leaderfins Sport monofin since you mentioned it. I looked it up and in the options you choose the blade stiffness. Which stiffness did you choose? there is soft - medium - hard - extra hard

I have a finis Rapid and this is the latest of several times I have seen someone say in a topic that the Rapid is prone to breaking. I really hope mine doesn't break. Mine came with plastic feet in the foot pockets, and after each swim I put those back into the foot pockets to keep them shaped correctly. If I don't the monofin foot pockets start to get narrow.

I chose the medium stiffness It has a really nice powerful kick to it and it's easy to use When I had my Finis Wave monofin, I always put the plastic feet back in once I had used it, I had lots of fun with it, it's not the greatest for wide feet. The Leaderfins Sport monofin is the way to go!

I have a modified wave and it has yet to let me down. And I am not nice to it. All monofins will eventually break somehow.

In your experience when a monofin breaks, is it usually the ankle straps that get brittle, crack, and ultimately break? That has been my experience. Salt water and pool chlorine do the damage over time.

That's been my experience too. Sometimes a blade will break but it's usually the straps or foot pockets that wear out first.

I got my first Monofin, and I went with the Mahina "Water Woman" Merfin. It's great for ocean swimming, and it gives really good push. It's also well weighted so doesn't drag you down or pull you up too much which is awesome. Also super easy to take off. I got both my spotters (first time spotting) to practice a "drowning" scenario, that involved me going under the water and them pulling me up while pulling the merfin off so I could tread water. Both were able to do it first try, plus I could kick it off easily if I needed to as well. I highly recommend them, though it does look quite large on a person if you are quite little like me. I'm loving the Water Woman monofin. Eventually I'll be getting one of my own! I'm just not sure if Mahina will ship it to the USA because they say they're not available here yet.
