I don't think anyone would recommend a Foil for ocean swimming, but I could be wrong. If you intend to swim in the ocean you need a really powerful kick.

Honestly, my PERSONAL OPINION is get a competitor for that sort of use. No matter how skilled the mermaid is who puts on my foil tail, they find it harder to swim in the ocean. And always much much heavier with no kick. For a pool it's not the end of the world, you're usually lounging around with kids anyway. Competitors are built for ocean swimming. I can go against the current (not that I'm suggesting you do that) in it, and I don't worry about my safety when I use it as much as the other.
I have a foil in the silicone tail I made and it's very difficult to lift my fluke if I'm sitting down. If I'm on my stomach I can lift it over my head and slap the water, but its very floppy and a little difficult to move around. However, it really does look very realistic because its so floppy...it really reminds me of a fish.
If you have any intention of going in the ocean I would get a competitor. I honestly don't know if I would take my tail in the ocean unless it was very calm because the foil doesn't give me enough power. If you're going to have a 30lb tail you really need a strong monofin. I do a lot more kicking with my foil than i do with my wave monofin. I've never tried a competitor, but there is a huge difference between the foil and the wave so I can only imagine how much power the competitor would offer.
Ok I'm a bit confused: DO basic tails have neoprene in the fluke? And what's it about the 'new basic tail' line? Sorry for all the questions! I have been away for a while.
side note: I'm going for my last (mermaid) swim tomorrow! I'll be having a surgery this thursday and will not be able to swim for TWO WEEKS!! Oh the horror! :'(
I'm wondering the same thing! I'm saving up for one of her tails and I would really like a basic tail because I definitely don't need a performance tail. I would really like it if the fluke was all silicone like the performance tails.
Have a great swim! And good luck with your surgery, you'll be back in the water in no time![]()
I thought I just addressed that? lol the original line of basic tails did? But after that they didnt? But I think people got confused because she sold the first basic she ever made and she made a point of telling people they had neoprene on the fluke.
That's because I was managing the emails for a while for them, and I was the first Merbellas customer so I know the whole historySorry! Haha I hate making you repeat yourself but thank you so much for answering all our questions! Are you and Raven good friends? You seem to always have the scoop on what is going on.
WOW! Where'd you find that? It's SO detailed.
Ooops, I guess she hasn't posted that on her business FB yet! She'll probably post it once she's done with the entire top, this is just after she finished paining the silicone part I think! It's her Ursula top from the new "The Little Merbella" line that's she's been waiting for Halloween season to post![]()
Oooh, exciting. Can't wait to see the whole thing, very neat. <3 Do you know if she actually was going to have the Little Mermaid fluke available to the public? I thought I saw a post somewhere that it was going to be but I can't find it and I don't know. :\
I briefly caught up with Raven. She was still sick for about a week, like in bed sick. But she's coming round now and catching up. Several tails are just about finished, and Daniela's been all sorted- she was emailing the wrong email hence not hearing anything about her tailthere was also a monofin shortage that slowed things down.
For future reference folks, remember, the email that works is merbellastudios@gmail.com![]()
I emailed Raven and she said she advises against it, and that they try and urge people away from the foil because it makes the fluke very unmanageable on land. It's not that it's 'heavier' than the competitor, more just that you don't have control of the fluke out of the water, making it difficult to life the fluke over your head or do tail slaps and it can be harder to move around. She also said you won't be able to swim as fast or as easily as you would with a competitor. She also said that it's not recommended for open water swimming.
SO I probably won't end up getting a foilEven though I liked the look of the flowyness.
Also! On the basic tail/neoprene fluke note: I have a basic and I'm fairly sure that it does have neoprene in it. I can't say 100 percent, because I haven't cut it open to look and I didn't make it but it looks and feels like it does, compared to what I've seen in performance.
That octopus top looks so "octopussy" (hehe) I wouldn't dare to wear it
(just as I wouldn't want to wear a top looking like a genuine spider)
I'm sure more courageous mers will love it tho
That top is awesome! So much want. Wonder how much she's going to charge for them.
Wow stunning Ursula top! I can't wakt what more she's been up to!
Raina: Any news on the top orders?
*spazzes* Gaaaaahhh.... octotops! I'm going to see if I have enough money from my seasonal job to add one to my order. :3 I reeeeeeally hope I can! (Or just order it separately because I think my tail is almost done. 83 )
DAT TOP. Ursula is just the best, and any top based on her is awesome. So it's going to be out around Halloween? Doesn't that mean that the mers who order it will receive it after Halloween, though?
